Premier League 24/25 Thread

Well, I didn't see that coming. We actually looked like a team and really well. Paqueta and Soler turned up for a change and Bowen was superb.
Yes, the ONE ****ING WEEK I benched Soucek in my fantasy team!

Lampard to Coventry looks a strange one. I'd argue the Championship is even tougher than the PL to be successful, and he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I have no idea why Chairmen see someone who was a great player and think they'll be good managers. It's a totally different skill set. Some can do it, Pep is an alright manager. Carlo Ancellotti has won a few trophies. But the vast vast majority are just various shades of ****ing shite.

If you needed brain surgery you wouldn't employ some bloke who has had loads of lobotomies. You'd employ a ****ing surgeon. So why think a player will know how to manage?

Sacking yer man Robins seemed harsh. Employing Frank is only going to get them relegated. Still, at least the Chairman can say he employs Frank Lampard 🙄

Nearly all football managers played previously. If I was a player, I'd prefer a manager who had experienced playing. Throughout history, it's slim pickings finding a top quality manager who never played professionally,.. https://www.give esport.com/best-managers-never-played-professional-football-ranked/

There's a difference between playing professionally and playing consistently at the very highest level. Wenger was a great manager, but not so good as a player. Same with Mourinho. Henry was an amazing player, as was Vieira, but as managers they are definitely not top drawer.

Giving Sporting a hiding mid week was pretty good as well.

And whilst I'd take the penalty we got for the punch, I'd feel very hard done by of the roles were reversed

Yeah, "Great" players.
Those who won PL's or played in the very latter stages of the CL.
Fergy and Klopp both played but were fairly mediocre players. Of those who have played in our time, I'm assuming most of us are mid 40's ish so ball park the PL era, 90% who were "great players" have been appalling managers.

Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes, Steve Bruce, Tony Adams, Patrick Viera, GNev, Phil Neville, Barnsey, wazza, Stevie G, Fat Frank, Sol,Campbell etc. etc.

Ps, best managers who never played professional football, and ehhh Brendan Rodgers? Really? There's a guy from Portugal who never played football, he's a better manager, he thinks he's quite 'special' too!

I saw a few complaining about a push for Arsenal's first goal. The replay I have seen, there is a push, it's not blatant, but it may well be enough to knock yer man off balance and mean he misses the ball allowing Arsenal to score.
That's the kind of borderline foul/non foul that Arsenal are very good at.

It looks like it may not have affected the outcome though.

Zidane is an exception, not sure he counts though as he hasn't managed anyone other than Real Madrid.

Weirdly, his record at Real isn't that great, if (and yes, it's a big "if") you ignore the CL. His domestic record is pretty mediocre.
He's still better than all those I listed above

Yeah true 3 UCL in a row was impressive, I would like to see him try some where else. I've watched and read a lot about his time at Madrid and it sounds like he was just mates with all the players and made them feel special. Tactically he wasn't anything special and he had prime Ronaldo, Modric, Bale, Veran and Casemiro. I don't want to mention the other centre back.

Where is the push sorry? Or who is pushed? I'm attempting to be objective and not just saying Arsenal are fine, but all I see is fairly standard jostling, and the only player near the keeper is a WH player?

Yep, some managers didn't have the best playing career, Klopp for example. Some top managers played at the highest level and are among the best managers in the game at the moment. Guardiola won the European Cup with Barca as a player and Ancelotti won the European Cup playing for Milan

Timber runs across the area, with the sole purpose of pushing Paqueta (on the front post) in the back, so he misses the header. 100% gets disallowed down the other end.

Arsenal were streets ahead and totally deserved the win. Played some excellent football at times, against a very limp WHU. However, the ref was truly abysmal and Arsenal's antics were embarrassing. They clearly have a drama coach on their staff. I hate it when Paqueta does that sort of stuff- really cringe. Georginho standing right in front of Fabs, when he's arranging a wall (Neville describing it as 'being good at the details'!) rolling around like they've been shot at every opportunity, complaining to the ref etc etc. Everything I hate about the game and these teams just seem to get away with it. The game's gone. It's sad and really puts me off watching anymore.

Looks like the bubbles burst for Villa, Chelsea flying. Everton are really bad, so not reading to much into Man Utd's result.

@lejackal, @Cazza described the foul pretty much spot on.

Arsenal are superb at those sort of things from corners, Ben White and his standing on the keeper thing is another example. It's pushing the limits of being a foul, and it seems to help them, but while they get away with it, they'll continue to do it.

And, I have to agree, Arsenal are very fond of rolling about the ground and time wasting. All big teams do the 'professional foul' and break up play on the break. Peak City and Pool were brilliant at it. Arsenal's time wasting did really bug me when Pool played them. I was swearing at the tv when they kept falling over. Weirdly once the ref stopped falling for it and the penny dropped, they stopped doing it.

And yes, Pool are no saints, and I'm sure there are plenty of examples of them diving, time wasting etc. but Arsenal seem to be dong it a lot more. Newcastle did it a few years ago too.

Spurs being Spursy. I really do feel sorry for Spurs fans. That inconsistency would do my head in.

@theforceuk, don't worry about Everton, they have a derby on Sat morning so they'll turn into….I was gonna say "peak Brazil" but it's kore likely to be "peak Fat Sam"

FAC draw today. What PL side will Pool draw? They've had Everton and Wolves twice in the last few years, so they are probably due Utd, or City. Away, obviously.
A tually, City always get a cushy home draw, so they'll get a non league side at the Etihad.
