Anyone else feel a bit lost with vintage?

I was lucky and still had my childhood collection and was lucky enough to pick up some bits in the 90's and have enough to remind me of my childhood on display, I have all the usual ships & figs . As people have said on here sometimes I just like to look at what I have and remember playing with them when I was 7 to 13, what am I saying I still play with them now , can't beat holding a tie fighter at arms length and spinning round :D always wanted the hard to find bits like sonic sancrawlers and paly death star playset, land of jawa's etc but know now I could never justify the price of all the fantasy items I see . I think sometimes seeing all the rare items I never managed to get keeps my interest as I think sometimes wanting is better than having. :D

I had a dream to own all the figures complete and mint. But now when i see they way the prices keep going up i am resigned to the fact it could cost to much for filling my dream. I see some forsale sometimes with repro weapons on e-bay that I need that I could afford. But I would rather not have them because I will know they aren't complete in my eyes.
I still do the lotto every week so there's still a chance!

I admit I did feel a bit lost with collecting. After been ****ed over and lied to by a 'respected aussie collector' I lost the drive for a while but now couldn't be happier. I do see a lot of the asking prices being a turn off but I still manage to buy what I want for a good price, it just means I need to be a bit more patient than before

I am in the place where I only really want a couple of items ! So will just enjoy looking at my collection .

I am sure when the hype drops , prices will !

Same here. I've got a small but punchy collection, and there's only about 5 more MOCs I want really badly. Just sitting back and waiting for the right condition and deal to come along.

As I have said before I kept my childhood figures right up to 2009, when money issues saw me having to sell my beloved figures to someone in Spain ( I think I know who ! ) via eBay.

I therefore, when back in the black, started collecting all over again. About 3/4 of the way through my loose collecting I was feeling jacked off with eBay and considering giving up, repro weapons, things not arriving, mental prices, being beaten by pennies at the last second on eBay....

But then I found this forum, though a message from a seller on eBay who uses this forum, and I've never looked back !

People here have the same passions, there is honesty, there is a sense of fairness and you can have a nice deal. I'd have hardly any ( if any ) MOC's if it were not for here, I'd never have got a Mint Yak at a fraction over £90 on eBay, never got to share memories, stories or get advice if it were not for here !

In short, this place restored my faith and I love my hobby -B that's down to you guys ( and girls if there are some :) )

I'm happy happy , I have patience and I only buy what I like and is a good price , example I'm not stupid enough to spend $2500 for an afa clear bubble rotj emperor or something stupid like that , everything I have bought I could sell and make a profit but I have zero plans in selling because I'm in it to enjoy the product and memories , not in it for CASH.

... the simple truth is that when something is very expensive then buying it becomes a more serious proposition. And this is a hobby and a hobby is meant to be fun. So you have this dichotomy between a 'serious' purchase and a 'fun' hobby that can make you feel a bit lost!

I 100% agree with this.

This is supposed (for me) to be an escape from the hassles of work and the daily grind - but as prices have risen, deals have become harder to do as well - partly because of the cash now involved (2 weeks in the Bahamas vs 2 12 Backs?) but partly because some sellers are afraid of selling too low, and want 'tomorrow's prices today'. I've lost count of the number of deals in the past few months which have just been dropped by the seller - big sums of money too - which makes it really hard to keep interested in actively collecting.

I honestly think that buying my last house was less stress and hassle than the last 2 (aborted) deals I've had going on for some rarer MOCs. Now that's mental.

When it stops becoming an escape and starts becoming a hassle, you have to ask whether it's worth it.

Max, you say your tired of losing out on deals, well my advice to you mate is try offering a decent price for items instead of trying to get real bargains. The reason you lost out on some great Palitoys from me is you told me your offer was good and you werent low balling me, two weeks later your offer trebled........hmmm..... :D then on my way to the other side of the world for my vacation, the 5 figures which were offered to you were sold to a great buyer of mine for nearly 10 times what your original offer was.....! Come on mate its a lesson learnt.. :D so no hard feelings mate but come play the game....Lol

If your aim as a dealer is to get absolute top dollar for your items (perhaps even significantly more than they are really "worth") then what exactly is a fair offer in your eyes? I don't know Max personally but I find it hard to believe he would offer you 10x less than an item was worth? He's always been a decent respectable collector to my knowledge.

If you eventually sold them to such a valued customer why did you not just offer them to him first? Or better yet, list them for sale on a website or forum for the prices YOU wanted. IMO anyone that invites "offers" is usually fishing for a price they can't refuse which would probably be much more than most genuine collectors are prepared to pay anyways.

Next time the checkout operator asks you "Would you like a bag?", Just refuse, Save yourself that 5p charge, Carry all your shopping awkwardly pinned against your chest, with your chin as 'topple support' and in no time at all you'll have saved enough money in needless areas of your life to justify going the extra mile on the next Star wars purchase

Unfortunately this is a path many of us go down, I myself have been down it numerous times lost the bug sold up and after a break got back into it.

The problem now is if you do sell up and spend the money on other things and then decide to get back back into the hobby the prices will really put you off with even loose figures selling for stupid money... I think if I loose the bug again and sell up that will be my final time....

If my memory serves correct it was 5 of the first 12 on 30 back cards

5 of the 1st 12 on a 30????

One thing is for certain, they are worth top £!!!

Dealers vs Collectors FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!

Seriously though, there would also be a huge variance in what people might value these very rare items at. You only have to look at some of the wide ranges for common items in the Valuation threads to see that people can't even agree on those. People value in different ways, as a buyer, as a seller, as a dealer selling, as a dealer buying (lol) ...

I wouldn't expect valuations to be that close when there's no evidence of value. It's really who wants them more and who had more cash at the time.

I also hate "make me an offer" and sometimes just walk away, although mainly when I'm not sure what something is worth.
