Premier League Discussion Thread 2013/14

Yes I agree, there was some passion tonight, fans were awesome.

Rooney was a work horse again, Vidic was superb, Valencia and jones.

Really encouraging team performance, much better.

Mountain to climb with the away goal, but at least we are still in the mix.

I know UTD have had a **** season and look half the team they've been for the last 15 years, but is sad to see fans and pundits be happy that they came away with a draw at Old Trafford.

They reminded me of an England world cup side. Under pressure for 90 minutes and bereft of any decent ideas. Lumping it up front in desperation in the hope of picking up scraps. Not how UTD play or surely hope to play in future.

I took pride in watching Wigan go down last season as not for one second under Martinez did they stop playing football. (By that I mean passing it around and ****)

They went into every cup match thinking they could win it, and did. Not playing thinking, lets lose but not by many to save face.

Didn't see the game, but was surprised by the score. I heard Bayern dominated possession but that was a given.
I still expect them to win comfortably in the next leg, but fair play to Utd, that's a good result.

Yeah, that's what Spurs thought. Surely you can just buy players to replace the quality. :?

Yep there is the odd player like Suarez or Bale that are literally irreplaceable and can win a season on their own. There's a big difference between a good player and a once-in-a-lifetime player.

They can appeal, and they will.
I suspect the ban will suspended while they appeal. Sounds like dozens of other clubs have done what Barca have been accused of doing so I suspect either they will site precedent or the ban will be reduce to a literal slap on the wrist on appeal (and everyone goes back to where they were before).

Both were definitely pens.

Super disgusted with the referee and Andy Carroll (as someone who thought he never got a fair crack of the whip under Rodgers and supported him over the Chico Flores incident - now I hope he goes the way of Gazza). Still correct result in the end. If Suarez would've done what Carroll did then he'd be banned for 20 matches (not hyperbole!)

Quite shocked at the attitude from Suarez on here 'despicable', 'racist', etc. He's no angel (that's a given) and I wasn't impressed with his antics over the summer (although once burnt with Torres told me never to trust what a footballer says). He's knuckled down and done his it - people I go the game with have forgiven him and so have I. As for him being racist - that is a joke. Evra is a liar (he changes his story THREE TIMES and has the luxury of watching video footage before appearing before the 'independent panel' (it included one of Slur Alex Ferguson's oldest friends). As for the 'bite' it was no worse that Defoe's in 06/07 (I think)- he gets a yellow card - Suarez gets ten games! Still, Suarez is despicable - unlike the other nominees for PFA Player of the Year Robin Van Persie (alleged rapist and confirmed adulterer) and Gareth Bale (most yellow cards for diving - ergo a cheat).

The FA are ****ing hypocrites - the refs are mostly incompetent and they get no punishment, cf Marriner the other week. This Max Branning look-a-like from today won't get any punishment.

First one was definitely a penalty. I actually thought he was lucky to stay on after that. If he didn't handle it, Suarez was clean in on goal from about 5 yards away, if that's not denying a clear goal scoring opportunity I don't know what is. Not like any other defender was going to get round to cover.
I think a red would have been harsh, I don't like the penalty and red card double punishment, but them's the rules.

The second penalty was very soft. I'd say that's the definition of making up for an earlier mistake. Two wrongs making a right, in the refs eye.

How the ref didn't see Carrol's foul on the keeper I'll never know and what he and his linesman were talking about is baffling.

On another note, WTF is going on at Arsenal? I know they normally choke at this stage in the season, but even by their standards this is bad. That result makes Everton the clear favourites for fourth place now.

Stop laughing you spurs fans!

90% of those were not dives, it's not exactly a secret that referees had it in for him last season. If even 1 in 4 of his 'dives' had been given, Spurs would have been in the CL this season.

Credit to Liverpool but they certainly have had some mega luck this season, regardless of whether the penalties were legit (that rarely matters in this joke of a game with no video decisions) I can't think of many other teams that have been gifted 2 penalties in a single game this season. WHU were hard done by IMO, they played very well (a damn site better than Spurs or Arsenal did against Liverpool.)

Nothing's going on, Arsenal are just an average side. Their supporters stuck in 2003 are kidding themselves, they're no more real title contenders than any other mid-table team. I look forward to their fans relishing the Europa league after countless seasons of mocking Spurs for being in it

Edd.......did you actually watch the game? WH played "very well"? WTF!?

I mean, seriously WTF!?

They played a horrible horrible brand of brutal GBH football and even at that they barely had a chance in the second half, it was all Pool.
Carroll hit the bar aye, but so did Suarez..........twice!
Mingolet wasn't exactly over worked in the Pool goal. As for "gifted two penalties" the second one was soft, no arguments there, but **** me, the first one is as stone wall as they come! There's not even any case you can make for it being a gift.

Ohh and Tim Sherwood, take a bow son.............

That's right, your Goalkeeper is worth more than Gareth Bale and Christiano Ronaldo!

Divide that number by FIVE and you're in the right ball park! He's a ****ing keeper not jesus!

City and Chelsea are miles ahead of everyone else. If the other clubs don't catch up then it will be those two figthing for the title for the foreseeable future.

You then have a group of Arsenal and Liverpool. Arsenal are not the side they were and have papered over the huge cracks in the last 4 years. Arsenal have beaten Liverpool twice this season and I'm convinced they'll finish 4th - even if it's just because of the easier run in as Everton have some tough games. Liverpool are reliant on Suarez. Like Man U with RvP and spurs with Bale last year. If he goes in the Summer they're screwed. All season when Arsenal were top I knew it was a false position and that third was more likely. Liverpool's brilliant run have pushed them to fourth but Liverpool are also massively over achieving. Gerrard is not the player he was, and he was arguably the best player for at least 2 seasons when he was younger. 2 year contract? You kidding? He scores most penalties but Suarez has carried them this season.

Then there's a group with Tottenham, Everton and Man Utd. Spurs have not invested wisely. They've bought average players, or potentials who haven't shone. Everton are over achieving and could be picked apart in the summer. Man Utd are on the decline and may not recover for 5 years as they miss out on the CL. RvP at the end of his career. WR is not going to be fit enough to be playing for much longer. Team is aged and creaking.

I should have explained better - I am not saying West Ham should have won, what I mean is they played exactly the kind of football a mid-table team should against the top team - as you said yourself, tough, brutal football. That's what Spurs and Arsenal should have done against 'pool, there's nothing wrong with a point sometimes, but there's a lot wrong with conceding 5 goals!

And IMO refs should use a bit of discretion with penalties. As I said above we all know 50% of penalty decisions are pure guesswork anyway because they refuse to use video replays, so with that in mind I think it is very harsh for any ref to award two penalties to one team in a single game, that is pretty much game over.

Agree with you, but I'm guessing what he means is he doesn't want to sell him, not that he's actually worth that.

I completely agree Edd. I thought West ham had a gameplan and it worked very well indeed. One of the better defence performances v liverpool this season IMO
