My local cinema shows Globe shows about 3 times a year. It was stunning, even The Telegraph gave it a 5 star revue which is virtually unheard of.

I find that really odd. Surely the only way to enjoy a performance at the globe is at the globe. Its a great place..

Here's what I've been watching lately:

In the cinema:

*Inbetweeners 2. Very funny. If you enjoyed the TV series this carries on the fun
*Guardians of the Galaxy. Great fun, 2nd best Mavel movie after Avengers
*Planet of the Apes: very good movie. Interested to see the direction the third one will take.
*Transformer: I'd given up on this crap after the 2nd one. Friends wanted to see it, never again will I watch a Michael bay transformers movie.
*xmen days of future past: Rocked, loved it
*Godzilla: Not for everyone, but as a fan if the Big G I dug it.

At home

*Wolf of Wall Street: got the blu ray of this. Saw if twice in the cinema. My favourite movie of the year.
*Hobbit 2: I walked out of the cinema back in December half way through. It's a long movie and I just wasn't in the right frame if mind for it. Caught it on Netflix this week. It's okay, but it's very bloated. Love Smaug though.
*Machete Kills: again on Netflix, glad I didn't pay cause it's *****.

i very rarely go to the cinema as its so overpriced and i normally end up with idiots sat next to me talking the whole way through so im happy just to watch at home now, anyway ive recently watched....

wolf of wall street: really enjoyed it, lots of drugs and sex, 3 hours long though 9/10

american hustle: an ok film, was expecting lots of hustles but the whole film is just one big one 6/10

her: pile of crap, dont waste your time, jaoquin phoenix falls in love with a computer 3/10

thief (1981) michael mann who did miami vice, its no "heat" bit like a crap scarface with james caan 5/10

has anyone seen zodiac? i started watching it the other night but was too tired, it looked good from what i saw?

Having indulged so heavily in Marvel's cinematic offerings over the last year or two I just wanted to remind myself of the other end of the spectrum and re watched Nolan's batman trilogy (oddly in reverse order for some reason), but wow, dark heavy and absorbing to the core I had forgotten just how great they are. I am sure everyone has watched these but no harm in revisiting a modern classic.

Yeah, if only those awful Marvel movies were more like Nolan's Batman series. So rare that a "super hero" film has such emphasis on story, pacing and genuine tension.

I haven't seem Guardians of the Galaxy but the Avengers film and the Captain America films have not particularly impressed me. Usual predictable, formulaic, CGI heavy nonsense. Spiderman ditto (all attempts) the last Spiderman was easily one of the worst Super-hero films ever made. Fantastic 4; same issues. Cheesy, formulaic, predictable. Daredevil; awful. The first Iron Man was ok but the 2 follow ups were bloody awful. Jon Favrau admitted that 1 week before shooting he didn't have a script. :roll: )
Thor did nothing for me - Again, lots of razzle dazzle but nothing of any substance to really make me care or take note. All the Hulk films, weirdly, each one better than the last but non particularly good.
The early X-Man films i thought were great but they got progressively worse and the last effort (X-Men: First Class) was crap. Haven't seen the new one yet but my breath is not held.
Wolverine; a contender for worst super-hero film of all time. I seem to remember seeing 2 Wolverine films, unbelievably. They were both ****.

Maybe i expect too much but these films are made with franchise and merchandise in mind and that's why they will always fail. When you watch the Batman films it's even more annoying when you think wheat could be done with these characters given some talented writers and a decent director and NO studio interference.

Ha, yeah, I think maybe you are setting the bar a bit heigh. Batman is a unique beast and despite being a much loved character for all ages (my 3 year old loves batman) isn't really a character or story for under 10's and lends itself the the grown up films Nolan made.

The Marvel offerings you mention don't, and to be honest if you take the levity and silliness out of the marvel world I think you loose something. I do agree not all of their films are good, Iron. Man 2 and both Thor's didn't really hit the mark.

The source material for all the marvel work since the Civil War story back in 2006 has been laced with humor and a lighter touch. Whereas over at DC the stories have been getting darker and darker, the entire Bat universe since the Son of Batman story in 2005 has been nothing short of disturbing and that then branches out in to all their characters.

I like that each studio has embraced its own tone, I just wish the guys at Warner could get their act together and maintain the standard set by Nolan as well as working the bigger picture the way Marvel has. Love or hate Marvel's films it is great to see a studio place such faith in sprawling interconnected set of stories within stories, perfect for the super hero world.

I susspect Guardians may not be your thing given your views on what has come before, but it is a lot of fun if you give it a chance, and you will be singing half the soundtrack for weeks

Just watched a film called 'Locke' tonight. A superb movie, well written and brilliantly acted by Tom Hardy. A complete one man vehicle - pardon the pun (you'll see) - movie in which Hardy excels in the lead, and only, roll. Can definitely see him getting an oscar nod come february. :wink:
If you think you can handle a film where, almost literally, nothing happens and it relies entirely on script and one man's acting ability then give this a shot.

Long haul plane journeys gave the opportunity to catch-up on some of the blockbusters and missed cinema releases of last year:

Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Grand Budapest Hotel
Monuments Men

Few things to say about them... Gravity; can't believe I hadn't seen it till last week, simply brilliant and despite not believing the hype at the time, can totally understand why everyone made such a fuss. Walter Mitty; looked somewhere between dreadful and poor from the trailers but thought I'd take the risk and I'm glad I did, really enjoyable, slightly daft film but well worth watch IMO. Grand Budapest; possibly an acquired taste, but if you liked Life Aquatic or Royal Tennabaums, then this won't disappoint - great piece of film making. Monuments Men; fantastic cast, great acting from them too... covering a 'true' story with a really interesting take on the genre of WW2 films.

Just back from a sunday morning cinema visit with my sons (they're down with me for the summer holidays ). We went watching 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and must admit I thoroughly enjoyed it, not as good as the hype makes out but still a very enjoyable film. Though I must admit I could sit watching paint dry just as long as I've got my kids beside me (god I miss them sooooooo much )

Saw Divergent the other night. Thought it was gonna just be some terrible teen Hunger Games knock-off type of thing. Was pleasantly surprised, and think I prefer it to the Hunger Games. Plot holes etc, yes, but still enjoyed it and will watch the sequels.

Inbetweeners 2... I needed a good laugh today and I got one. Overall the story isn't quite as strong as the first, but there are some top draw laughs, out loud, pant wettingly funny laughs and somehow it is still endearing.

Blue Brothers

Forgot how good this was and how great the tunes are. Favourite scene - Ray's music shop 'Shake a Tail Feather' There are so many fantastic and ludicrous scenes, it's a laugh riot.

Favourite quote - 'they broke my watch!'. It's a running joke throughout the film. There will be an outrageous car pile up (one of many) and a police officer will complain 'they broke my watch!'.

Carrie Fisher - the psychotic ex of Jake Blues. Even more stunningly gorgeous than in Star Wars. She plays a great part.

I read the book and then watched the film right after late last year. It stays very true to the book. Does a really good job of capturing the feel and atmosphere of the book. Having said that, the film just doesn't work as well as the book but it's a decent watch.
