I watched the re-run of the 1990 World Cup semi-final between England and Germany on iPlayer yesterday, and I really enjoyed seeing it again. It's one of the earliest matches I can remember watching on TV, I would have been 8 at the time. So it got me thinking, what are your top 5 most memorable football matches from any year or competition? Here's mine:
1) England vs Germany, World Cup 1990
An obvious one but despite being young I remember the hype around this game, and the agony when we lost. It was England's greatest football achievement for 50 odd years until we reached the semi final again in 2018.
2) England vs Germany, Euro 96
I remember this game much more vividly than the above match because I was a bit older (14.) It was almost a carbon copy, England going out on penalties, and equally as painful.
3) Spurs vs Nottingham Forest, FA Cup 1991
The first time I saw Spurs win anything, and also the last time for 17 years! It was a good game and famous for being Gazza's last kick of a ball in English football. Honourable mention to the semi final as I remember Gazza scoring that free kick against Arsenal too!
4) Manchester United vs Spurs, PL 2012
This was the game they beat Utd 2-3 and was the first time they won at Old Trafford for 23 years. Probably the most enjoyable PL game I have ever watched Spurs play in as they were massive underdogs.
5) Manchester City vs Spurs, CL 2019
Even though this was only the quarter final and arguably the following win over Ajax was more important and significant, this was the first time in over 10 years that I felt Spurs might actually have luck on their side for once and win something. It wasn't to be, but I danced around the room like a loon after this victory, and arguably neither City or Spurs have been the same since.
So what are yours?
