Premier League Discussion Thread 2013/14

Apparently Negredo isn't 100% fit yet, so it was probably a safety first option given Aguero is injured. Mind you a goal down at home to a major titel rival.......

I agree on Dzeko looking pish, TF I just swapped him into my fantasy team for Aguero!
And as for Kolarov, he's as much a defender as me!

Glad to hear that Pete! Lol

Have only seen the goals, but sounds like Arsenal just didn't turn up.

As for Utd, they just find new ways to be shite! 81 crosses in the game, 13 successful! That's THIRTY more crosses than by ANY team in ANY game since OPTA started recording stats 14 years ago. Or in numerical terms, that's thirty crosses more than any team managed in any of the previous SEVENTEEN THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY games. 17220!!! That is a truly pathetic stat. Add to that yer boy from Fulham coming out and saying it was like playing in the Conference. David Moyes your incompetence simply gets more glaringly obvious with every passing week.

Ohh and before anyone uses to injuries excuse, games started by Rooney+RVP = 34, a massive three less than that started by Suarez and Sturridge, and the first two have started more games as a pair than the Liverpool strike force.
Now I know the Pool strikers have been on fire and form like that isn't normal, but given the much greater depth of Utd's squad (back up strikers of Wellbeck and Hernandez versus Aspas and ehhh .....) that stat shoots down any ability to say injuries have been responsible.

Giving David Moyes Juan Mata is like giving your 97 year old Grandad a smart phone!

Ohh and whoever loses on Wednesday night will be staring down the barrel of a massive media **** storm.

Cant help but think Forest missing a fantastic chance today to get to an FA Cup Semi at Wembley :(

Some great games there - got to think that an Arsenal - Man City final is favorite but if they both win and then meet in the semi then Sunderland have a great chance of reaching a second final (and getting relegated !)

How did Liverpool not win that?
They were the better side for the vast majority of the second half, but just couldn't score. Fair play to Fabianski he pulled off some great saves. The first penalty may have been soft (why did Podolski even try and tackle him, there was another defender right in front of him and he was going nowhere!?) but that second one was a stone wall as they come. Howard Webb stood 10 feet away looking right at it. Amazing, absolutely amazing.

Ohh and possibly Gerrard should have had a second yellow. Though I've seen quite a few refs give a player the benefit of the doubt in that situation. Also, Podolski avoided a yellow in the first half for a woefully late tackle on flannaghan (i think) so I'd say that's evened out. Though Gerrard would have walked, the Podolski incident came first, so I'm happy to call that even. Arsenal fans may well disagree.

Not overly disappointed that Pool are out. lets them concentrate on making the CL. Would much rather see them in it that lose to City in the final.

On that note, the quarter final draw is another underwhelming one. Arsenal v's Everton means the odds are we'll have the winner of that against City in the final. It also means, assuming arse/everton and City are kept apart, the semi's are going to be mere formalities.

Didn't see any of the City game but I thought Arsenal were unlucky last night. Had Ozil scored that penalty that would have blown the entire tie wide open. They had Bayern rattled at that stage. As soon as he missed it you could hear the atmosphere in the stadium die. Even after that the next 20-25 mins were fairly even, Arsenal probably had the better of the chances. Once Szezney was sent off that was it though. I have no complaints about the card or the penalty. I do think the double punishment is a tad harsh, but those are the rules and it was a penalty so...

Mind you I'd love to know what Monreal was thinking when he looked up and saw Robben running into the gap between him and his CB. Clearly it wasn't "ohhh I better mark him!"
Had Gibbs stayed on it may have been a different story.

At 1-0 down Arsenal still had a slim chance, at 2-0 that's game over.

City are out as well.

I wonder will this shut the "best league in the world" idiots up? Most entertaining and arguably the most competitive, does not equal best!

Afraid not in both games the english clubs were a man down and in both games when it was 11 v 11 the English club held their own and in aresnals case looked the better side so no not in my book

And is just me or does Barcas football flatter to decieve at times. Yes it is fantastic play but IMO Bayern looked much better last night

I didn't see the City game so I can't comment on it.

