To address the rule about stifling education from other groups and pages, that's not true in that sense, we welcome links for educational purposes, more than ever right now, although we don't allow eBay links (because more often than not, links are posted to current or recently finished auctions)

Not true Dan, the pinned posted previously had a section stating that you actively encourage members to use other sites and included links to this forum, TIG, and a few others.
That isn't there anymore.

I think echo base is having somewhat of an epiphany, and perhaps is comping round to the fact that it is and will always only ever be a trading site.

Perhaps this is a bit sad for some of the users who are trying to create a community type vibe, and kudos to them for attempting to do so, however with 11,000 plus members, it looks great on paper and you can brag about the numbers all you want but it isn't condusive to the community they want, and maybe the past few days have shown this more than ever.

As much as the admin try to stamp authority on their group, you effectively have an angry mob. You can moan about prices all you want but in reality the group is so big the angry mob will do what they want. Really, there is very little control and they have had to go into lockdown and start banning people to get any kind of order back.

I really couldn't care less what happens on Facebook at the moment. Even if echo went, there are 3 other sites at least performing the same function and many more overseas ones. If they all went something would pop back up. The forum seems to be really alive and I have three events locked down over the next few months, which is by far the most rewarding part of the online community for me.

NOT because they are loyal to that Facebook page, but just simply using as a means to obtain something. For instants if I started a Facebook page with the promise of up to 50 new items listed for sale every week, then I too would end up with a Facebook group with thousands of members. It isn't because their loyal to me or my page, but simply because it's another means to obtain something. Now if people stopped listing items for sale on my page, then my Facebook page would instantly die! So whilst people may think highly of themselves, the truth is, you are nothing special.

We don't apply that rule hard and fast though, there's a lot of weapon queries which usually get pointed to TIG, the baggie scandal was pointed to here etc.
It mostly applies to eBay; we have info topics weekly where we list a lot of reference resources and so on.
Relevant links are usually left up if they help with a particular topic.
I'm well aware that you can't be blinkered to other sites that are out there and that we all use, and it's daft to just pretend they're not there!
Honestly not trying to be awkward in any of this, there's just only so many Darth Vader toaster links you can allow :-D

I'm not going to get into a dispute about Echo's pinned post other than we're really tying to find the best way of doing things.
It's common sense not to provide eBay links if an auction is live or recently finished, and it's easier to stop all links to eBay as people were constantly posting live auctions which isn't fair on those who might have been watching an item and their auction was 'outed'.

However we do share links on the Friday topic posts like here for example:

Or even better teach people how to search completed listings on Ebay, also direct people to Starwars tracker.

One of Facebooks pain in the ass limitations on the pinned post is you can't seem to link to individual posts (which is crazy)!
Screen grabs added to the files section might be a way round that. I agree it'd be useful to have them on hand.
I've also been speaking to Jared a lot lately about the tracker.
Currently it's probably the most sensible way to research prices.

The search function is horrendous!
A lot of people use Facebook on iPads etc and on tablets, the search bar within groups still hasn't been implemented!
Definitely one of the biggest obstacles in researching on there.

ive seen some good comment threads on facebook groups. but bugger me if i can find them a week or month later. buried and gone for ever.....

On the subject of approving posts I think his response is fair enough, I had to do it on here a few year back due to an influx of spammers, it does need doing sometimes and will hopefully only be temporary.

I think Ben is right that a choice has to be made by some groups, size or quality. It seems having both is impossible, especially on a format like Facebook with one single feed for a group.

Thanks Edd, you've pretty much hit the nail on the head there with the reasoning behind approving posts etc; there's a heck of a lot of spam and negative posts but already they seem to be easing off so hopefully the approval system will be lifted soon.
The quality/quantity issue is also very valid!

Don't get me wrong. Echo base has a community. I have met a number of them, including Adam on a few occasions and the much maligned Wayne totty. It's just the community is a tiny portion of regular posters and as the group grows, that element gets relatively smaller.

It is fast becoming a victim of its own success due to the size.

And let's be honest, the labelling of people is a bit silly. I know I always get "he's from swfuk" when I go places and I don't mind the association because I do spend the most time here, but at the end of the day wether you call yourself echo, jabbas, tig, whatever, it's all the same cardboard and plastic, and ultimately above that, and I feel people have really lost sight of this recently, it's not about the toys. It's about a film that was released 40 years ago and EVERYTHING that followed that defined my generation.

After months of us (the admin of Jabba's Palace auction group) getting grief from the Echo admin over auctions driving up prices and admin directly blaming us for the recent price hikes, what do the almighty Echo Base do when they loose control of their group and can't deal with all the issue regarding pricing?
They start their own auction group! Possibly the most hypocritical thing I've ever seen
