Upcoming Vectis auction/toy shop find

Will ask Kathy to take pics of the Death Star box when it is opened.

The shipping case with 12 backs isn't sealed. It may not have the original contents in it and may just be whatever 12 backs the rep could get his hands on. Will check with Kathy on that. If it's an undisturbed box, then I'll ask for photos.

cheers Jason

Kathy will get pics when the Death Star case is opened.

The 12 back shipping case was sealed, but was opened by the seller before Vectis was involved. So the contents are an accurate breakdown of what was in the case. Have asked Kathy for that breakdown.

Jason,

Well done matey. Then IMO it is the most important Palitoy find for many many years if not ever bearing in mind they're now over 36 years old.

Do you think they'll release the pictures before the sale?

Cheers

Andy

I think someone will try to buy both cases in their entirety, then off to AFA they will go one by one. However much the value of a full case is, surely someone is eyeing this as a money spinner. The profit to be made either way will attract a few. If Vectis receive an offer of say, £125,000 for the Star Wars items alone, im pretty sure their client would be interested.

I sure hope they are all sold per lot, but maybe they may go to one owner??

Wouldnt it be ironic if there were several Luke,Chewbacca and Large Han in this case...maybe even a VCJ.

Just had a thought, but has it been said the cases are being split?? Surely, these will command more as they are the first complete Palitoy SW series toys to be discovered? And is it better to leave them as is??

I think Jason said earlier in the thread they would be sold separately and no VCJ. Can't see many people willing to part with £100k plus.

Vectis plan to sell the 12 backs and case separately I believe. I have no idea as to contents yet. Kathy can not confirm contents until their preceding sales of 12 backs have been completed.

Cheers Jason

Thanks chaps.

Andy, ya never know mate. We used to think we would never see someone spend over £20,000 on a single figure but it happened. As a business opportunity it does look appealing.

Agreed, though I think Vectis won't put all their eggs in one basket. They want the steady stream of figures to perpetuate the idea that they're the place to buy and sell Star Wars figures.

So given we won't know for a while, let's speculate on the contents of the box.

I think we can have a pretty accurate guess as the contents.

The case won't contain 4 of each figure for a total of 4 sets. Some figures were more popular than others, some were meant to be bought in multiples like stormtrooper, jawa and sand people. We know from surviving MOCs that the rarity order is rougly:-

1 Luke
2 Ben
3 Chewbacca
4 Leia
5 Han (Pin Head)
6 Vader
7 Deathsquad commander
8 Stormtrooper
9 R2D2
10 Sandpeople
11 Jawa
12 C3P0

That was from Gary in 2003:-

Here's the AFA totals for those 12 backs:-

10 Luke
8 Ben
7 Chewbacca
13 Leia
6 Han (Large Head)
10 Han (Pin Head)
19 Vader
19 Deathsquad commander
21 Stormtrooper
16 R2D2
26 Sandpeople
9 Jawa (Cloth Cape)
1 Jawa (Vinyl Cape)
20 C3P0
185 Total

In term of variations any Hans are likely to be either all large or all pin head. I'm guessing they will all be pin head.
I'm also guessing all the Jawas will be cloth cape.

In terms of a breakdown, I'm going with the AFA ratios, so that would comprise a box containing:-

3 Luke
2 Ben
2 Chewbacca
3 Leia
4 Han (Pin Head)
5 Vader
5 Deathsquad commander
5 Stormtrooper
4 R2D2
7 Sandpeople
3 Jawa (Cloth Cape)
5 C3P0

What's anyone else guess then?

:)

It's an interesting thing to speculate about and I guess we all have a dream box contents in mind.
Working in retail (forever) in some shape or form, my experience of a sales reps samples set would likely be one of maybe three options:

A) It could be a collection of just the best selling lines for a quick win for him/her and their customers and in turn to deliver a repeat order.
B) It could be a bulk quantity of slower sellers that needed shifting by the supplier.
C) It could be a mixture of all (as Jason suggests) to give an example of each figure (personally I find this the least likely option).

Sample sets are usually issued free of charge by the company in order to make the sales (although some modern practices are starting to charge for them as part of a salary reduction etc) as they want the rep to sell as much as possible...

Another way of looking at it (especially given the box of six Death Stars) is that it was not so much a rep sample/sales set, but actual stock that a salesman would have delivered at the point of selling them. Only issue I have with that theory is why it would have been kept and not sold. If the salesman had the stock he would have most likely only had it because he bought it (as part of his contract) and therefore would want to sell it in order to make the cash back, or it was an order that he had already received and was paid for by the customer, so it would need delivering, not keeping.

Could the Death Stars be an early POS option that the Rep would issue for free as an incentive or with a large order for the stores to display the figures on???

Andy, that's a beautiful example. I didn't know that the silver sticker was presented 'cut to shape' like that. I cant think of another sticker sheet in the whole vintage line that is presented in that way without any border on the backing sheet. Also, I was of the belief that the square tabs in the cardboard (that the edge clips would clip into) were 'punched' by the owner when constructing the Death Star for the first time. However your example they are clearly already punched, am I wrong about this?

Thanks, wish I still had it though.

I'd not thought about it too much but I think you're correct they were already punched. I can't even remember where the silver sticker goes on the set??

I'd have thought the numbers of each would be even because they'd be packed in pairs. The ROTJ cases were always packed in pairs, but I suppose they had some different bubble sizes, GG for example.

Interesting that Vecits won't disclose the contents yet because they don't want to damage forthcoming 12 back auctions. That means there are more 12 backs being auctioned before May/June? Nice :D

As to rarity, is the current thinking that Chewbacca is now more rare than Ben? Recent prices certainly seem to bear this out.

I thought they were all 12 backs but that's amazing if true, maybe there will be some other 30 backs as well.

Interesting times.

I was told by Kathy of Vectis there were no 30 back Fetts :?: :!:
