Premier League Discussion Thread 2013/14

I hope he turns out to be the real deal for England's sake but I can't believe a club like United would pay £30mil to £33mil (depending what source you read) on a player who has had one decent season in the premier league. It's a huge amount of money and can't recall a full back being purchased for this price in the premiership before. Big big gamble!

I don't think any club should be spending that amount on defenders.

Strikers win you games, defenders win you leagues.

Example, Liverpool FC 2013-14

Yeah, i really don't see what the position has to do with how much you spend on a player. :?

I see where he's coming from. Traditionally the big money has been reserved for the goal scorers and those attacking midfielders. Defenders and keepers have been trading at a distinct, ehh what's the opposite of "premium"?

For every Rio Ferdinand or Lillian Thuram, there are dozens of strikers and attacking midfielders who have gone for similar amounts.

Well, i think that's where a lot of teams have been going wrong. Tottenham shelled out 100 million on attacking players last season. Didn't feel the need to spend much on defenders cos they're just defenders. Look where that got us. Arguably one of the worst 4 defences in the league and thus a 6th place finish. I'd rather we had spent 30 million on Luke Shaw than 30million on Lamala.

Aye, though i think part of Spuds problem was they bought too many new attacking players. Had they stuck with 2 or 3 they might have got away with it, but the 27 they bought was excessive and always going to end in trouble.

Queue, Sanchez, Debauchy and Bernard at the Emirates......................maybe!

Sanchez is an excellent signing. I have been saying every transfer window for years United should sign him up! Not sure about the other two particulary Bernard

Sanchez is a great player, good signing for Arsenal. ALTHOUGH, they have paid big money for him and is another light weight, injury prone midfielder really what Arsenal need?
What odds on him being injured for 5 months of the season? His first hamstring tweak that gets the Arsenal standard "3 weeks" diagnosis, will be the last time we see him for months.

Not sure about Debauchy. He's French, so obviously Wenger is interested, but he's never really stood out in a pretty mediocre Newcastle team.

Agreed, Sanchez is a great signing but now Arsenal have a ridiculous amount of attacking midfielders. No striker. No holding midfielder and a lack of decent wing backs. Don't rate Debouchy at all. 6/10 player at best.

Not sure what to make of the Suarez sale.
75 million is good price, even allowing for his ban, but i just worry that Pool wont be able to replace him. Ok, someone like that is impossible to replace on a like for like basis, but i have an awful feeling Liverpool have sold their only world class asset and will spend/waste the money on a handful of mediocre replacements. Broadly similar to what Spurs did. Granted Spuds got a few decent players out of it and a few donkeys but i'm sure even the Spurs fans will admit their team was noticeably weaker last season (even allowing for a dodgy manager....and Tim sherwood). I have an awful feeling Liverpool are going the same route.

They've paid top dollar for Lallana and spending 10 million each on Emre Can, your boy from Benfica and that young Belgian Ogiligoli (or however you spell it) scares me. Rodgers transfer record is pretty poor. Sturridge and Coutinho have been successes but has mingolet really proved to be a step up on reina? Then we have asspass, borini and luis alberto. I'd say the jury is still out on Sakho. Moses and cisoko were nothing to lose loan signings.

The rumoured 20 million for dejan Lovren worries me too. A solid enough player, but 20 million! Really?
Ben Davies from Swansea has been rumoured as well. Solid and very promising player, 10million is probably fair enough. Is LB as pressing an area as CB? Are we just trying to get revenge on Spuds for all the times they have gazumped us in recent times?

Yeah, he's literally our only transfer target.  :? You can ****ing have him. #sucksbeingaspursfan

He's a good player. I was a little disappointed when i heard spuds were after him. 10 million is maybe a little more than you'd like but i guess given his age and nationality there is a premium to be paid.

You almost make it sound as if Spurs have other areas in their team that need urgent attention? Surely you don't think you need a striker or a CB, do you? Lol

 With Soldado and Harry Kane up front what have we got to fear?? I bet Man City are shitting themselves.

Is adebayor away?

He is actually world class when he is playing for a contract, after that he's a poor man's Jason lee!

For the moment he's still with us but he may be off from what i hear. Like you say, he blows way too hot and cold. He'll literally go 10-11 games without doing a thing. No team can afford that in their best striker (by a thousand miles!)
Lukaku would be ok but i think we need 2.

Yeah, i think you're right. Two new strikers, or actually getting Soldado to remember how to play football.

Ohh and a centre back wouldn't go amiss.

I think Tottenham need an overhaul in defence, both full backs and a decent centre back must be high priority plus a striker, also need some wide players. Be interesting to see what new manager does, wonder if he'll get much financial backing after the wasteful spending last summer.

No doubt Mr Levy will start trading 14minutes to midnight on the 31st August after we have lost one and drawn 2 of the first 4 games of the season... come home Raziak all is forgiven
