Premier League Discussion Thread Season 2014-15

Interesting weekend of results! Can't believe Spurs didn't beat ****ing Burnley, dull game. When they wonder why they're 9 points off the last CL spot in May I want them to remember West Brom, Burnley and QPR. Three easy games that any top-four team just has to win. As much as I enjoyed the Arsenal and Chelsea victories, it's pointless winning the big games if you lose to the minnows. Credit to Arsenal for their win at 'Pool but yet again every result went their way, must be nice having all the luck.

That's a wierd point of view Edd - Arsenal beat Liverpool surprisingly easily but Utd and Chelsea both won. Not sure any other results really mattered. Liverpools suspensions played a part, but luck didn't come into it.

Tottenham seem to put all their effort into the Arsenal game each year and then stop playing for the remainder of the season. Getting so it's a psychological issue but I don't think luck has much to do with it.

Burnley have also taken quite a few points off the big boys, so a draw is no real surprise, especially if Kane doesn't score.

Luck is rarely a factor in football. Play well, create loads of chances and if you're good enough you score. If not you don't. How many times have we said Messi, Ronaldo or Crouch been unlucky?

Well Palace are currently beating City, Need I say more!? And Southampton also lost a game they should have won against Everton, so Arsenal's four main rivals all lost/drew games they should (or could) have won. Sorry but luck absolutely is a factor in the league, it takes more than your own team performing well, you need other teams to lose too. I mean who would have put money on Arsenal catching up with Spurs when they were 12 points behind them with 5 games to go a couple of seasons ago. Apart from me, because Arsenal always manage it somehow

I thought that was a terrible week of results for the neutrals. The title race is over. Chelsea could play their youth team and pick up whatever it is they need in their last 8 games.
The CL spots are all decided. The order of the three sides may change, but those three will be in the pot when the draw is made (assuming whoever comes 4th gets through the qualifiers).

All that's left is to watch Liverpool, Spuds and Saints battle it out for the Europa League spot. Loser gets it!

I thought Pool were poor against Arsenal. Battered for 15 mins, then they started to play and just before half time they switched off and Arsenal ripped them a new one. What Moreno was doing for the first goal I'll never know. To start with when Sakho went out wide, Moreno was 10 yards to deep, then he sheppards yer man in towards the danger area. If he had lain down on the pitch he would have been more effective. The second was a quality free kick. Maybe Mingolet was a tad far to his right but I think that's knit picking. The third all comes from Lucas giving the ball away in midfield. Watch the build up, he gets closed down and fires it off to his left as if to say "here, you have it." Arsenal pick it up and 5 seconds later it's in the net.
Fair do's arsenal were much the better side and deserved it. Maybe if Markovic had passed to within 10 yards of Sterling it would have been different, but I doubt it.

Brendan has a busy summer ahead. Johnson seems to be away, his contract is up and I think he's on big money so they are happy to get shot. Lucas and Alen still don't fill me with confidence, maybe I'm being harsh on Lucas as he has been injured. Lambert hasn't worked out, £4 million, no big deal (in football terms). Ballotelli has been a complete disaster. Who will be daft enough to buy him? Lovern hasn't worked out. Toure is 33 and horribly unpredictable. Manquilo's loan hasn't worked. Again, no big deal. I think the jury is still out on Lallana, he's been good in flashes. Moreno seems to be good in the middle 50% of the pitch but has been caught out defensively too many times (City away, Utd at home, Arsenal away) and seems to get nose bleeds in the other team's box.
The Belgian kid Origi hadn't scored for a few months last I heard, so that cold be another flop, though I'll let him play a few games before I judge him.
Either way Brendan and the transfer committee need to do a better job this summer than they have done for a few years (Carroll, Adam, Downing etc). I'm struggling to name more than 3 or 4 signings Liverpool have made in the last 5 years that could be classed as "good". Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling. The latter seems to think he's worth super star wages when he has fewer goals and assists than Charlie Adam this season, but of course, it's all about trophies isn't it!

As for Spuds, I watched their game. Well, I watched Burnley play 11 blokes dressed as Tottenham. They didn't seem interested in ehhh doing anything. I think the phrase is "didn't turn up". I suspect Spuds need a bit of an overhaul and a clear out as badly as Pool. Too many **** "defenders", too many midfielders who are much of a muchness and ehh one striker. Rumours that Lloris to Real is 80% done. Vorm is a good keeper but he's a big step down.

Then there's City. If I was Shek Mansour, I'd be on the phone to Pelligrini asking him just WTF he is doing. How a club can spend that amount of money and still not look like a team is beyond me. What is it with them and defending titles? Also, they have a very old squad. Their habit of buying players just approaching their peak means they pay top price, top wages and have bog all resale value. Maybe that doesn't bother the billionaire owner, but it does mean they have to keep pumping money in and with FFP that isn't as easy as it was.

At this rate Utd will finish second and that is a bloody travesty, they are turd. They have played well twice this season (beating spuds and Pool in the last 3 weeks, and both of those sides are poor) and the rest of the time have looked like a bunch of strangers meeting for the first time and playing 1980's style hoofball. The PL really isn't what it was 6-8 years ago.

Now we have the excitement of watching six sides who aren't good enough to be in the league, battling it out to stay up by default for another season of less than a point a game footy.

Ps, can you tell my insomnia is back and I'm full of the joys of spring?

Yep completely agree, Chelsea and Arsenal must be laughing hard today. I wonder what the odds would have been on an accumulator on those results!

Premiership has always been overated, all about pace and power. Only produced 4 CL winners in 20 odd years.

Well I hope Spurs are now deliberately trying to dodge the Europa spot  ****ing abysmal last few games. Roll on next season, hopefully without the stupid Europa league to worry about.

I have to admit I genuinely feel sorry for Spurs supporters this season. Just think tho it could be worse, look at Villa, Everton and Newcastle. Not that they have spent the same but same sort of size club and history.

Well it's the same story every season, so we're used to it  not much fun being the under-achievers every season.

I wouldn't say Spurs underachieve Ed. I read somewhere that the top four reflects the top four highest combined player salaries - depressing really

This year Spurs and Southampton's earlier form was encouraging but neither have the squads for a sustained push. Spurs spending would make you think they should finish higher but apparently it's all down to salaries. Just need to back that up with some stats :)

That thought did cross my mind. If Pool can't make CL i'd rather they came 7th and missed out on the Europa League. Let's be fair, Brendan will pay lip service to taking it seriously, but will field a weaker side and not even be remotely disappointed when we get knocked out by Spartak Vladikavkaz

They need to sort out the Europa League, move matches back to Wednesday's and Tuesday's cut down the amount of games and call it something different like the UEFA Europen Cup or something. It's a sad state when no English clubs want to be in it.

What I mean by under achieve is that historically Spurs are one of the most successful teams up there with Liverpool, United and Arsenal in terms of trophies, yet haven't won anything of significance since 1991. They're no Portsmouth or Wigan that fluke the odd trophy, they have a history of winning things. And considering all the world-class players they've had over the last 20 years - Klinsmann, Ginola, Bale, and now Kane, it's ridiculous that they've barely been challenging for the top four, let alone the title. A club can't attract players like those unless they are highly regarded, so to me Spurs are the worst performing 'major' club in the league.

I'm hoping the new stadium will be a turning point, they'll never compete commercially with the likes of United or Arsenal in such a small stadium by today's standards.

The problem is everyone in Europe actually cares about it. It's only the PL clubs that don't give a ****. I don't know how you change that. Certainly the prize money on offer in PL and the prevailing attitude of "CL or bust" doesn't help.

Kane? Bit early on that one. He's been quality for 6 months, but I'd like to see him do it for a full year or two before I call him 'world class'. At the minute he could still be a flash in the pan, a pub quiz question answer in years to come.
Players like Dion Dublin, Kevin Phillips, and Marcus Stewart have all been in top two of PL scorers in a season and none of them are even close to world class. And Phillips got 30 in a season. Kane is on 18/19, the same as Dublin and Stewart. There's definite potential in Kane but it's too soon to say he's even close to world class.

Ps, I'm also ignoring the fact he's looked utter shite in the last two weeks and shafted my Fantasy team rightly. The bloke has been a one man forward line all season, he's allowed a few bad games, especially when his team mates are shite or on the beach.

Marcus Stewart was ace - that season was a-bloody-mazing - we came so close to Champs League in our first season

Oh TWTD (those were the days)
