Premier League Discussion Thread Season 2014-15

Lol at Soldado's miss.

Saying that, I am actually surprised how bad he has been at spurs. I expected him to do well. He is not the sort of player that will score you a 30 yard screamer. Most of his goals are 5-15 yards out, but then Jermaine Defoe was pretty much that type of player as well and he did rightly at Spurs. I guess it's just one of those transfers that for no real reason hasn't worked out. When Spurs sell him I expect he'll go and score plenty at his next club. ATM, he couldn't score with the ball on the line and a tornado blowing it in.

Yeah will be interesting to see MOTD today, looked like a hammering!

I didn't enjoy the Spurs v Sunderland game today, I think Spurs were lucky to win despite having 70 odd percent possession. It was an unwelcome reminder of how we used to play with AVB in charge, all the possession but no goal threat. As usual utter chaos every time the ball was in their own half

No idea why Vertonghen's second goal was disallowed! Every call that linesman made was wrong today.

Wow,  :? I've just seen that. Genuinly one of the worst decisions ever made. Because it wasn't a mistake or something mis-seen. It was just purely the lines-man not knowing the basic rules of football. There's no other possible explanation for it. That's all it was.
You can't be off-side in your own half. A 15 year old knows that. Vertonghen was 6 or 7 feet inside his own half when he received the ball. The lino saw that but not knowing the rules of off-side flagged Vertonghen for off-side. And that's why i think it's one of the worst decision i've ever seen. Incredible.
The officials i this league are a ****ing embarrassment. That proves it's got **** all to do with "it's a tough job". That's just good old fashioned incompetence.

I honestly don't see how in clear-cut situations like this, mistakes can't be rectified after the match. If Spurs had drawn or lost because of it I'd be furious, but even though they still won the extra goal difference isn't to be sniffed at. Surely the FA could just adjust the table accordingly?

I'd love to know what was going through the linesman's head - surely by his rules, if the entire team stays in the opponents half, then the opponents can't score

What are you two talking about, he's clearly offside, look!

Wow! I've seen it already but it never gets less shocking. I'd say that's a good 10 yards in his own half.
Worst off-side decision of all time?? :?
I repeat; it's not cos he missed it or mis-saw it, he just didn't know you weren't off-side if you're in your own half, something you learn in your teens when you start playing football, which makes it an incredible error.

Yeah if a manager can be fined for criticising a referee, surely a referee should be punishable for not knowing the rules! I know it's "the old fashioned way" but I'd happily ditch physical/human referees and linesman on the pitch in favour of surveillance. I don't mind if it adds a few seconds to each decision, at least they will be right!

EDIT: Also, why the **** did the referee not over-rule the decision? He can clearly see he's on-side.

Only Chris Foys knows the answer to that Incredible

Definitely. I've believed off-sides and certain other things should start being decided by someone with a monitor who can alert the ref and linesman. Would take no more than 4 or 5 seconds and would often be instantaneous.

To be fair, referees and linesmen do get punished for making huge mistakes like that. It's unlikely that linesman will line at the top level again for a while. but it's not good enough. Mistakes like that should simply never happen. Ever.
Once of these decisions in a season ought to be a scandal but we get glaring, game deciding errors in every single game. Just off the top of my head the Newcastle Southampton game where Newcastle weren't awarded a blatant pen. There are probably 6 or 7 others just like it in this weekends fixtures alone. What other profession and institution would allow such regular and severe incompetence? It really is beyond a joke.

Yeah the standard of refereeing this season has been pathetically low. They seem to get more wrong than right. Though i have heard the refs actually want the use of technology for offsides etc, FIFA wont allow it, and obv the FA wont let the refs speak to the media so they cant ad their voices to the calls for it.

Mirallas, what the **** were you playing at, mate?? :?
May have cost Everton the game tonight. Deservedly dropped at half time.

Feel a bit for Martinez - not a lot else he can say after that - think that sort of thing shows why he isn't a top manager yet - no one would have done that to Mourinho or Ferguson

Yeah I watched it and was a strange game, the crowd were pretty much booing both teams throughout the first half because it was such a stalemate, and then that penalty  I imagine West Brom are pretty happy with the result!

Surely Miralles has to have been ripped a new on by Martinez!?

Definitely. They tried to cover it up afterwards but they were livid. Cost them 3 points in the end. And me 60 quid.

HOW did Liverpool not win that?

They hammered Chelsea for 90 mins. Bar one daft penalty, which I think was kinda soft. Yeah, there was contact and in the modern game they are given, but **** me I've seen six year olds stay on their feet after contact like that. Did Chelsea even have another shot?

I don't think it will matter too much, even had Pool won 2-1 I'd still fancy Chelsea to win at Stanford Bridge. Just frustrating that Pool can out play the best team in the league so comprehensively, yet two weeks ago they made MK Dons look good.

Yeah, you guys have nothing up front tho, that's the problem. The penalty was 100% imo but Liverpool were the better team. With a striker you may have been in danger of actually winning.
