When will the bubble burst...?

Some bubbles do lift over time as the adhesive dries out and loses its bond so I do think they probably will fall off and there are almost certainly examples of this already.

They certainly won't last forever, they were designed to last a matter of months! Even 100 year old paper and cardboard is incredibly fragile now, so that gives MOCs about another 50-60 years before they start falling apart.

I'd say when it literally dose burst... i.e when the toys start to deteriorate from age, bubble falling from card's ect... the value will depreciate, how long will that be....... Not too sure..

Bubbles yellowing yes - but falling off?

Yeah definitely, I am not talking about next month I am talking years away maybe not even in our lifetime but it will eventually happen... unfortunately.

Don't forget the toys are only 38 years old so we have no guarantee how these things will hold up in say another 30 years or even further into the future....

They'll outlive us that's for sure but god help the kids of the guys buying up carded figures as investments.... Fast forward to 2056, the kids finally get the keys to the safety deposit box their parents left them and...just dust

"Gee thanks Dad"

That is insane - and for that very reason the bubble has to burst

When lose blasters sell for £200 it's time to sell up, and if we all did that the bubble would have to burst as the market would be flooded

I bought a one of a kind proof card for less than that!!!

I really dont understand the hostility towards FB on here other than possibly inferiority complex. Yes there are new collectors out of control and the constant mail call posts and ironic ebay price exposès are tedious but it is a fast paced marketplace where bargains pop up all the time (12 back R2D2 lasst night for $299 anyone)?

Im an old time collector from the 90's who sold up in 2005 then came back last year. When I first revisited the forums I though the hobby had literally died. Little did I realise at the time it had just moved to FB.

I have build a mid range 12 back set in a year for around £2300 so the deals are still about, but mostly on FB as far as I have seen.

Agreed there are some great bargains to be had. It's like one huge car boot sale with some sellers taking the mick but some sellers offering great prices for a quick sale.
My problem is I've got so little spare time for looking I always miss the bargains.

The bubble will burst, or will fall off depending on which iron was used.

Seriously though, people have been questioning us collectors for years - even when we were paying £50 for Palitoy logo cards etc in the late 80,s early 90's. Ill agree that prices are insane, but it will only calm when people realise that it is a false economy for the most part. Everything is a risk, and only when the fly by nights dissapear will it decline. The new movies are pushing it to the limits, but it remains to be seen when exactly it will wane.

I couldnt give a toss really. My collection is for my own enjoyment. I paid what i wanted to pay (actually very cheap) but although monetary value will always play a small part, its nostalgia that drives me.

Anyways, no amount of money can buy the fact that i saw the OT when it was first released - i was one of the SW kids :D

Well that makes me feel a lot better as I sold my 12 back set for about the same amount about 5 years ago in the same condition. I keep seeing the odd 12 back going for nearly the entire amount of late but I guess unless it's a AFA 85 it probably won't get sold for that. It's a shame that the main interest seems to be on how much things are sold for rather than what the item actually looks like but I guess it's the sign of the times.

I'm happy with what I have, which I'm thankful of with the way things have risen in value. For me it's time to concentrate on other vintage pursuits from my childhood and in a funny way I'm just hoping all the attention is on Star Wars  Saying that though it seems like any vintage toy at the moment is going for big bucks so you can't really win with what ever tickles your fancy. At least there are a few modern items that are worth picking up and are priced at the right amount ( non Star Wars), this at least means I can still build a collection that brings a smile to my face rather than thinking I'm keeping food out of my children mouths.

It is what it is at the moment and people will always pay what they want for what they feel they need. Who knows what it'll all be worth in a few years time but if you buy only what you really want and not what some place is telling you you need then it doesn't really matter what it cost you as long as it's doing no harm. Everyone deserves to own a piece of vintage that takes their fancy but just don't over stretch yourselves, it's really not worth it and you'll never enjoy the item as you should.

Ian

This is a very important statement, and one that i live by. I will not buy anything beyond my means and people getting into severe debt is a very worrying trend in this hobby. Ive known collectors who have lost marriages, propertys etc just because they cannot resist the urge to be THAT person who owns THAT piece.

Danny, I know you're a big FB fan. And you are absolutely right, there are some really, really great bargains to be had on FB. There are also an awful lot of tosspots that don't get called out about being tosspots because of rules like "no price bashing". A big reason that many of those same tosspots aren't here is because it tends to get pointed out to them. Quite quickly.

As for inferiority complex, that's interesting. I personally feel it's the other way around but I guess that's a common enough situation when (big generic statement alert) two groups don't see eye-to-eye. I think a lot of the anti FB feeling is simply because of the typical member here: old skool. I mean come on; most of us have at least part of our souls stuck in the 70s and 80s. FB is so this millennia! It's something our kids use. Until I used it for SW groups (I'm now a member of about 15 or so) I didn't use it at all. I despised it. Mainly because it exposes everything that's wrong with the world and, in particular, this country.....but don't get me started on that :D I still despise Facebook and I believe I always will. Won't stop me using it for buying OR selling as there is no doubt it's the place for quick sales. And I've made some really, really good friends on there, too. But, as with society as a whole, it does expose the less pleasant side of collecting (over priced goods, "have-it-all-and-have-it-immediately" mentality and ill informed opinions shared with the whole community) that isn't tolerated on places like this. And before anyone gets too defensive I in no way mean that's the only content on FB, just that it exposes it. It's no wonder at all that the majority of those that weren't already FB users ran a mile when they dipped their toe in. It has it's place in collecting I just think we need to agree to disagree about each medium's relative worth and move on with our lives. If you don't like forums, stick to FB and if you don't like FB stick to forums. And if you benefit from both, continue to do so. How hard can that be?

I'm quite sure that the people on here that are anti FB or that make comments about FB groups, their members and the general lack of knowledge that is often shown on that platform have not got an inferiority complex Danny.

If anything, it might be the other way around! Especially when you consider that certain people who prefer to use FB, do so in order to limelight the same collection pics in multiple groups for no other reason than to receive all those "like" notifications.

You can literally become movie star famous overnight just by posting a picture on there and people know it..doesn't matter what you know, how long you've been around or what you actually contribute to this hobby/community! I've seen complete tossers who have done nothing for this hobby other than benefit themselves referred to as "masters"..just for posting pictures of their toys!

TBH you only really have to look at how many community projects/guides have come out since the groups took over from the forums. Could you (or anyone else) name me 5 guides or resources that have come from the FB groups or that FB users have worked on? Ok that might be a hard task..lets try 3?........ok..Erm..1? See what I mean? Yet all of the guides and websites that forum users have worked on over the years are constantly linked to and referred to..

Lets be honest, in that sense - the groups really don't exist for "useful" reasons. They don't give anything back to the community even though they bring collectors together and offer them a place to chat, trade and take part in the occasional bit of drama!

I'm not trying to be rude about FB groups or their place in the hobby though because I use them daily too and I'm a moderator of 2 or 3..but I wouldn't give up the forums for FB groups for all the toys in the world.

Are you staring up a Forum/FB hybrid, Mark?
