films that traumatized you as a kid.

If anyone can help me identify this film I would appreciate it.

Must have been 5 years old and my dad had a video on in the pub. For whatever reason he never stopped me watching it. But i remember zombies in a hospital or similar facility, possibly on the moon. It gave me nightmares and I've never forgotten it. Just don't know what it was. This would have been circa 1981.

Not sure about that one can anyone remember these plants which captured you. I am not sure if it was a programme or movie. The guy in it had a black beard or moustache in it I think. They wer like big sunflowers or something. I can't find it on YouTube anytime I search. It was on the same year or time i think that Stig of the dump and Worzel Gummidge were the big screen pullers for me.

You might be talking about Triffids? The day of the Triffids? Rings a bell, maneating plants.

Funnily enough it wasn't actual films that freaked me out as a nipper but TV programmes especially the 'Armchair Thriller' series in the 70's  I look back at certain episodes know on YouTube and the acting was shite but bitd it was very frightening, especially the background music,it all added to the atmosphere of something bad was about to happen

Tales of the Unexpected was quite weird. There was one where a little girl ended up abducted by some peados. I would say that one was the creepiest.

Some shows were just creepy because they were shot in the 70s. Good lighting, costume, make-up or fashion sense did not appear to be order of the day.

...In the Company of Wolves. That was shitnin!

Those public information films were pretty horrifying. I remember the dark water one and the kid going to retrieve his football from the electricity station. Yikes!

I remember the public information films well :D

The one where there is grim reaper near a lake just waiting for children to go swimming in there (if memory serves me right)....there were a couple of DVD's released a few years back that had majority of the short films on them going from the 60's through to the 90's both DVD's have well over 100 short films on them....and yes I have these DVD's (sad I no   ) still it brings back memories 8) .....

Do you remember the Rolf Harris one with him in the swimming pool with kids 'kids love water' thinking about that it know that is scary know :?

Do they still show kids films about flying kites near pylons and that sort of thing. That's the one that stuck with me. I will never fly a kite near a pylon! Nor will I I ever pick up a freshly spent sparkler!

I guess kids these days fly kites wherever the **** they choose

Don't forget driving a run away tractor or getting squashed by big iron gates when playing at you local farm, like you did in the 70's , although I always remember the sub station football electrocution , did used to climb into them to get my ball, think the lure of all the other balls over there was to much and over road common sense, but I survived :) on films saw Texas chainsaw massacre as I had a telly in my room from about 12, tamer tv version but still quite shocking and always liked dance of the vampires, great atmosphere in that film :)

Another one...

The kids TV show 'The Enchanted Castle'' featured a scene where a group of kids put on a play to an audience of dummies. At the end of the play the dummies start clapping and get out of their seats.   **** me up big time!!

This! Totally traumatised by this as I was only little. They were called Ugly Wugglies IIRC.

Also have a vague recollection of an episode of Dramarama, where a girl had a split personality and basically went bonkers. Really heavy stuff!

Two films...
- A film called HOUSE, i think it was the first 'horror' film I saw, I saw it again recently and its not at all scary. I think as a young kid it was more about the anticipation of fear.
- The Tigress.. I was hunting around for a video to watch and came across a film called the Tigress. Not sure I should have found it or been watching it  All i remember is a semi clad 'lady' licking and sucking a banana in the opening credits and my Dad bursting into the room and turning the TV off very quickly in quite a fluster... odd behavior for a film about liking fruit I always thought!

I think your dad felt more traumatised after that experience than you

Great thread, lots of good choices, I remember the jaws head in the boat scene, that really got me as a kid, then it was Salems lot the vampire flick, the scene when the brother is tapping on the window to let him in, freaky stuff gave me nightmares for ages
Got me into sculpting and mask making so it all turned out ok in the end

I know I'm not alone with a couple of these but the ones that are permanently etched into my conscious are:

Jaws, still get the theme music in the back of my head when I go in the water, even large swimming pools.
Watership Down, General Woundwort, Bright Eyes. I can't watch it to this day.
The Neverending Story, Artax in the swamp.

The worst has to be Mr Noseybonk though, I shall let Charlie Brooker explain the finer points:

It's strange, I've heard so many people say they were freaked out by Noseybonk but I just found him hilarious.
