Premier League Discussion Thread Season 2014-15

Yeah it's annoying as neither of those clubs would have given him the chance like we have and stuck by him at such a young age for a keeper, same thing happened with Ronaldo.

Thing is if we don't start competing amongst the top sides again soon, then I won't blame him for leaving.

The Di Maria cross and Rooney header was class, the rest of the game was pretty wank. Something needs to be done about these player tantrums, I think the referees just need to have a zero tolerance policy and book any kind of reaction as you even see players throwing hissy fits over throw ins these days! As discussed recently don't get me wrong officials are often wrong, but that doesn't excuse the reactions.

As a Spurs fan, my heart bleeds for you  on a serious note I don't think there's anything wrong with a few baron seasons, it keeps the league interesting and separates the real fans from the plastic fans (which lets face it 95% of Utd fans are.) I don't understand what entertainment would come from supporting a team that always win everything, isn't it a bit like playing a two-player computer game like Street Fighter against nobody and being chuffed at winning?

Couldn't agree more, as long as it is only a few baron years.

I might need some counselling otherwise.

Come on Chelsea! With FC Schalke nearly knocking out Real I don't want any drama tonight.

It's Sideshow Bob vs the Manimal Costa!

One easily dislikeable club built by some random benefactor's money, with a wanker for a main striker..............against Chelsea, oneof the most dislikeable clubs in world football.

Can I cheer for Al Qaeda? Lol.
Only joking, come on PSG (you're much less dislikeable than Chelsea)!

And they've done it! I wonder what the odds would have been after the sending off!?

And mine was Milton Keynes vs Man U

I used to hate on Arsenal when they were good then I realised I was just jealous...

Chelsea are just a thoroughly dislikeable club and they play god awful football. Much as I hate Utd they have, at least traditionally, played good footy. Ditto Real, apart from when Mourinho was in charge. Chelsea are just dull and attritional. Plus they seem to collect wankers.

Good riddance to them. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving club.

Plus they have achieved everything they have achieved because of outside investment from a billionaire. Not because of how the club has been run. Them and City make a nonsense of a once great Premier league.

No arguments here.

Though it looks like the PL is making a mockery of itself. All these years of overpaying mediocre tosh has finally caught up with it. Does anyone still think the PL is "the best" league in the world?

ps, "best" doesn't mean 'most entertaining' it means ehhh "best". As in it has the teams that are ehh "best" at football

Well actually no team is invincible, there have been plenty of upsets this season in all leagues. I think most people consider the PL the best league because it is so open, most seasons there's a battle for top spot and even the top 8 is completely open. And same goes for the bottom, always a tough battle. Unlike the SPL where either Celtic or Rangers have won it every year since the middle ages

Yes, in that respect it is the best and that is a massively relevant element. Imagine having to watch a league like the Spanish or German league every year where you have 2 of the best teams in the world and everyone else is there just for them to beat. Yawn.
In terms of quality, as i said, the Germans and the Spanish have the cream of the crop. But then 5 or 6 years ago it was us that had the best teams so it comes and goes as it always has done.
But below the top 2 or 3 in those leagues i don't think they're much of a match for the lower Premier league teams. You take the team that finishes 6th in either of those leagues and put them in the Premier league and they could be in a relegation battle. You could reference all the english teams failing in the Europa league but that would be a false stat. The english teams just don't take that cup as seriously as other countries. It just means so much more to the other teams in it than it does the Premier league teams. And i don't blame them.

The game last night was awful, all the worst aspects of footie on display.

I would agree much of the time Chelsea do play attritional / negative football but there's been some lovely stuff especially at the beginning of the season.

We'll just have make do with the League and League Cup this year, and the joy of Man U not getting fourth spot :D

I disagree. Look what Athletic Bilbao did to Utd a few years ago. Ok, that was only the Europa League, but from memory (happy to be corrected if I'm wrong) Utd had a pretty much full strength side out, this was back when they weren't shite, and Athletic played them off the park, twice.

Ok, that's just one game, but I do think the standard of La Liga is a lot higher than in the PL. I know FA about German football so I'm not even going to comment on it. Although, there is a lot of dross at the bottom of both the PL and La Liga. La Liga will change now that Real and Barca have agreed that the TV money is split evenly rather than them taking 40% each. Though the Spanish clubs do seem to take an even more flippant approach to finance and budgets than Leeds or Pompey.

I'd actually love to see a PL/La Liga direct play-off. Top plays top, second plays second etc the whole way down. My money would be in La Liga but it would be interesting to see how the games went.

I do agree, European dominance goes in waves, 6-7 years ago the PL was rampant, now it's La Liga and the Bundes League. Maybe in another 6-7 years Seria A will be back at the top.

My point was more the fact that the English media continually feed this drivel about the PL being the "best" in the world, when it palpably isn't. It's one of the best leagues and I would say the most entertaining, but it sure as **** isn't the best. Johnny Foreigner is actually quite good at football now.

PS, given how much money clubs are now earning from TV in the PL, it's an even bigger indictment of them. They have the biggest budgets they have ever had, yet they have just stunk out the CL and the Europa league. Too much money being spent on wages for mediocre players IMO.

Don't rule City out yet, have you looked at their fixtures?

The two times they have won the league they came from a similar position that their in now.

I know I'm counting my chickens. Our run-in is much worse in terms of playing more teams in the top four/five.

That last day fixture Man City vs Southampton could be tasty though if the Saints are still vying for a champions league spot.

Anyone hear about the Sunderland game? 4-0 down at half time, at home to a team who have scored four away goals all bloody season, and they start the second half with ten men!? Hard to tell fom the tv pictures but it looks like Poyet only works it out when the fans start singing "we've only got 10 men." After 3 minutes Poyet goes looking for their 11th man, Seb Larrson, a few minutes later he comes limping out and continues to limp onto the pitch as Poyet stands and watches.

After today I'll be amazed if he's still employed tomorrow morning. If I was the chairman I would have sacked him at FT.
