I watched the re-run of the 1990 World Cup semi-final between England and Germany on iPlayer yesterday, and I really enjoyed seeing it again. It's one of the earliest matches I can remember watching on TV, I would have been 8 at the time. So it got me thinking, what are your top 5 most memorable football matches from any year or competition? Here's mine:

1) England vs Germany, World Cup 1990
An obvious one but despite being young I remember the hype around this game, and the agony when we lost. It was England's greatest football achievement for 50 odd years until we reached the semi final again in 2018.

2) England vs Germany, Euro 96
I remember this game much more vividly than the above match because I was a bit older (14.) It was almost a carbon copy, England going out on penalties, and equally as painful.

3) Spurs vs Nottingham Forest, FA Cup 1991
The first time I saw Spurs win anything, and also the last time for 17 years! It was a good game and famous for being Gazza's last kick of a ball in English football. Honourable mention to the semi final as I remember Gazza scoring that free kick against Arsenal too!

4) Manchester United vs Spurs, PL 2012
This was the game they beat Utd 2-3 and was the first time they won at Old Trafford for 23 years. Probably the most enjoyable PL game I have ever watched Spurs play in as they were massive underdogs.

5) Manchester City vs Spurs, CL 2019
Even though this was only the quarter final and arguably the following win over Ajax was more important and significant, this was the first time in over 10 years that I felt Spurs might actually have luck on their side for once and win something. It wasn't to be, but I danced around the room like a loon after this victory, and arguably neither City or Spurs have been the same since.

So what are yours?

Great question!

Here’s mine:
1) St. Mirren vs Dundee Utd, Scottish cup final 1987
We were absolute underdogs that day, though I don’t think I properly grasped how true that was until a few years later. Utd were in the UEFA cup final that year, but we beat them 1:0 after extra time... what a day!

2) St. Mirren vs Dundee Utd, relegation play-offs 2019
A bad season culminated in the playoffs to try to avoid relegation- it came down to penalties and our keeper saved a few of theirs to keep us up - phew!

3) Ayr Utd vs St. Mirren, Scottish first division league game, 2000
An away game that we won, securing promotion to the Premier League.

4) St. Mirren vs Celtic, Scottish League Cup semi-final, 2013.
Big game at the national stadium, Celtic players trying to wind up the crowd and a 3:2 victory for the Saints to put them in their place. And to reach a national cup final, that we went on to win. Amazing!

5) Scotland vs England, 2018 World Cup qualifier, 2017.
Griffiths putting two free kicks past the keeper within minutes of each other gave us a brief period of absolute joy, which was duly taken away by a rubbish clearance and rubbish defending.

Interesting. Picking five is tough. In no real order.

1) Yugoslavia v’s Slovenia in Euro 2000.
Yeah, sounds like a classic doesn’t it. I was living in holland at the time and applied for tickets. When I applied it was pot luck as groups hadn't been drawn. All the games in Holland had sold out hence I ended up in Charleroi (the place with the stupidly steep stand). I was gutted when I found out who I had got but went along anyway. This was just a few years after Yugoslavia had disintegrated and the hatred between the two sides and fans was palpable. It had been a long time since I had seen that many police in one place at a time. Anyway the game itself was superb, Slovenia went 3 up and 80% of the Yugoslavian (ie Serbian) fans had left. Then Yugoslavia pulled it back to 3-3 and those who were left were having a field day. Great game for a neutral and no trouble that I saw.

2) Norn Iron v’s Engerlund in ‘05
Back when we could score goals and your lot had a decent team. We beat you 1-0 thanks to a David Healy sceamer but from my memory we humped you lot. Clearly I am entirely neutral and my memory would be in no way rose tinted. It was also one of very very very few times that everyone over here was cheering for Norn Iron. Normally your choice of Norn Iron or ROI for football is dependent on your religion, it’s Northern Ireland EVERYTHING splits on religious lines here, but this time everyone was cheering on NI. Even Gerry Adams and Martin Maguinness admitted to celebrating.

3) Pool 4 Barca 0 last season
Not sure I need to say much about this one. Not for a second did I think Pool would win, but they did AND they deserved it as well. The score line did not flatter them. Superb game and all done with Mo Salah and Bobby Firmino watching from the stands.