Barca can be a bit Arsenal-esque, in that they pass and pass and pass without actually creating much, but at the same time they do come up against teams who play four-five-one, with the four never moving from the box, three of the five being holding players who never moved from 5 yards outside the box and the other two midfielders barely moving much beyond that. From that point of view the passing without creating much may actually be a case of not seeing the forest for the trees. They are simply moving the opposition midfield 10 yards every time and over the course of 90 mins virtually no team can continue to close down all the angles therefore eventually they find a way through.
Teams set up shop to deny them space and to counter that Barca make teams work sideways to run them into the ground so they can't get into position to close the space down.

I still think on their day they are the best team I've seen. Possibly the Ajax side of the early 90's push them close, but my memory of them is probably clouded by 20 years of watching Liverpool murder the game!

I agree Arsenal looked good in patches against Bayern, but in the 10 minutes before Bayern scored and Szcezny got sent off Bayern had been camped just outside Arsenal's box. It's all "ifs" and "buts" really. "If" Gibbs had stayed on or "if" Monreal knew what a FB was meant to do, Bayern wouldn't have won that penalty and Szecny would have stayed on. "If" Ozil could kick a ball harder than a six year old girl..........
"But" they didnt.

Saying that, Barca and Bayern are two of the best three teams in Europe. No shame in losing to them. I still don't think the PL is the "best" league in the world though. Unless by "best" you mean "most entertaining", and if you do..........why not say "most entertaining"? lol

PS I know it's tabloid BS. But in all serious, can ANYONE tell me why the hell Tony Kroos would want to leave that Bayern team to sign for Utd?

Leave one of the best teams in the Europe/the world, who are strolling to another league title and possibly cup double, where you are surrounded by world class players and have one of Europe's brightest young managers, to go a team currently seventh in the EPL, with two world class players and a manager who looks horribly horribly out of his depth!?

Ok, Utd are better than their league position suggests, and yes they are a massive club globally. But my point on their lack of world class players and shite manager are still valid.

For the record I don't think Kroos is exactly underpaid by Bayern, he wants £250k a week, roughly what Rooney is on ATM, so for him to come to Utd they r looking at paying him at least that.
Ohh and my definition of "world class player" is one who any team in Europe would want in their match day squad. For Utd that is RVP and I've been generous and given you one from Rooney/Mata. Though Rooney is the definition of a form player. On his day unplayable, not his day, cart horse. As for Mata, if he was that good (ie world class) he'd have more caps for Spain and he wouldn't have spent years at Valencia with Barca and Real able to see what he can do every week.
Both very very good players, just not sure they are (what I call) "world class"

What a surprise, one shock result of the weekend and of course it has to be Spurs on the receiving end as usual  Still, Liverpool could easily have blown the six point lead they have in the last 2 games.

Not that much of a shock. It's the curse of the Europa league.
Here are our 9 league results directly following a Europa league game:

Norwich 1-0 LOSS
Liverpool 0-5 LOSS
Man Utd 2-2 DRAW
Newcastle 0-1 LOSS
Hull 1-0 WIN!
West Ham 0-3 LOSS
Cardiff 0-1 WIN
Arsenal 1-0 LOSS
Swansea 1-0 WIN

9 games. 3 wins. 1 draw and 5 of our 7 league defeats.

We are so far behind the top 4 now in terms of points and quality it's not even funny. I'm actually amazed we are as high as we are. We've become a very difficult and joyless team to watch. Pretty certain now we will finish behind Man Utd and we're not looking too hot for finishing above Everton tho they are also not looking too good at the moment.
Really want this season to end now. I'm done with it.

especially when you look at the 13 million you get from finishing 4th and measly 3 million prize money (although you do get money per round) for the europa league. a higher finish in the league is much more profitable, the europa league is better for teams with large squads or blooding youngsters.
