Premier League Discussion Thread Season 2014-15

Ohh are we talking about history now................ :D

TBH, I act think the lack of a group stage makes it harder, one **** up and you're staring down the barrel. Although, that is countered by the fact that in those days the Champions League was only open to actual champions, not teams who may have finished 5th (Liverpool and Real Madrid, both once). So the general standard of opposition was lower. Then again, travel wasn't as easy as it is now. Zenith St Petersberg away, easy, quick 3 hour flight, sorted. In the 70's and 80's it wasn't quite so simple.
Hard to compare across the years/generations.

It's always been the competition to win for the top European sides simple as that. Liverpool still the most successful English club by about 2 European Cups so no I don't wan't to talk about history.

True that.

Kinda why I don't get all the fuss about Pool not having won the Pl/title for so long. They've won the Champions League in that time and in my eyes that's a higher standard and harder comp to win. Sure, i'd love to see them win the league, but offered a choice between PL or CL it's no competition for me. Though I suspect i'm in a minority there.

This away goals rule only counting in extra time is a stupid rule, game should be over now. The whole idea of away goals rule is to stop extra time and penalties. Plus Liverpool have now got an extra 30 minutes to score an away goal than what Chelsea had. If both teams score in extra time it will go to penalties.

Agreed, that game was a real battle tho both teams lucky to finish with 11 men.
Gotta love Branislavs Drogba goal celebration.

I do agree on the away goals thing, but I suspect it's done to try and make the worthless cup a bit different. Tiz bollocks though.

Thoughts on last night,

* There was virtually nothing between those two sides. After the cluster-**** of a season Liverpool have had it's nice to see them back playing some good football against one of the biggest sides in the league. Although their inability to win the home game after almost complete domination ultimately cost them.

* Fair play to both keepers a series of top notch saves, Courtois in both legs, he in particular looks like a fantastic player. Mingolet actually looked like a different player, there may just be a future for him an Anfield

* Balotelli on the other hand, must be having a last pint after the Last Chance Saloon has called last orders and the fat lass is adjusting her microphone on stage. His general play isn't "bad" it's just totally unsuited to Liverpool's style and he doesn't seem to realise/care or want to adapt. The first three halves of the tie had Liverpool causing Chelsea problems by pressing high and hard. Balotelli won't do that, that involves running, he doesn't seem to have mastered that yet. Not only that, when he gets the ball he holds on to it for far too long. One incident springs to mind with 2 mins to go he had an easy 5 yard pass back to Henderson but instead insisted on trying to hold off and then beat two Chelsea defenders, before a third Chelsea player cleared the loose ball. Chance gone and possession lost. Then there's the goal. He gives the ball away with a loose pass and then doesn't feel any need to mark his man. I think it was Gary Neville who said games at this level are decided by the finest margins, a moment of genius or a player switching off for half a second. Mario was the latter, for most of the time he was on the pitch.

*On that note, It was a brave move by Rodgers to bring him on. He has been, I'll be generous, poor this season, certainly when compared to Lallanna. Yet he gets the nod. I suspect it was a case of "Mario, Jose said you're ****, go and prove him wrong." Sadly it didn't work. In fact it cost Liverpool the game (though granted they would have lost on away goals anyway, but psychologically the damage was done by conceding).

* Costa is a lucky boy. The second stamp on Skertl, I would have given him the benefit of the doubt, had he not already done it to Can. I suspect it was deliberate. We've all played sport and you know when you are going to stand on someone and most normal people would adjust their stride pattern accordingly, but Costa didn't. Mind you, I happy to give him the benefit of the doubt given it COULD have been an accident and it didn't look as blatant as the first. Which was a red card, all day long. I'll be amazed if he doesn't get a retrospective ban.

* The penalty Chelsea didn't get was a penalty. Simple as. The ref dropped a bollock there. You could argue it cancels out him not sending off Costa, or that Costa shouldn't have been on the pitch to be fouled but, that doesn't stop it being a penalty.