4) Utd 1 Pool 4 from 2009.
I watched this game in a pub with a few mates and when Utd went one up normally that would be that but the Pool team that season was different and Torres took it on himself to rip Vidic apart like I have never seen anyone rip him apart. Vidic hadn’t a clue what to do and the red card was inevitable from early on. That was during the 18 month period when Torres was truly unplayable. It was just nice to see Pool turn up at OT and take Utd apart as so often Utd had done the same to Pool (at both OT and Anfield). Take note Jurgen, attack at OT don’t sit back and play placid footy.

5) Bristol City 0 Cambridge Utd 1 LDV Vans Southern Section Semi final second leg approx 2000
A mate was a huge U’s fan and I tagged along with him to watch the game, there were maybe 100 Cambridge fans at the game and prob 12-14 thousand City fans. I didn’t know it at the time but Cambridge hadn’t won an away game for about 18 months. They went down either that year or the next and didn’t come back for quite a while. It was literally 11 Cambridge players in their own box hoofing it away for 90mins. Cambridge got 1 corner, scored and won 1-0. We went bonkers. Shite football, daylight robbery, but being there with the few U’s fans when they pulled a miracle from nowhere is definitely one of my all time great memories.

Honorary mentions to Pool’s ‘05 mugging of AC, and Norn Iron beating Spain 3-2 in 2006.

Germany 1 England 5
World Cup Qualifier - Sept 2001

England has never beaten Germany on German soil. They went 1-0 down in the first 10 minutes, though the German lead didn’t last long. But even when Gerard sent in a screamer in first half injury time I don’t think anyone could have predicted what happened in the 2nd half. Michael Owen was electric (everything he did just came off) and even Emile Heskey scored. The party was long and hard.

Juventus 2 Man Utd 3
Champions League Semi Final 2nd leg - Apr 1999

Many Utd fans will probably remember the final between them and Bayern Munich that year but the semi final against Juve was one of the best games I have ever watched and a fantastic game to watch as a neutral. Trailing 2-0 after the first 11 minutes Roy Keane put in a masterclass performance bossing the midfield, scoring the first Utd goal, and even sacrificing his place in the final by getting booked to ensure they took home the Champions League Trophy that year.

Italy 1 - France 1 (5-3 penalties)
World Cup Final - July 2006

This match evokes so many memories for me. I was dating an Italian girl at the time. We watched it at The Green Man in Soho (the heart of little Italy in London) and the victory celebrations afterwards were second to none with Azzuri T-shirt’s and flags being waved everywhere as it seemed hundreds of Italians drove about wild and crazy on mopeds beeping their horns. The match was memorable for that Zidane headbutt and the way Cannavaro (player of the tournament) superbly marshalled his troops. Grosso scores the winning penalty and the whole placed erupted.

England 4 Netherlands 1
Euro 96 - June 1996

This was the end of my first year at uni. It was a glorious summer and Nottingham had been chosen as one of the host cities so there was a huge buzz around the city. There were two classic games of that tournament: the 2-0 win over Scotland with that goal from Gazza and the electric 4-1 win over Holland. I don’t think I’d ever seen England play like that (ever) and the icing on the cake was that a late Holland goal saw them through at the expense of Scotland.

England 2 - Colombia 0
World Cup - June 1998

This one was definitely all about the venue and the people for me. It was my final year at uni in Nottingham. We watched this down ‘The Bush’. It was the year of Chris Evans’ “on the ball” chant (not to be confused with Ant & Dec’s 2002 hit we’re in the ball).

We got hammered, got kicked out of one pub when our on the ball celebrations got too vociferous, accidentally bounced a tyre down a hill into a bus, smashed a window showing off in front of some girls, dropped a bottle of wine in the chippy, and wrapped a giant Budweiser banner round the lot of us. It was quite an expensive night.

It was pre-mobile and the highlight for me was singing on the ball again in another pub much later on. A guy came up to us and said he had to make an important call on the pub pay phone and could we be quiet for a couple of minutes. We all agreed and then as he said hello we all simultaneously burst out into song “he’s on the phone”. Well I guess you had to be there.

As I recall we were all tucked up in bed by 9 and nothing much happened in the game.

These were 2 massively influential games for me to. Platt’s shot off the post in 90 and Gazza’s near miss in 96 were such near euphoric moments.

