Premier League Discussion Thread Season 2014-15

I played hockey to a decent level and it has the "advantage" rule and I know every umpire I ever spoke to said it's a grey area. Where does the advantage stop? If a player is tripped by a keeper but rounds the keeper (who lies prone on the ground and no longer influences play) and has more than enough time to right himself (say it was a long ball and he was the only one within 20 yards of the net, no off sides in hockey) but he then inexplicably misses from 5 yards, do you award a penalty or is that his own fault for being a squinty bastard.

I was trying to get at the same using the Torres example. If he is fouled but gets up and then ****s the chance under no pressure, does he still get the penalty? I'm guessing you say 'yes'. I suppose to an extent that removes inconsistencies between what refs deem to have been sufficient time to recover or the degree to which the foul would have put him off.

Yes but it's just common sense and everywhere else on the pitch the referees actually have always handled that rule perfectly so there's no problem there. You obviously only allow a very short amount of time before a foul - play-on/advantage - and deciding that the was no advantage available and pulling play back. You obviously don't let a player run the length of the pitch cross the ball in there box and then the striker misses a header so you pull play back.
It's no different in the box, but with possibly a smaller time frame to consider. A player gets nicked buy the keeper, stumbles, takes one step and then shoots and misses. It's a pen. Simple. Doesn't matter if his talent made him miss or the keeper. That's completely irrelevant. It was a foul. That's why you're awarding the pen.

I see what you mean Pete, but the only way to make that work would be to remove the advantage rule. If you get fouled at the half way line but continue and miss, you don't get the free kick. So it shouldn't be any different in the box. An advantage is supposed to be just that, a better chance of scoring than the free kick/penalty would have been, but neither are guaranteed a goal. It's definitely a grey area.

Very happy with the Hammers yesterday. Yes, it was against a manageress Palace, but we played in a similar fashion vs the Spuds last week, but didn't get the reward. Blessing in disguise that Nolan is injured- Zarate looks superb. Kouyate also looks like a bargain. Very impressed with him so far 8)

Look - Arsenal are unlikely to win the league. There are two better teams and other squads are improving. But to be written off because of a draw away to Everton is bollocks. How many teams will beat Everton away?
Yes the performance was again poor but these commentators have not got a bloody clue. I also think that Michael Owen has overtaken the entire ITV team as the shittest commentator. Gary Neville, as much as I hated him, is one of the best.

I was at the Spurs QPR game today so may as well enjoy my 5 minutes at the top of the table  I know it was 'only' QPR but it was the most convincing I've seen Spurs play for a long time. Fairly solid defence (Dawson finally gone, Rose actually doing some defending for a change) and they figured out how to score and kept doing it. Hopefully more of the same to come.

Looks like United struggled against Sunderland, were people seriously expecting a new manager to turn them from Newcastle in to Real Madrid? It just doesn't work that way.

Edd, how did Eriksen play? I have him in my fantasy team and he's done FA for the last two weeks.

Utd didn't look good, same as under Moyes, very slow going forward and very little movement off the ball. Still they are spunking 64 million quid on ANOTHER attacking midfielder so that'll solve all their problems! The phrase "desperation" springs to mind.

Can some one explain that to me? Their defence has two kids in it and they spunk 70 million on someone who Real are desperate to get rid of (nice negotiating Ed Woodward!) and who plays in a position that won't really work with 5 at the back. Maybe a CB or two might be a better way to spend the money. Or maybe a DCM? Def not an attacking mid when you have Young, Valencia, Januzi, Kagawa, and Mata, plus Nani on loan.
What is the obsession managers in the PL have with light weight attacking midfielders when they already have a bucket load? Arsenal spunked however much on Sanchez when they needed a ****ing striker!

He didn't do much today but did hit the bar from a free kick, was unlucky.

Who wrote them off after drawing with Everton?? :? I must have missed that but it was someone who knows nothing about football, i can tell you that much. No one beats Everton at home. I rate Arsenal highly but i picked a draw in the predictions league because only 3 teams beat Everton at Goodison last season and i think only 2 the season before. Very formidable at home as everyone knows.

I took out Jovetic and Lamala after last week and they both smashed it. Brilliant.

Really sorry to hear this Pete

Yeah, me too. Gutted for you, really, i am!

Why did you ditch them after one week? Wee bit premature. I have Mata, Rooney, Jones, Eriksen, Giroud, and Dzeko, none of whom are filling me with much confidence ATM, but i'm holding fire before ditching them. The season is only 2 games old. It may well come back to bite me on the ass, but sure.

Because i saw a better selection possibility and i knew if i didn't act right away i would be able to afford that team within the next week as the prices of those players would rise. So i had to make a quick descision. And i was right. I put Sterling and Shurrle in in place of Lamala and Jovetic. And both Sterling and Shcurrle's price has already risen. I undoubtedly have a stronger team all round now so it was the right move. Just bad luck that those 2 players scored so well.

WTF!?

I know they're having a hard time, but seriously come on! It's like there's some sabotage going on.

A team including, Kagawa, Welbeck Hernandez, Januzaj and Evans and De Gea. The only players to come out of the match with an ounce of respectability were DeGeea and Nick Powell

Crazy story tonight as Ludogorets of Bulgaria have qualified for the CL Group Stages for the first time. They were only founded in 2001 and after winning promotion to the Bulgarian Pemier League for the first time they have won the lleague every year since!
Even more bonkers is the fact that their keeper was sent offer in ET after they had made all their subs in their qualifing game against Steaua Burcharest ! Their centre back coincidentally is from Burcurahest and had to go in net and pulled off to great saves to win for them. Absolutely crazy?!

Their stadium only holds 8,000 and is not up to the CL GroupStage standard tho - http://www.insideworldfootball.com/world-football/europe/15323-ludogorets-face-stadium-crisis-if-they-qualify-for-cl-group-stages

Great story!

**** League Cup Draw tonight too. Although there is a interesting tie between Spurs and Forest at the Lane! 8)

I saw the penalties on SS last night. They were doing a round up of the games and I was trying to figure out who to get in for the now crippled Giroud in my fantasy team. Was brilliant to watch.

Ohh and as for Utd.

7 goals in two games, finally Spurs seem to have figured out how to score without Bale :) Looking forward to Sunday's game against Pool now, should be a bit more evenly-matched than last year
