Hello all

I've had a couple of messages about my signature now, a line from Handmade Films' Withnail & I. This made me wonder how many other Withnailites we have on here?

There is a definite hardcore community of Withnail fans out there and it's my mission to convert as many normal people as possible. If you've never heard of the film then you must watch it now! Starring Richard E.Grant (Withnail) and Paul McGann (I/Marwood) as a pair of out of work actors at the end of the 60's. The pair embark on a massive bender ending up in the Lake District in order to get away from the hideous depression of the city. They are unexpectedly joined by Withnail's homosexual uncle, Montigue Withnail (Richard Griffiths) who has formed a less than healthy obsession on Marwood.

Withnail & I is one of those films to watch before you die, or at least while you're alive :? It's highly quotable and brilliant script by Bruce Robinson is legendary on it's own even without Grant's unbelievable performance. I have never heard anyone say that they didn't like this film. Forget everything else, this is what it's all about ...except SW

Aha! I've been waiting for this... good call, dear fellow

Withnail and I is one of my favourites, too. Not a day goes by it seems where a quote from that classic is useable in daily life. You might get the odd look or a raised eyebrow from those who don't get it, but I've become accustomed to that over the years... :D

"Look at this: accident blackspot? These aren't accidents, they're throwing themselves into the road! Throwing themselves into the road gladly to escape all this hideousness. [Heckles pedestrian] Throw yourself into the road, darling, YOU HAVEN'T GOT A CHANCE!"

Martin

It's a sickness :P Always makes me want to drink red wine. Just as well it doesn't make me want to drink lighter fluid as well! :?

As a youth i used to weep in butchers' shops

I've watched Withnail countless times but I never tire of its charm. The script is outstanding and performances excellent. I reckon it's up there with the greatest comedy movies such as Spinal Tap, Life of Brian ...
Just took a quick look at Time Outs' top 100 comedy films, wich puts Withnail at a lofty 7th!

Definately hugely quotable, - 'here comes another ****er', 'tanks!', 'here hare here'.

I loved the film from the first time I saw it, such a classic, and highly recommended to all.

Definitely up there with Life of Brian and not surprising - both produced by Handmade Films. Spinal Tap is great but not in the same league ...that's how good W&I is!

For those who haven't seen it and are going to (you really must) expect something different to the norm. It's not all fast paced, slapstick gags but a masterpiece portrayal about the end of an era ..."they're selling hippy wigs in Woolworths, man.. "

w&i is a classic its in my top 20! Infact it inspired me to play guitar after hearing hendrixs allalong the watchtower in it

Some choice lines there lads. I quote from Withnail in daily life with startling frequency. Such as -
'here comes another ****er!', whilst driving or 'I demand to have some booze!' after a days graft.

Perhaps a classic comedy thread is in order?

Yeh maybe :D I could quote Withnail and The Young Ones all day long.

"Accident Blackspot!? These aren't accidents! They're throwing themselves into the road gladly to escape all this hideousness! Throw yourself into the road darling, you haven't got a chance!!"

We've gone on holiday by accident.

Good call for The Young Ones. First programme I was allowed to stay up late to watch. Put them all on a while ago as I got given the box set by an old school friend, and we still quote it loads. 'Morning, completely brilliant!', 'Richard sugar-flavoured-snot Briars', 'this is my new band Radical Posture' etc.

I know mate. Very sad. He was in so many things. Saw an episode of Minder recently that Richard was in. Played a Monty type character. Have i got this right or has Ralph Brown died? I hope not

That's a great episode of Minder (big fan of the originals :D ) Did you ever see him in Pie in the Sky? I used to watch that in the early 90s. Like you said he was in loads of stuff.

Ralph Brown still going strong mate :D

I only saw a bit of Pie In The Sky. He's a fine actor who i would compare with David Suchet or Jeremy Brett. He plays the eccentric part very well. That episode of Minder is one of the best. There are only a few that stick in mind; one where there's a blonde singer who is daft and Terry is minding a band; the one with the Aussie bird in it, and another where there's an Indian bird who has a white boyfriend and the family don't like it. And then there's the episode with Richard Griffiths as the drunken musician.

Always got time for an episode of Minder 8)