Yes good call, I watched this match in a local pub with dozens of my school friends and I was so pissed/happy I smashed my phone up

1. Arsenal vs Lyon - last summer at the Emirates
The game wasn’t the best and we lost but it was the first match I took my eldest boy to so has to be number 1.

2. England vs Scotland Euro 96
Paul Gascoigne. That is all

3. Arsenal vs Barcelona 2006 Champions League Final.
Watched in the pub, not in person.
Yes we lost, but it was such an amazing, emotional game. Everyone knew if we won Henry was off but obviously we still wanted to win and I genuinely believe with 11 men on the pitch for 90 minutes we would’ve done. That night was more or less the end of an era, the last chance for many of that group to get a major trophy.

4. Liverpool vs AC Milan 2005 Champions League Final
I was the assistant manager in a pub here in Coventry that had a massive function room with a huge screen and projector set up. I was working that night but got to watch most of the game, the atmosphere in the room was bonkers to start with, then everyone was getting down with every goal pool conceded and then it all went mental after half time followed by a nerve wracking final hour or so.
Absolutely amazing night, and amazingly everyone was a pool fan for the evening.

5. Germany vs England 2001 (1-5)
Obviously this was a false dawn as that side never really delivered but what an ecstatic feeling beating Ze Germans so proficiently.
After conceding in about 5 minutes we both were very much thinking ‘here we go again’ but couldn’t have been more wrong.
I watched this in a working men’s club with my best friend at the time, had a load of beer and couldn’t quite believe what was unfolding in front of us.

My five have mainly been picked based on the occasion rather than being amazing games but there you have it, my top five.

Italia 90 was amazing as well, my parents used to let the spare room to students and during that tournament we had a Spanish guy who’s name escapes me with us for that tournament so there was a great bit of rivalry.

1 Bayern Munich 1 Man Utd 2 1999- Champions League Final - We were pretty crappy the whole game, it was the last match in an amazing season and the historic treble was on the table but we were missing Keane and Scholes, our heart of midfield ripped out. We just didn't fire and were lucky as the Germans should have been out of sight but as long as it stayed 1-0 you knew we had a chance, then that gloating prat Mattaeus was substituted and celebrated as if the game was over with 10 minutes left!! The rest is History and although maybe not the greatest game the way the players never gave up and its significance to the club was awesome...Plus my labourer at the time was a Liverpool fan and the next weeks radio bulletins at lunch time were brilliant as they just kept playing the last moments of the game and the longer the week went on the more pissed off he became!

2 Juventus 2 Man Utd 3 1999- Semi Final- after the draw at OT and to be 2 down so quickly, within 15 minutes in Italy I was gutted and went out as I could watch any more... but listened to it on the radio in the van as I priced a job up. so frustrating and the commentators on the radio were going on about how Juve had outclassed Utd with only 20 minutes played. Then up pops Roy Keane and nods one back, then all of a sudden the commentators change tune and are saying " One more and they are through" Yorke did the honours before half time, it was back home for the second half. Roy Keane was amazing and such a shame that he was cautioned and missed the final

3 England 2 Greece 2 2001 World cup Qualifier- It was supposed to be so easy, beat the Greeks and top the group with Germany in it, as we had thrashed them 5-1 in their own backyard, then head off to the World Cup with our Golden Generation to take the trophy... We had friends round and my wife was getting a bit peeved I was more interested in the TV than guests but what was going on, Greece 1-0 up until midway through the second half, Teddy comes on scores with his first touch I think. YEEESSSS this is it now....then Greece go 2-1 up, and with Germany drawing it looks like we will have to go through the bloody paly offs.. Then up steps Becky in the 93rd minute with that free kick . I bloody screamed and made my wife's friend and her husband both jump   didn't get sex that night

4 Arsenal 2 Man Utd 4- it was the pre tunnel bust up to set things up, like this game needed any more hype, Roy looked like he was ready to kill and great game with Henry, Bergkamp Ronaldo all playing well and you know its your day when O Shea chips the keeper to score.

