Withnail & I Fans

Oh and i forgot to mention that in the opening credits there's an Mk2 Escort X-pack in the background. I drive one daily. The body kit is nicknamed the 'Minder' kit 8)

In the words of Lux Interior: "You got good taste". Good to hear of another classic car enthusiast who uses his motor daily. None of this 'I only drive it on sunny days' for me. And apologies for talking off topic in the off topic section

These threads can go anywhere

Years ago used to be a mechanic. That's when i bought the Escort, probably about 13 years ago now. Since then it's been rebuilt and rebuilt ...That's the only problem using them everyday - they rot  Lucky i know how to do the work :)

For me Minder along with Auf Auf Wiedersehen, Pet where the best comedy dramas ever made.

Great episodes you picked out there Barry :D
Hear, hear- couldn't agree more, Andy.

Briefly, back to the cars, Barry (I'll bring it back around to Withnail, I promise)... I'm 18 months into my Morris Minor ownership (stop smirking  )... what I can't do bodywork-wise myself, then I've a mate who lives a couple of streets away who can sort the rest. A small price to pay for having a smile on your face every day as soon as I hop in the driving seat. I had the old girl up to 62mph the other day on the motorway- life in the fast lane. That little 948cc engine returns a mind blowing 37 bhp  but I do love her so.

Which brings me back to Uncle Monty: here's a clip where the boys call on the old chap to borrow his classic Jag and the cottage in the Dales. Mike, if you haven't had chance to see this in its entirety yet, then you really should make amends

RIP Mr Griffiths, a great British ac-tor, and will be very much missed.

Moggie Minor  Nice quirky motor and they always smell ace inside. You don't get that smell with modern cars :D

The Jag scene is ace. It always baffled me how they managed to get all that way in such a piece of **** - "I can assure you officer, I've only had a few ales". Run those lines through your head without them sounding like a drunken Withnail

Any chance of a pic of your escort?

My moggy not street enough? It's got 'flicky-out' trafficators  Only joking, pal!

Barry, that's one sweet motor. Love it, mate. And it fills me with joy that you drive it every day- it should be seen out and about on a daily basis, that's for certain.

Amazing snaps from Crow Crag- superb. I hope you muttered a 'Hare. Here. Hare, here?' amongst others upon your arrival. I'm inspired... I've got to go see it for myself :D

Cheers. There's a Moggy specialist near me in Chorley. They could bore you to death with Moggie talk. lol. Not sure how you make one 'street' but have seen some with nice modded motors - Rover 16v etc.

Crow Crag has been undergoing restoration for some time but i believe the owner is receptive of fans. Well worth a trip up there. Directions, contacts can be found on withnailandiforum.com

When i went there was a plaque on the door saying 'here hair here'. Quality :D

Just got in from playing a gig at Proud in Camden, coincidentally we ended up attending the launch of the Withnail and Me exhibition at the same place. Some stunning photos on display and well worth a visit if you get the chance!!

nice one 8) Used to live in Crouch End before i moved back up north. Would have loved to go to that exhibition.

...and the circle is complete. I'm off to Crouch End next weekend to catch up with an old pal, who first showed me Withnail and I.

'I'm not from London you know!'

Check out where i'm going on the 04th of July :D

There's only one ticket left for the Friday and Saturday showing. I booked two for me and the wife. Looks brilliant! 'camping is compulsory' :)

Thoroughly envious, Barry. One to think about for next year...

Have a smashing time of it, and post up some pics on your return. Don't forget the plastic bags to pop on over your shoes.

I bet nobody thinks to bring plastic bags for their feet!

.... actually I bet its a field full of people with plastic bags for wellingtons. Lol

I can't wait. :D

Hmm ...this event turned out to be a bit of a nightmare

Throughout the week the weather forecast hadn't been great - rain, heavy rain, clearing up by 9pm. But having paid up front we were always going to chance it...

Driving up to Shap on the M6 the sky was beyond the point of 'beginning to bruise'. If you've ever driven through the hills and thought to yourself 'are we actually in the clouds'? - it was like that. Worrying.

Off the motorway at junction 39 the Picnic Cinema people had placed signs along the way making Wet Sleddale easy enough to find. Roads here are just single track lanes leading to farms or wherever. We arrive at a farm house and park up. Quite a few soaked looking Withnail fans are trudging off to the camp site which, it turns out, is on the side of a fairly steep hill overlooking Wet Sleddale reservoir. Just beyond that is Sleddale Hall itself, aka Crow Crag from the film.

Almost instantly i'm thinking 'this is a mistake I tell you - a dreadful mistake'. In fact, given the grim situation, a great many lines from the film came to mind, not least of which, 'we've gone on holiday by mistake!'

Looking on the outside world from our soggy tent another line comes to mind - 'there's nothing out there except a hurricane'. In all seriousness I was thinking how can we possibly go and enjoy an outdoor screening of Withnail & I in this torrential downpour? To anyone who has actually seen the film, imagine the scene where Withnail and Marwood arrive at Crow Crag in the decrepit Jag. It really was like that. The irony was not lost on me.

So my wife and I trudged up a very steep hill to the Hall where the screening is planned in the outdoor yard. The is the location of so many memorable scenes. A magical place to fans of the film. There's a girl at the top of the hill next to a stile. We have tickets paid for in advance that cover entertainment, screening, camping and a bite to eat. I flash back to these tickets ...left in the glovebox.

Funnily enough it was at this point that the fight to stay and enjoy our night away was lost. Honestly we were soaked. You know when your waterproofs have come to the limit of how much water they can repel. It was like that.

Leaving really bothered me as I am a massive W&I fan. This was my second visit to Wet Sleddale and i had been looking forward to it for months. So disappointed, and actually disappointed in myself for not sticking it out. The wife would have stayed had I not said anything. She's good like that.

Apparently people still had a good time, although I fail to see how. I really must be old and boring.