* The Henderson hand ball. It's a strange one. I've seen it a few times and I'm still not 100% sure if it's hand ball, ball to hand, or he's leaning in trying to block it with his body and it hits his arm. Either way I have seen them given, probably more often than not, so he can consider himself lucky. I suspect had he not been booked already he would have been. Does that mean we have a new category of foul, that is "bad enough for a yellow, if you haven't been booked already, but not bad enough for a second yellow/red"?

* The intensity of the game and the fact it went the extra half hour, must have had City and WH sat rubbing their hands with glee. Especially as Fabregas went off injured (Filipe Luis as well, but he doesn't count) and Costa most be looking at a ban. City might have a chance now, if they can just remember how to play.

* Had Liverpool won, and assuming Spurs win their game with Sheff Utd, looking at Pool's record against Spurs in the last 3 or 4 games (is 12-0 on aggregate to Pool?) I'd have put my house on Spurs to win! As it stands I'll be cheering them on if only so I don't have to see John Terry's smiling happy face. Although I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't stick a Spurs kit on and try and join in their celebrations (if they win).

A Huge shout out to Che Adams who was absolutely fantastic tonight against Spurs. He hails from Ilkeston which is a stones throw from me and was playing for Ilkeston FC not (Ilkeston Town like the BBC/Sky are reporting  ) just last November.

Certainly a name to keep an eye on! 8)

Che Adams - you sure that's not Ched sneaking back to Utd under a different name

The streets were really buzzing outside Brammall lane last night - a real shame spurs equalised

That is a mouthful!

Can't see an upset there but you never know

I also can't see tottingham beating Chelsea twice in a season, but you never know :)

So. Chelsea and City Drew 1-1 Man Utd move into third and the Psycho has left Forest (Shock horror) I think it was only a matter of time despite the Derby result.

Would love to see Tim Sherwood given the job! 8)

Didn't seem to be working for Stuart Pearce at Forest.

Chelsea City wasn't the best game i've ever seen, but then you knew Mourinho would play for a draw, especially given they had two big players out.

Gonna be close for the two remaining CL spots. Everyone down to Pool are still in with a shout. I suspect you can rule WH out now, they won't go on the sort of run they need to AND have al, the teams above the, drop enough points.
Could see any of the others getting it, but none would exactly strike fear into the big european teams.

Yep it's really hotting up now, I reckon 1st-3rd will stay how they are but 4th is open to about 5 teams at the moment. It was only a matter of time until Southampton were put in their place, and West Ham were punching above their weight. I'm sure Arsenal will fluke it on the last day of the season as usual but at least it's open.

Speaking of which, game of the season this Saturday! Won't be going to the game this year, I really didn't enjoy it last year, football is supposed to be fun not a riot.

Pearce replaced already by Dougie Freedman former Crystal Palace and Bolton Manager. All aboard the Fawaz circus again! Poor choice AGAIN.

SIXTH manager in just over two years!

I'm not convinced by United Edd. They haven't looked 'good' in a single game this year. They'll be found out soon enough, or at least their luck will turn.

United haven't been convincing for about 5 seasons now!

Infact I can't remember a side winning the league for a long time and being able to say they have been fantastic all season. You could argue Liverpool had the best sustained run last season, but didn't win the league. You could have said it about Chelsea this season up to about a month ago and I guess if they pick up again then you will be able to say that about them at the end of this season.

UTD won the league by 11 points in 2013 and evan that season every single week you heard or read the same report, UTD weren't at their best but they ground out a result.

True that. I do rate that Utd team as the worst/weakest team to win the PL in years. Before Utd fans get upset, they won the league, so what does that say about everyone else?

Wouldnt be upset at that statement. Its completely true and we were simply the best of a bad bunch that season.

What about the 2011 season, UTD won the league with 80 points and still won it by 9 points.

I don't forget the 3 titles in a row though from 2007 to 2009. We were quality for those 3 seasons and broke all the clean sheet records.