5 Manchester Utd 4 Charlton 1 2003 - It was the end of the season and Utd were nearly champions, just them and Arsenal in it, but it was special as it was the first game I took my son to OT. He was 10 and in the Megastore wanted Beckham's name and number on his shirt, I said probably best not to ( Real Madrid were calling) and it turned out to be Beckham's last home game, try Ruud :D that day Ruud scored a hattrick but my favourite memory is Roy Keane bollocking Roy Carrol for an absolute piss poor clearance that led to Charlton's goal, in front of 70,00 odd thousand people in front of us.. As it turned out Leeds did us a favour the next day so no more squeaky bum that year

You’re a Utd fan then?! Lol

Its more than being a fan of a club, I think it was also a group of young players, the same age as myself, doing what most lads dreams of, and just watching them achieve everything. And I didn't even include any games when we beat the pool Weasel, although I do remember being on the phone to Jabba whilst one was on, and you had been all over us at Anfield and we scored in the 85th minute much to Jabba's disgust  !!! Although I love watching most football games, I think it is really hard to get as emotionally involved or for a game to mean as much, if it's not the club or country you support. I have probably seen better football matches than the 5 above but none would mean as much.

I’m only joking.

Though if you had included Utd duffing Pool I would have had to ban you.

Ps, you can understand Jabba? That accent of his got me, I needed subtitles or a translator

So you’re saying Pool v Arsenal’89 is off the table as a top five then?

Its a bit like listening to Liam Gallagher talk, just grab every third word and you can just about make out what he says  Is he still about on here?

That game didn't happen. I’m blocking it out.

Not sure TBH. I get a good few WhatsApps from him, but none that could be reposted on a family forum lol. He’s still alive. Not sure if he’s still collecting though.

Ok here are mine a bit boring as an England and Man Utd fan, really hard leaving some matches out but I'm going with the 5 that first came to mind.

1) Buyern Munich 1 - 2 Man Utd, May 1999
Just an incredable change of emotion in the space of 90 seconds, had spent the previous 5 or so years watching Utd fail in europe and it just seemed to me that we would never win it. I watched it at home with my Dad who is not a huge football fan but whent to watch Utd a bit in the 60's and 70's. I remember being really grumpy and saying to him when the 3 minutes came up for injury time that we were never going to win the European Cup again. My Dads reply was 3 minutes is a long time in a game like this, anything could happen! I told him to shut up or something like that.

2) W.Germany 1 - 1 England (PEN 4-3), Italia 90'
Such an iconic World Cup for me, the first I remember. Not a lot to say really apart form it ended in tears and although England probably edged it on the night I don't think anyone can argue that West Germany were the best team in that World Cup, but still, the pain.

3) Man Utd 2 - 1 Spurs, May 1999
First time Utd actually won the Premier League at Old Trafford and I was lucky enough to be their. We had to win to guaranty winning the league after Arsenal had lost to Leeds and we drew with Blackburn in the week before the final day leaving Utd 1 point in front. Spurs whent 1-0 up with a bizarre deflected goal and Beckam drew us level before half time with a brilliant goal. But we new Arsenal would beat Villa so a point would not be enough. Andy Cole came on at half time and scored the winner not long after the break. The atmosphere and tention in that second half was amazing. It all ended well and I got to see Keane lift the trophy, it could have so easily been very different, but the treble loomed.

4) England 1 - 1 Germany (PEN 5-6) Euro 96'
So many memories from this summer, the year I left school and had dreams of England winning the Euros. The Scotland and Holland games could easily be in this list as well. I really thought it was our turn that year and how we didn't win in extra time I will never know, but it wasn't to be.

5) Man Utd 1 - 0 Crystal Palace, FA Cup Final replay May 1990
The first trophy I remember Man Utd winning, was away on a school field trip and remember thinking I was going to miss the replay after an epic 3-3 draw in the first game, when a certain Ian Wright came on and destroyed us. I was the only Utd fan on the trip, amazing I know, but Liverpool were the team then and Arsenal and Spurs even Everton seemed more popular!! Everyone else wanted Palace to win. Anyway a teacher took about 5 of us to watch the first half before being sent to our tents and lights out at half time and 0-0. The next morning I found out we had won, phoned my Dad to make sure he had recorded it, got home the following day and remember replaying Lee Martins Winner and Brian Robson lifting the cup over and over.

Sorry its Man Utd and England heavy, I feel like I should do another 5 that don't involve either teams. Their are so many other games that could be their, football meant a lot to me growing up, my Mum and Dad always as me when such and such happened as they know I can connect it to a football match and google the date.

Aye, it is tough to pick five and as jayjedi says we do tend to focus on games we care about a lot more and by default those include our club and or country.

TBF even as a non English Pool fan, I can understand why most of the games have been picked. Even if I preferred the first 92 mins of that final in ‘99. Lol
And I suspect most Utd fans enjoyed the first half of the 05 final a lot more than the second.

The England Holland game from Euro ‘96 was considered for my top 5. As much for the fact I loved Euro ‘96, I was just about old enough to buy beer and that obviously had no bearing on it at all.

Yeah the Liverpool v AC Milan final would be up their for sure, also the Liverpool v Newcastle 4-3, albeit I watched it on teletext.

Liverpool v Arsenal 89' title decider as well, remember watching that one. So many.

Pool against Dortmund in EL Quarter finals from a few years ago. Barca beating PSG 6-1 in 2017.
The 5-0 beating Barca gave Real in 2010. Always nice to see Real get hammered, especially when Jose was managing them. The Newcastle Arsenal 4-4 draw. The Newcastle 5-0 (?) against Man U when Albert scored that lob. The Spurs Chelsea game from a couple of years ago when Spurs lost and lost it mid game, there could/should have been about 8 red cards. The play off final where yer man dives to win a pen in stoppage time, keeper saves it and Watford (?) go up the other end and score a winner.

There are so many

OK been thinking about this one.

Going to do two lists, this first one is matches I was at live. During 90s/00s I went regularly, Gillingham season ticket holder for three seasons during the championship years.

1. Liverpool 3 Everton 1 (FA CUP FINAL 1986)
My first ever live football match, hadn't really taken any notice of football except from 1986 world cup and league sticker albums, but my Uncle managed to get four tickets for me, him, my Dad and my cousin. I don't remember too much of the day as I was only 7, but I fell in love with Football that day and Liverpool. I can remember having a poster from Shoot or Match of Craig Johnston on my wall for the next year after this game.

2. Gillingham 1 Wolves 3 (1988, Division 3)
My first real memorable match, living in Kent, Gillingham is the only league team we have, apart from a small flit from Maidstone at one point but scummy Southend managed to get them kicked out because of their ground. My Dad is a huge Wolves fan so often go and see them, we were standing in the away end, the days of the huge steel barriers, Steve Bull scored twice and both times he jumped up on the metal grill, I was at the front and when he did it the whole crowd rushed forward, when you're a small kid that rush even in a small crowd was quite intense.

3. England 1 Brazil 3 (Umbro Cup 1995)
This was a school trip for the football team, we had won the district school cup and as a well done our coach took 15 of us up to Wembley. Ronaldo, Carlos, Dunga, Leonardo. Such a great day. Sadly my mate was starving and spent the whole first half moaning, we shot off with about 6 minutes left till the break to get a hot dog, we were under the concourse and the place erupted above our heads, Le Saux had scored and we had bloody missed it. England were one nil up, Brazil schooled us second half. My mate got expelled when he got back to school due to mooning out of the mini bus window. We were school leavers anyway so didn't really matter.

4. England 2 Scotland 0 (Euro 96)
By this point I was spending most weekends at a football match, me and my mates spent the late 90s trying to visit loads of different grounds. I went to three Euro 96 matches, went to the Switzerland opener which was ok, but this match is so memorable, one of the greatest matches and the end of the game none of the crowd left, just stayed singing three lions, that song brings back so many memories. I also went to the final of the competiton but don't really have many memories of it, just remember on the day it felt low that England weren't in the final and they should have been. That semi final day was horrendous, England lost a match in which they played well and my Nan died that evening.

5. Gillingham 2 Man City 2 (2nd Division Play-off Final 1999)
Gills at Wembley was amazing. And for 80 minutes it was 0-0 and Vince Bartram had kept us in it all match, within five minutes Carl Asaba and Robert Taylor put us two up with five minutes to play. City got one back and there was only a couple of minutes of added on time, or so we thought, the ref let is play and play until Dickov equalised in something like the 6th/7th minutes of stoppage time which didn't exist, still irritates me now. Gills got stuffed on penalties with some of the worst spot kicks you'll ever see. This game made me go and get a season ticket for the following year though and that year we went to Wembley again, this time getting promoted.

I'll have a think about the other five games that are my favourites which I've just seen.
