Just watched spiderman 2 and X-men, both great but x-men wins due to more grown up storyline (for a comic book). I love comics btw ;)

Pretty much the greatest movie ever made (along with others in different genres). Unparalleled on nearly every level. I fundamentally distrust people who don't see the brilliance of this movie. The 90s was such a strong decade for films, arguably the strongest and this is the pinnacle for me. A classic through and through.

the last good decade of films i agree

film makers these days just seem want to rehash/remake films and whats the other word..reboot. allthough the new batman series and new startek series have faired well in my estimation
 
I signed up to netflix after getting another free month trial.. first thing I watched was Cabin in the Woods.. got to say my expectations were low, and I thought "oh well.. at least there may be a bit of ****age before gory death".. but stick me with a large gladioli.. what a ****** up film that was. Recommended and I did not see that coming.

Might be some spoilers..

I saw this recently, and again expectations were low. It was decent up until the final 3rd when they clearly ran out of ideas. I was enjoying the duality or 'greyness' of Michael Keaton's character. But then they chickened out on him and it was predictable. The whole rebuild and family stuff was really well approached initially but it went nowhere and became moronic. They missed out on the chance to ape the goriness of Peter Weller being maimed (shot to ****). I wanted to see his limbs be blown clean off to leave a new legacy of Robocop gore. However the "whats left of me" scene was pretty disturbing.. They did manage to get my favourite movie line in there "I'd buy that for a dollar".. which I love.. and it was well delivered. I'd give it 5 / 10.. and two of those marks are for the insertion of the line.

add to that another Tarantino, non Tarantino movie which gets missed. True Romance. Its ridiculous but it just works. So many famous people in it performing little cameos (Pitt, Jackson, Kilmer) along with Walken, Tony Soprano, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman and of course big time Star Wars collector Christian Slater, and that bloke from that weird tv show which I cant remember Bronson Pinchot.. and it gives another oft repeated great movie line..

I do love Pulp Fiction... however regards a perfect period of film making, for me it was the mid 80s rather than 90s (SW trilogy aside (of course) 1984-1986 alone stand out (see below) as 3 great years. I imagine its a little romanticised by how old I was at the time but I look back on those years and their films with such pleasure:
Indiana Jones, The Karate Kid, Beverly Hills Cop, The Terminator, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Nightmare on Elm St., Dune, Footloose, Conan, Police Academy, Splash, 2010, The Breakfast Club, The Goonies, Back to The Future, Weird Science, Mad Max, Lampoons European Vacation, Aliens, Ferris Bueller's day off, Top Gun, Platoon, Stand By Me, The Fly...
.. and before I go on a touch too far with the list (someone will no doubt say I have already.. err... Conan, Splash.. really??? :? ); they might not be cinematic genius, but entertainment wise and diversity... wow!
Best of all, I watch many of them now with my kids and like SW, they still work their magic :-)
 
Just been to see edge of tomorrow. Pretty good. Few holes in the plot, but then given the plot that's inevitable. Well worth a watch though.

Agreed. I really enjoyed tho for what it was. Nice idea well executed. The 3D was awful but that's the case 4 times out of 5 with 3D. Not sure how they get away with it but there you go.
 
Managed to get to the flicks to see X-Men the other day, loved it, nice tone and a few nods for the fans and great to see both casts mixed in, maybe a little sentimental in places but very enjoyable.

Started in on a few of the disks I have knocking around:

Parkland - dull and unimaginative and ultimately offers very little knew to the JFK story. The acting is solid and the tone and direction spot on for the movie, but with so little to work with you just don't care about these fringe players so the film fails to engage and draw you in.

Enders Game - late to the party with this one and really wasn't worth the wait. The concepts here are so tough to swallow I am surprised anyone bothered, in order to make the film watchable so much is dumbed down and left out it becomes a bitty, disjointed and unemotional peice.

Ancorman 2 - nuff said. It's funny.

Jack Ryan - I so wanted to like this one, I wanted to love it, but all I can manage is mild toleration, great cast all exceptionally capable, but given so little to do or work with. The action is mooted, the analytics dry and the entire thing just feels lacklustre.

Son of Batman - again, such high expectations for this and thus only disapointed. The story is rushed and relies on fanboy knowledge to fill in the gaps, the voices don't really work but are passable, but mostly the direction style matched with the substandard animation is what does it for me, after the high of the Dark Knight Returns parts 1 and 2 last year this is a real step backwards.

So much more to watch over the next few weeks :), hopefully more positives to report that this run of poor showings.

I saw it in 2D. 3D is just a gimmick.
 
I bought big trouble in little china and lifeforce on bluray a while ago, they both look great, love Kurt Russel, and john carpenters films are cool, loaded with extras to,Lifeforce is a cool 80's horror, very cheesy and trouble is just a riot,, arrow video who produce these allways go that extra mile to put loads of interesting stuff on the discs.
Also watched the grey with liam neeson, it was ok but not a must see movie, glad i didn't pay a lot for it

lifeforce underated film imo

watched congo again recently (1995) a bit of fun. i remember watching this in ludlow assembly rooms when it came out :lol: 5/10
 
First time to the cinema for me in 2014.
Finally got to watch Edge of Tomorrow. Thoroughly entertaining film, really well done with a great cast.
As Weas said "Worth a watch"

Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus

He found it at a car boot sale; yes I still live in hope of finding something other than a beater priced at £4-5 or higher, just because its SW!
Unsurprisingly a truly terrible film, that starred 80's pop sensation Debbie Gibson of all people. I won't spoil it as I'm sure you will all be rushing to your nearest DVD bargain bin to find it, but it features some, shall we say, interesting acting, spectacularly bad SFX and of course a Mahoosive Shark and Octopus... actually what more could I ask for??? I'll stop moaning... :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
saw Xmen the thingy thingmy

Not bad. Fan of all things like that. Jennifer Lawrence is good, but the whole film felt a bit low key in storyline. Worth catching if you've seen the other Marvelverse films.
 
Watched mrs browns boys d.movie .very funny the blind ninjas had me in tears.hopefully going to watch transformers age of extinsion next week
 
Looks good on the trailer.

Saw The Great Gatsby last week on DVD. Great film with the dude out of Spiderman and Leonardo Decaprio. well worth watching 8)
