films that traumatized you as a kid.

Scarey one for me was The Fog, the original of course out in 1980. There was another but can't remember what it was called, about a doll that had very sharp pointy teeth that killed people was out long before Chucky came along. Used to check under my bed for years after I watched it

While we are on the topic of horror movies I decided to check the web for the top horror movies. I don't mind a good horror now and again so I thought what the hell. The movie Cannibal Holocaust kept poping up. So I took the plunge to see for myself.
Well **** me sideways I wasn't prepared for that
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the only thing comes remotely close and its mild compared to that.
I have a strong stomach but that's the worst I have ever seen on TV.
After watching it I googled it abit more to find out what the **** that was about. Apparently the guy who filmed it was arrested and almost charged with murder because they thought he killed someone on camera.
I would advise anyone going to watch that don't let the wife or children see it until you judge for yourselves .

Haven't seen that one. TCM is one of few very disturbing horrors I have seen though. But do you not find that older films are more disturbing due to a combination of the way they were shot/lighting/ make-up etc? TCM and the original Evil Dead are classic examples of that IMO.

Something I saw more recently, or at least bits of it, was Human Centipede. I just couldn't watch it all. I was having a Facebook discussion with friends about that one and the concensus seemed to be it was just a terrible film, but the subject matter and the concept freaked me out. Whoever thought that up should have just kept it locked up inside their head - people sown together arse to head in a chain? What the F'ing ****!

As a kid I rented a lot of horrors from the video shop. For some reason my dad had an understanding with the guy at the store and they let me rent what I wanted. Loved the Friday the 13th movies, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraisers and all that stuff. I don't really consider them to be scary films though.

The most horrendous scene I can think of in any 'horror' has got to be the ankle smashing in Misery. That psycological type scenario is more my bag these days. Not the slasher, jumping out, scare fest ****.

I am a member of a film club. One of the member's chose to screen the 'Serbian Film'. I didn't turn up, thank goodness :)

That centipede thing also sounds really ****ed up. Yes Cannibal Holocaust is the same its more disturbing than scary. I really think the guy who thought about filming this has some sort of deep rooted issues he needs help with.
It's based deep in the Amazon and from what I read it's real tribes. This team go searching for missing journalists whom went missing. They find this tape and other **** from them.
Anyway they find some still alive and the tape also tells a story when watched. Then they come across the tribe having a meal with one guy tied to a tree who's the main course! These kind of guys don't worry how well you like you meat done! Well I was only thinking if I wanted a good meal I'd go for the leg. These Cannibals go for a part well put it this way "remember the crying game" if you know what I mean. And at this stage he is still alert to what is happening. This is before he finally bleeds out during the rest of the meal. The search party are so terrified they just sit and watch :? plus film it for research.
Then the women are also still living I don't even want to go into that what happens them.

Any of this lot (although the guy I know rapping does help me not to have nightmares any more) -

Sound like this has moved on to 'films that traumatized you as an adult'

Not a film, but I've got graphic memories of hiding behind Grandads sofa when Zelda from 'Terrahawks' came on.

Anyone metion the Hitcher or what was the name of that movie where the lorry kept chasing the guy in the car?

Duel ?? with Dennis Weaver

Can't think of anything that really terrified me as a child, but as with a few here, Arachnophobia didn't help with my fear of spiders, and I was 23 when that come out !!

Yes I just checked Duel that's the one :) there was always something mysterious about that lorry.
I think when you never got to see the driver it added that extra edge to it.

Duel was great. I really remember loving that back in the day

So this cannibal holocaust thing - to be avoided?

A good way to find out if its worth a watch. Get your mate to watch it first. You'll know by his reaction towards you the next night he meets you in the pub.

The first film that I remember that freaked me out was called Horror Express. I think it was a Hammer production. Had Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in it. Those frikking red eyes still sh*t me up :)

Also talking about Hammer productions it would have to be Hammer House of Horrors, the TV series. I only watched 2 episodes as a kid and that was enough - The house that dripped blood and Charlie Boy.

Some interesting choices here. My parents were very strict and I didn't see any horror films on television or video. Unlucky me!

One film that really scared me as a child was "The Legend of Boggy Creek." It was shown on television when I was around ten or eleven years old and scared the hell out of me. If you don't know it, it's a mock documentary film about a bigfoot creature attacking people in a small American town. It was filmed with amateur actors and to me it seemed like a genuine documentary.

I was left believing that those things were really out there. Only years later did I learn that the film was entirely fictional. I did a quick google search and although it seems that the film was rated 18 at one time, it is now completely unrated. I wouldn't let any children watch it – that's for sure!

My parents got a video recorder in 1981 and they always used to rent horrors, they never really affected me as a kid. The first one I remember watching was a zombie film called Children shouldn't play with dead things. Downloaded it recently and it's really bad (and not in a scary way!).

i remember being creeped out by a programme called Armchair Thriller. I hated the opening credits let alone the actual show!

Also I hated the theme to Picture Box, especially the extended version. It's the sort of song I'd expect playing whilst a clown operates on me whilst I'm still conscious. Or as described on Youtube, "Sounds like a paedophiiles ice cream van"

Ha ha the precession of teacher pushing the tv on a trolley an hour before lunch time dim the lights and its picture box time, always remember one where kids were paddling down a stream,........ music and then "hello are you ready for a story" :D

Loved that film, but it made me scared of going in woods! Can't remember too much apart from a cat that was literally scared to death. Was the creature called the Fouke or something along those lines?

The Boy From Space and Dark Towers - what they showed to most primary kids in the 80s got me. You'd be arrested if you did that now.

Interesting fact, Peter Mayhew played the White Knight in Dark Towers

Great that someone else remembers the film. Thanks for posting. I don't remember what the creature was called. I just remember it being very realistic – a little too much!

The other thing I remember being scared by was the black suited and masked Federation Troopers from Blake's Seven. Unlike Imperial Stormtroopers who would usually miss, these baddies were just down right deadly and unmerciful. As an eight year old, I was quite traumatised by them. Watching the show now, it's easy to see how tame it is.

**Snip-edit** I may have been too old to have been shown The Boy From Space and Dark Towers at school. I'll have to look them up.

Dark Towers was scary but 'The Thin Man' from Boy from Space terrified me as a kid. Photos and the formation of a trauma-related support group can be found here:
