Premier League 22/23 Thread

He'll be comparatively cheap, won't want to stay beyond the end of the season and loves the club - how good it is for his health is entirely debatable but I don't know who else you can get that wouldn't need much bedding in to the surroundings?

Agreed Edd.

Haha- what I mean is I don't want to finish second and them get a points deduction.

Genuine question, how would you feel about that?

I think, from memory it's Pool and Utd who stand to gain titles IF City are handed a pts deduction for every year they have apparently cheated. I'm not sure how I would feel about Pool being awarded retrospective titles. There'd be no joy in it. Albeit it would end the "slippy G" chants that got boring very quickly. It also opens a can of worms regarding prize money, missed sponsorship opportunities and the fact clubs were thus seeded lower in the CL and in theory got harder draws. I dunno how you resolve those issues. But on a purely literal level, I dunno how I would feel about Pool getting retrospective titles. I don't like going back and changing the league tables, but IF City are proven to have cheated I don't know how their title wins (and domestic cups) can be allowed to stand. They would be utterly tainted.
I think that's one aspect were the authorities are dammed either way. Retrospective re-awarding of titles is maybe the least worst outcome, but it's not a 'good' one.

I'm with you on the no joy bit, 100%. What's the point? I think I'd rather they lose their title and no title is awarded than win one by default, potentially some months or even years later. Interestingly in rugby there has been a comparable case with Saracens. They got a 70pt deduction and were relegated. They also refused to hand their trophys back (which is what took them from 35pts to 70)

Points deduction, relegation and banned from promotion for 3 years maybe - not sure how the championship sides would feel about that

Apparently you are now awarded a penalty if you're just close to being fouled, new one on me

@Michael Sith, the first time was in '92 when English sides (possibly except Liverpool) were allowed back in to European comps and European football had great novelty value, I can't remember pre the ban, and European football was also streets ahead of the English domestic game. Plus Utd were just at the start of their period of dominance so my utter hatred hadn't quite developed to what it is now.
The second one was against PSG who has literally dived, rolled about the ground, cheated, time wasted and called for a yellow card the second a Liverpool, player came within 5 yards of them. I do mean EVERY SINGLE ****ING TIME as well. It was THAT ridiculous that it got me over nearly 30yrs of hatred of Utd.
Other than that, I cheer for whoever Utd is playing EVERY SINGLE TIME. Even if it is City and them dropping points would suit Pool, I still cant cheer for Utd.

Nice to see Conte going quietly as we all knew he would. He probably has a very valid point, but **** me, he has basically just dared the Board to sack him.

Points deduction, relegation and banned from promotion for 3 years maybe - not sure how the championship sides would feel about that
That's not a bad idea. Obviously every single big name would be out of City like a shot. Pep, Haaland and KDB rocking up to Rotherham's ground (I don't even know what it's called) for a random Thursday night game, having played Stoke 48 hours previously……I don't think so.
Although with City's money they will just sell the big names, buy a "good" Championship side and then come straight up after 3 yrs and buy an entire new team.
Granted FFP would mean the reduced TV rights money had a knock on effect on their budget and sponsors would demand rebates or offer less. But as most of their "sponsors" seem to be owned by the same Gov that owns them……by strange coincidence…..that may not be an issue. Or would only be while they were in the championship, as soon as they get back to the PL suddenly the shirt sponsors goes from 10m a year to 500m and they can now afford to buy a new top level PL team AND stay inside the FFP rules. Plus the, going down and the big names all leaving would give them a huge inflow of funds, albeit players maybe sold at slightly reduced values. They would still be more than your average Championship club makes in transfers in a season (probably more like 10 seasons).
Whatever the value of their current squad is, even if they were all sold for only 40% of that, that figure is still more than enough to buy a "good" Championship side, pay their wages for 3 yrs and wait your time,

It is genuinely going to be very interesting to see how the FA/PL deal with it. My money is still on a fudge and a minor/pointless fine. But over a hundred alleged breaches would make that very hard, and it sounds like the other PL clubs are rightly gunning for them. The other member of the big six in particular.
The punishment should fit the crime, or else what's to stop someone else doing the same? Stripped of their titles, and probably domestic cups, and relegated sounds like a minimum to me. There will obviously be a fine too, albeit that is just so the FA/PL can afford to have some extra fancy new offices and some more secretaries etc

Yeah I don't want any of the 3 titles Man Utd finished second behind Man City in that time period. I don't believe in rewriting history, don't even take the titles away from them, what's the point?

I would punish them for the future, relegated to league 2 and transfer ban for 5 years. Let's see who breaks the rules after that.

Looks like Utd got a bit lucky there.

3 reds and a penalty in one go. Not seen the pen, heard it was a fair enuf pen tho. The double punishment, of the red for Willian, is a killer. Then Mitrovic goes full retard and Silva follows suit.
Only 1 winner from there.

And oooh look, City get the easiest possible draw in the semi's. AND it would have been at home had they not been scheduled for Wembley. What are the odds on that.
Fairs ****s, they are a great side and play fantastic football, but the draws they have had have been ridiculously generous and it has been on going for YEARS.

Do I sound like a broken record?

Yeah Man Utd got away with one today for sure, as we did in the last round against West Ham. We've been ridiculously lucky with the cup draws this season, but you have to make the most of that luck. Last season we went out to Middlesbrough in the 4th round at Old Trafford. I thought we were going out, then Fulham just had 90 seconds of madness and game over.

Usually hate this international break but it can't come quick enough for Utd. With Verane injured and Cassemiro suspended we really do look like we did last season. McTomany and Maquire must be finished at Man Utd.

Could be an all Manchester final, I can't remember meeting City in a major final? Imagin a Brighton v Sheffield Utd final, unlikely.

Not sure I can see SU beating City! Lol
Especially as SU have 2 players on loan from City who aren't allowed to play in the semi.

That Utd Boro game was funny, but the Boro goal should never have stood. One of their boys handles it, Utd stop, he passes to his mate who taps it in and VAR allow it cos the goal scorer didn't benefit, directly, from the hand ball. Ehhh even tho the handball was the only reason yer man could pass it to him. Good old VAR, wrong about pretty much everything, pretty much every time.

It will be interesting to see if Conte lasts the break! For what it's worth I agreed with most of what he said though, the Spurs players have thrown away so many points and opportunities recently due to bad decisions, laziness etc. Obviously all teams make mistakes, but you can't throw away 2 points against the bottom side and wash your hands of any responsibility

Apparently Conte is getting sacked, just a matter of it being confirmed.

I agree with Conte as well, not sure who can disagree with him. The owners of Spurs have got a Ferrari but refuse to put any petrol in it.

Pretty much every single Spuds fan I have seen on Twitter (insert your own comment about twitter) have agreed with Conte. It does sound like he is going to be fired, and I can see why, he did basically ask to be fired. But anyone who takes that job is either mad, desperate or just there for the money.

As for Uncle Woy, I see the logic, but **** me that's an underwhelming appointment. It beats fat Sam, Mark Hughes etc. but dear god.

Well that's Conte gone, suspected it would happen some time this break. I guess we'll end up with Ryan Mason again for the rest of the season. Maybe they should give him next season too if Arsenal are anything to go by!

EDIT - nope, apparently his assistant Stellini is in interim charge, with Mason as deputy. He did alright while Conte was off recovering in Italy, so could be worse.

Spurs have to go for Nagelsmann, he's available and one of the best up and coming coaches in Europe. I bet they don't go for him as he will want to much control for Levy.

Could there be anything more Spursy than going for the guy that just got sacked for being second place in a one horse race?
