latest film/ dvd you have seen

Victoria & Abdul

no idea why I took so long to watch this one... especially as it was filmed in (large) part at Osborne House; an English Heritage (my employer) property... anyway, I digress.

Simply a brilliant film!
Well filmed, outstanding writing, acting that puts most to shame in the current era (Dench, Izzard and Fazal are amazing) the supporting actors are all excellent too... really is no weakness to any performances at all. There is history, humour, sadness and unfortunately real horror behind this interpretation of this 'true story' too.

It sounds great, and Judy Dench is always worth watching, so I will have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up.

'Touching the void' a tale of ill prepared climbing friends. Very poor preparation for that expedition. But it's also a tale of human endurance against the odds. I could understand the pull of that climb.

Thor - Ragnarok

I know I'm terribly late to the party on this one, but broadly speaking Marvel movies do little for me. I was though encouraged by the wife to sit and watch it as my Son had seen it an really enjoyed it.
Started ok, I actually commented on how clever it was that the backdrops actually look illustrated in (possibly due to their colourization), I found the middle was forgettable and the end an utter joke. Not a lot more I can say really. I'm certainly not going to get into a load of detailed reasons why it turned me off and doesn't work etc. I know folk really like them, they just don't suit my taste I guess and having never read the comics, I have no affinity to the characters or stories.
I have to therefore stand by my notion that all Marvel films to date have been poor at best with the exception of GotG that I actually really enjoyed from start to finish.

Whenever the infinity one is on Sky, I'll still watch it of course... just in case

TOPGUN

Decided to have a reset last night and watch a movie I knew I loved. Simply some of the best photography in any film ever for me... Tony Scott in the hot seat pulled together a whole new appreciation for dogfighting in 'modern' planes with the way he shot this.
Despite the massive plot issue when they've won one real life dogfight against the old enemy of mother Russia and Maverick is immeadiately (as one of the best in the entire USAF) given the option of retirement to become a teacher! It's a bloody good film.
My 14 year old daughter sat and watched it with me and loved it too, so it's not just sentimental eyes either...

Not to mention firing the same missile 3 times

That and one minute the F-14s don't have fuel tanks, then they do, then they don't again lol

Incredibles 2

9/10 Brilliant film

Technically a better written film than the first, with lots of topical subjects being included (to please the snowflakes and politically correct :D ), but like Star Wars, with ESB being technically the better film, I still prefer the original, as you can't beat an origin film, and it perfectly stands on it's on. Only let down was it was bloody obvious from early on who the villain was. Syndrome was a much better villain.

THE MEG

Actually saw thi on opening day, but neglected to update the thread.

It's exactly what you would expect... trashy, silly, slightly above average special effects and the obligatory lady pleaser of having the lead take his top off a few times.

That said, I actually really enjoyed it, said to myself in my head 'they're gonna need a bigger boat' and even jumped at ONE bit too. If you want something with a flawless plot, don't watch this (or actually any film of recent release), if you want the nostalgia of Jaws, don't watch this, if you can for 2 hours not take the world too seriously and let the guns and harpoons and massively oversized prehistoric Megaladon CGI wash over you, you'll probably have a good time too.

The matrix (1999)

i wondered out of interest if the effects looked dated after nearly 20 years....

to my suprise it still looks awesome which is a testament to the film makers

solid 8/10 still

Loved this film, remember going to see it with my mate when it first come out and neither of us had no idea whatsoever that it was a sci-fi film, we were fully expecting nothing more than a 'cool action film' but as soon as I realised wtf was going on after they 'woke' Neo up I was completely blown away throughout the entire film, didn't want it to end.

It's the only time iv'e ever been to a cinema and been genuinely amazed, it was like my own 1977 Star wars moment that I never got to experience being born too late.

Yes I watched this on Thursday, to my surprise I enjoyed it! It's no Jaws but it's also not as ridiculous as Sharknado etc so if you like disaster/shark movies, worth a watch!

Another blast from the past...
Watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind- Directors cut on Blu-ray last night, really enjoyed it.
I haven't seen this in years, the story has many holes, but if you look though those it's an enjoyable 2 1/4 hours.
I'm not sure that it's stood the rest of time as well as SW, but it transported me back to the 70's as soon as it started, great nostalgia.
Recommend to anyone that has not seen it for a few years.

The Greasy Strangler on Film 4 the other night, something a bit different
