Premier League 2012/13 Discussion Thread

I think he's the worst negotiator the world has ever seen. Well, since Peter Ridsdale signed Seth Johnson for Leeds!

Rumours of man utd selling rooney. I've never really rated him and if someone is daft enough to pay £35 million + I'd say that's a good deal for Manure.

How can Arsenal be going backwards? our best seaon finish for a while last year with some decent signings so far.

Villa's problems started way before McLeish with the excessive wages and signings from the O'Neil era. Not blaming O'Neil but Villa couldn't afford it.

Interesting to see Redknapp wants back asap. Wonder which club he'll take to virtual bankruptcy this time?

Arsenal have gone backwards because for years they were one of the top two teams in the league. Whilst all the teams around them have moved foward, we have stood still. I love the fact that we have a great traditional, well run club, but sentiment doesn't win you trophies or entice the top talent. I understand what you say about Liverpool wasting money, but at least it shows intent. If you were a top player in europe, why would go to Arsenal knowing they're selling their best players?
Yes, we've done more business this transfer window than previous years, but look at who we have against who we've lost. Even going back only a few years, we let the likes of Flamini and Hleb go, because we didn't think they were good enough, even Gilberto and Edu. Those players would look like world beaters against this current team. When you sell players like Van Persie and Fabregas, and replace them with who we have, thats going backwards in my book.

Yeah i would say Arsenal have more stood still for years rather than gone backwards. You've consistently been a top 4 team for more than a decade which you can only say for 1 other team in the league. Granted the almighty Spurs have gone forward after years and years and years and years and years of being average (until Martin Jol got us a 5th place finish we'd never finished higher than 7th or lower than 15th in the premier league despite being one of the 7 teams to have always been in the premier league). But you have to remember teams like Liverpool and altho it seems like they may be through the worst of it, Chelsea have been going backwards for at least the last 3 years. So really, apart from never winning anything, things aren't really that bad at arsenal. It's just the fact that you used to be league Champions and the fans still expect that which in my opinion is an expectation too far. I don't see you winning it again for the foreseeable future. I doubt this decade at least.

And what have any of those players done since? Even strong rumours Flamini wants back.

7years ago Man City weren't there and we can't compete with that.

However walcott has refused the 85k offered wanting 100k so that looks like another gone. Not sure how I feel about Usmanov buying more shares and only being 140ish short now of a 30% stake. That guy is seriously rich.

I know things aren't a disaster at Arsenal, all i'm saying is that a little intent goes a long way. We just need to be little braver and Wenger not so pig headed. Over the last couple of seasons, how close have Arsenal been to signing Hazard, Mata, and now Sahin. These players could all be at the Emirates now if we weren't so bullish about wanting the last say in the deal.
I'm fed up of standing still as Gooner. I want to feel the exitement I felt when Rioch signed Bergkamp again.
By the way Pete, I hope i'm wrong, but Spurs are about to go through the same thing we have/are.
Now Modric has gone, say bye bye to Bale and co.

Yeah well Modric has wanted out for a while and i'm glad he's gone. The money can be better spent. We were very unlucky not to be in the Champions league this season. We earn't the right and should be there. That alone is the only reason we may, i thought, lose some of our big players but it seems, for now, they are all staying.

I understand the frustration but when Lille? Eventually decided to sell Hazard more clubs were tracking him and he was a better player. He also became more arrogant and made his enormous wage demands known very early on.
Mata was almost a done deal again until Chelski offered daft wages for him.
Sahinwanted to come to Arsenal but RM would only allow a loan move for 12 months. Why should arsenal do this? It's a situation where if he was crap he would contribute nothing. If he was good RM would keep him or drive up his transfer value.

Agree with Spurs though Bale won't be there for long.

I think you're looking at the Sahin loan deal back to front. At the the moment Arsenal cant afford to be arrogant. If he was shite, we could give him back, if he was great, he may contribute to winning something.
BTW, we should have Mata in the bag long before Chelsea started sniffing around. Time will tell, we may end up winnig the lot

It'll be interesting to see how Spurs cope with Modric. I know they signed Sigurdsen, but the two are different players. If anything Sigurdsen would be a replacement for VDV.

I agree with Pete, I can't see anyone beyond the two Mmanchester sides and possibly Chelsea, dependent on how much Abramovic wants to spend, putting in a concerted title challenge. And by "concerted title challenge", I mean still being involved with a handful of games left, not finishing 3rd but 20 pts off the pace.

I see they have dembele now. Very different midfield without modric. I will expect them to be much more direct. Play a bit like man u. Balls wide to lennon and bale then fill the box with the likes of dembele and sigurdsson. Cant see them keeping the ball as well as last year

I like Sigurdssen. He was excellent at Swansea last year. I'm really not bothered about Modric leaving. I don't think any Spurs fans are. I think he's rated higher outside the walls of those who watch him every week. I don't think we'll miss his 3 goals a season and Bale, VDV, Lennon, Sigurdssen and PArker can all keep the ball pretty well.
If we get this Willian fella too then we are actually starting to look like a stronger outfit than last season. We still need a centre back and another striker tho.

Agred that Sigurdsen is a class act. Gutted he chose you lot over Pool.
I think Dembele is quality as well, £15 million could prove to be a real bargain as well (assuming anyone can ever really be 'worth' £15 million)!

BTW, Can anyone tell me where the feck Modric fits in that Real Madrid team?

They have Diarra, Alonso, Khedira, Ozil, Di Maria and Ball bag (you know who I mean). As well as Granero, Callejon and Kaka! Ok, Kaka has as much chance of playing as I have of getting hands on Pippa Middleton's ass, but even so, that's some serious talent for Modric to try and displace.

Couldnt agree more Weas.

Not sure about Demebele myself too. Dont rate him :?

This is the Problem with Madrid and Barca. At the end of the day their is only 11 places on that pitch at any one time!

Anyone seen the Champion League Groups?

Group A: Porto, Dynamo Kiev, Paris St Germain, Dinamo Zagreb

Group B: Arsenal, Schalke, Olympiakos, Montpellier

Group C: AC Milan, Zenit St Petersburg, Anderlecht, Malaga

Group D: Real Madrid, Manchester City, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund

Group E: Chelsea, Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus, FC Nordsjaelland

Group F: Bayern Munich, Valencia, Lille, BATE Borisov

Group G: Barcelona, Benfica, Spartak Moscow, Celtic

Group H: Manchester United, Braga, Galatasaray, CFR Cluj

Hopefully we make a better job of ours than last season

Chelsea and Citys group look tricky :|

That's going to be a real test for City. If they get through that then they deserve the credit. However, fighting for 4 competitions at the same time is very tough.
