My lad just got me True Detective series on DVD

I must say it was awesome, the MM was superb, hopefully they make a second series
Great watch 8)

A second series has been made and will air in the summer! :D

Completely different cast/story. Colin Farell, Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams starring. Hope it lives up to expectations!

I watched Fargo the series which was ****ing brilliant. One of the best i've ever seen. It's a 10 episode 'miniseries' and every moment is story driven. No filler. It's brilliantly written, very well acted; especially by the 2 leads: B. B. Thornton and Martin Freeman and the direction, editing and use of soundtrack is, at times, sublime. Can't wait for series 2!

Hannibal seasons 1 and 2 which has it's moments but not amazing. It's worth watching for Mads Mickelson. The guy who plays Will Graham is a snivelling douche and mis-cast.

Watched a new series called Silicon Valley which is excellent. Very funny but smartly written too and cohesive. Highly recommend this one. 8)

Now currently watching Orange is the New Black and Talking… sorry, Walking Dead. Late the the party with WD and not particularly impressed. Dire writing, poor acting, unimaginative directing and way too much filler. People talking about boring **** that really doesn't matter. It's watchable and has it's moments but mainly just trash TV. Sorry. :? Orange is the New Black on the other hand is very good.

Just a point on the walking dead. The comic which its adapted from, isn't about zombie action. It's purely about the development or journey of the character which uses the zombie background as the enabler of that. The zombie action is the filler and the showpiece. Thus why every episode it features a new innovative way to show a death. The best examples of this are shown through Rick (responsible cop, moralistic but distant family man in his wife's eyes, now prepared to rip a guys throat out with his teeth to save his son being raped. Carol, beaten abused wife living in fear, now Rambo and prepared to shoot children if it means survival. Daryl living in an abusive situation with his bully brother with little care for anyone else now a leader but emotionally stunted.. More to come there). Some of the characters come and go quickly, but others like the 'latest death' run their course and if they don't adapt to the surroundings they will die. Whilst it's not by any means a perfect series it wouldn't survive itself if it was action scene after action scene. For comic fans there's a lot of foreshadowing to a certain character coming up. The comic wouldn't have survived over a decade if it was just people being eaten and gore.

I'm gonna stick with it because it has it's moments and i'm interested to see where it goes. Though, just to be clear, i wasn't suggesting or complaining on any level that it lacks Zombie action or action. I have the intellect and patience to watch a show of any pace as long as what i'm watching has some point to it and is made with some skill and craft. A clever script and well written dialogue is why i loved The Wire, The West Wing or The Sopranos. WD has none of the things that make a tv show great in my opinion. But i'm told it improves so i'm keeping as open a mind as i can.

Just started on Helix season 2, so far so good.
Better call Saul is okay but a bit boring in places (no where near as good as BB)
Fortitude, yep it's pretty good

I need something to watch - done Breaking Bad and Walking Dead and not ready to start a Game of Thrones marathon yet - I've heard of Fortitude is it the Norwegian one - bit like The Bridge. ?

Yes but better IMHO
If you liked breaking bad you'll sit through 'better call Saul'
Anyway you should be the one giving us the heads up on TV shows

Haha - true - over 300 cable channels and yet all I watch each week is walking dead on a Sunday and Better Call Saul on a Monday

I liked the Bridge - probably the first non-English speaking show I have ever watched from start to finish - so will have to check out Fortitude

Fargo is one of the best TV series ever made. It's just a short 10 episode 1 season, 1 story job but brilliant. 5/5

Other tv series i've watched recently and what i'd give them out of 5:

Orange Is The New Black - 3.5 Entertaining and addictive but simplistic, shallow and hugely overrated.
Hannibal 3.5 - Gets much better as it goes along. But massively suspend disbelief for this far fetched series.
Homeland 3.5 - Again, very entertaining and exciting but ridiculous logic and annoying characters. Bare in mind i'm harsh. It's a good show. Bit like 24.
Silicon Valley 4.5 - This one's a comedy. Only 8 half hour episodes but it's pure joy and story driven rather than separate "sit-com" scenarios for every episode. This one has one story and it's brilliant. Very funny and brilliantly written.

Some of the better past shows:
The Wire 5/5 - Rewatched all 5 seasons late last year. Still up there as one of the best 3 or 4 shows ever made.
Dexter 4/5 (Season 1-3) then 3-3.5. - Excellent, high tension viewing. Loses it's way slightly in the last couple of season but still overall a great show.
Sopranos 5/5 - No words should be needed. Last 2 seasons are nowhere near as good as the earlier ones but still.
Breaking Bad - 4.5/5 - Brilliant show. Only thing that slightly lets it down is it's myriad of annoying characters.
Boardwalk Empire 4/5 for the first 3 seasons. Massively loses it's way after that. Real shame. Essential viewing tho.
Deadwood 4.5/5 - What an incredible show this was. The only devastating shame of it is that it was during the writers strike and was canceled because of it, mid story, after season 3. So it's horrible to put in the time to have it left hanging. One of the great tragedies of TV.

Cheers Pete - lots for me to go at there

I thought Breaking Bad was very poor. Nowhere near the hype.

I'm watching prison break which is good but getting......really?
Sons of Anarchy has improved after a dull season or so.

I suppose this is the best place to ask seeing I don't want to read the Walking Dead thread in case there are spoilers. Does the Walking Dead improve in series four?

Series one was brilliant. Series two dragged a bit. Series three (with the Governor) just seemed to drag on forever. I've watched the first and possibly second episodes of series four but don't feel any need to see any more. It seems to be going off on tangents that bore the **** outta me. Does it revert to type or is more long winded boring guff, ie like series 2. I have series four sky +'ed an I think I have most of series 5, but I'm half minded to delete them.

I've got as far as they are still in the prison and are integrating the people from the town.

That's weird because i thought Walking Dead was piss poor for the first 2 seasons. I mean, almost literally nothing happens. Nothing but talking and the characters really annoyed me. If i had to listen to Nick arguing with his boring wife and/or super annoying sulky former partner for another series i think i would have stopped watching.
I thought series 3 was fantastic. Good story. Much faster moving and intense. Not to mention getting rid of a couple of the most annoying characters. The writers clearly had a breakthrough and realised, hey, if all we have is zombies as the bad guys, this show is gonna be very repetitive. The governor was a fantastic character and well needed.
Series 4 was excellent too. They change tact completely and it's a very different series, which was needed. And series 5 is good too but i'd say 3 and 4 were the best by far.

Just starting in on Daredevil on Netflix, really enjoying the tone and treatment. I of gain find the character preachy and sanctimonious when written but none of that comes out on screen, really good and a really shift from agents of shield, even though both are part of the same universe.
