Rooney is still Englands best player.

Have you watched England or Utd this year?

I never saw him being carted off for having tired legs in the past tournaments despite perhaps a lack of stand out performances. He's had a quiet season due to being injured or Man Utd being shite and boring.

Yeah, he didn't get carted off then, cos he was younger and hadn't slipped so far from his peak as he has now. He's had a quiet season? He's been utter shite! Utd played their "best" football of the season when he was injured. He is one of the main reasons why Utd are so poor, he slows everything down and seems to have adopted Stevie G's liking for raking long balls to no one.

Ohh and you'd start him up front with Vardy ahead of the guy who won the golden boot this year? You know, the guy who scored more goals than both of them, and is English!?

Rooney was class last night and should probably be in the squad, but Bournemouth were on holiday and its the best I've seen him play for about 3 years. Those performances are phew and far between, their is no way he should start ahead of Kane or Vardy.

In fact I would pick Rashford infront of him!

Agreed. He did play well, but it was effectively a friendly. Neither side really gave a ****. Both were safe, Utd were never gonna win 19-0 and no one wanted to get injured and miss the cup final. So, you can't really judge him on that. Rashford has looked quality though. Here's hoping he follows in the footsteps of Bebe and Marcheda

I would. Rooneys only 30 and a better player and don't think Vardy and Kane would suit playing together. Vardy would fit better into my system and has more experience and goals per minute than Kane anyway.

Each to their own I guess, I can see your point on Rooney and he may only be 30 but physically Giggs is probably still more agile than Rooney.

He gives the ball away to easily for me and in the Euros like the CL it's where England will fall short. Loosing the ball against Spain and then not getting it back for 30 minutes.

Like I said you have a point and he probably will start, only because he has naked photos of Roy Hodgson.

Lol, i don't think we're gonna agree in this one. I do think he'll start though.Woy is very predictable

Come on lads.. you know the routine. They'll get through the group stage and as soon as they come up against Holland or Italy or Spain or France they'll fall apart. Seen it all before, they don't play together enough to gel as a team. You've got to take Rooney, he may not be as good as he used to be but every now and then you get a little bit of magic, he can create goals.

I think Rooney has to go, his experience alone for those youngsters will be worth it, he is still a good player and wears his heart on his sleeve, wouldnt be guaranteed a start for me unless roy sees something in training

Well, that sucks.

England deserved the win for sure. My son and I were on our feet after the first goal. Beautiful free kick. When it got to stoppage, I was nervous, but confidant. Then Russia scored a pretty ugly goal. Goddamn defensive breakdown. :(

We settle for a tie in a game we should have won. Oh well, at least Russia was the toughest opponent. Not to take Wales and Slovakia lightly, but they should be easier.

Good on Rooney for that marvelous shot that was only a non-goal due to an even more marvelous save by the Russian goalkeeper. If only it went in - we'd have 3 points and not 1. :(

Oddsmakers over here still have England in 4th place to win it all, behind only Germany, France, and Spain.

Ian

I guess that's the downside of having half the team made up of Spurs players, a large dose of that famous Spurs bad luck  I thought England played well and were unlucky not to win despite the bizarre line up (Stirling and Lallana starting!?) but it does put the pressure on the next game, draw or lose to Wales on Thursday and it's all over.

That was as good a performance as anything I've seen in a tournament since'96. Passion, heart and a little unlucky. **** the Golden Generation - keep it up lads and we'll do ok.

I've already got people on Facebook moaning that it's same old England and they're not watching any more.

I thought we were really unlucky and the starting 11 was spot on. Roy shouldn't have taken off Rooney and played for 1-0 though. And why the hell is Kane taking corners?

We're really weak defensively and Wales will give us a harder time than Russia.

Yes, I am wondering why all the doom and gloom - a draw wasn't a fair result as we bossed most of the game but there things happen - I didn't seen anything in the Wales game to scare us and I think if we play like we did then we should pick up 4 points or even 6 from those two games

Would have liked to have seen Vardy come on and give us an attacking outlet but it is so easy to shore up the defense and it damn well nearly worked

Ehhh, not exactly mate! Russia are the weakest team in your group. They lost 2-3 of their better players before the tournament started and looked distinctly mediocre.
Wales is basically a derby game,so form/skill goes out the window.
Slovakia beat a wee country called Germany last week. They are a good side!

England played really well. Best side I've seen so far (cos Norn Iron aint played yet). The equaliser was unfortunate, pretty much the definition of daylight robbery. Russia deserved nothing from that game. Not sure why Sterling strated, I assume cos he has pace and Russia ehhh don't, but he was piss poor all night. Ran down blind alleys, his crossing was woeful and his general decision making was poor. He still doesn't look a £50 million player. I thought Lallana did well in the first half, but he struggled in second half.

I agree with Ian, Vardy should have come on with 10-15 to go. His energy alone would have put that Russian backline under all sorts of pressure.

Disappointing result for England but promising performance.

Ps, superb result for Wales!

Good performance, lots of positives, the late goal conceded is just how it goes at this level.

Liked to have seen 20 minutes or so of Vardy running behind the old codgers, and should have kept Rooney on.

Rooney bashing was answered with a great game from him, get behind the Team, this is England not the Premier league, leave tribal football aside and support the lads

I'm a Utd Fan, but lallana was great in my eyes :D

Come on England

you've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line
They'll always hit you and hurt you
Defend and attack
There's only one way to beat them
Get round the back
Catch me if you can
Cos' I'm the England man
And what you're looking at
Is the master plan
We ain't no hooligans
This ain't a football song
Three lions on my chest
I know we can't go wrong

Yep, Russia are definitely the weakest in the group - the majority of them are past it and looked absolutely knackered after 45 minutes, never mind 90. Wales haven't done anything since they qualified but they'll be massively up for Wednesday. Bale against our defence makes me really nervous, so we need to be ruthless when finishing and adopt the "we're gonna score 1 more than you" Keegan mentality.

Fantastic performance last night though.

I'm not English, can I still slag!? Lol
One decent game doesn't prove anyone right. Or wrong. He did ok, but I still don't think he should be in the squad, never mind shoe horned into the team.

I don't think his substitution cost England. It was a goal from FA and Roy was trying to manage the game, and probably Rooney's game time. He did look bucked when he came off. I'd say it was sensible enough, and just unfortunate that they scored. Had rooney been on he wudnt have been marking the boy who scored so it didn't make any direct difference.

Everyone has a right to an opinion, so slag away

I just think Rooney brings experience, and still has the class to have a moment of magic that can change a game. His " get back and defend" part of the game is still there as was shown last night, the international experience he brings to the game for the young lads in the dressing room is priceless for any team, he has a football brain and will switch play with cross field passes, with Vardy running round the back could prove a massive bonus. So on balance with all the things he brings to the field I would rather have him playing than not, that's for certain.

Bring on the next game on Thursday, build on the positives and play as a team let's see where it takes us.....

Sing for England, our souls to bare,
Take the knocks, do we care?
Play with passion, guile and grace,
No matter the team that we may face,
Never surrender each game we chase
We are England, TO DREAM WE DARE !!!

Kane was **** and Rooney was man of the match as predicted. :D

It was a great performance all round though and am confident going into the next games. Should have stayed positive and gone for a 2nd goal rather than trying to hold on against a side who had barely made a chance all game. :(
