You may have missed it as most of the thread got deleted, but I got some serious backlash for suggesting the collectors in Echo Base were mainly in to low end collecting. Thankfully, this member was ready to prove me wrong:

Watch out Gus Lopez, this guy has some loose production figures!

I mean it wasn't even meant as a derogatory comment, do people really think I consider myself a high end collector while selling a MOC that looks like somebody has run over it? It's just amazing how clueless and arrogant some people are, Gus Lopez has the actual Death Star in his house, and then these guys on Facebook think they're Steve Sansweet because they've got a Yak Face. Incredible

With weapon Edd, don't forget the weapon...

I wondered what that was al about. Anyone got a screenshot of the original thread.

That guy is new to collecting. I sold him a loose ledy atst driver. He then posts asking what the differences are and sends me this long message about having to sell it because his finances are tight. I don't subscribe to this ask the seller ********. Once it's yours you can do what the **** you like with it.

So poor that he had to sell a £20 figure but could afford to go and pay echo prices for 2 vcjs, 2 yaks and a blue snag.

The last thing that I saw on there that could be considered anywhere near top end was Laurence's amanaman first shot, which they seemed to think if anything was to be done with a deal they would expect it all to be in the comments on the picture!

And today that Australian **** blocked me and Dan for suggesting his overstock was expensive.

Looks like rich temple and Ben potter have acquired the sabres and blasters for all his luke jedis. Makes a complete loose luke Jedi about £65 once you have got all the bits.

That's what got my back up, I'm not having somebody tell me my prices are too high on the FB page that is almost single handedly responsible for recent price increases. Like you say, look no further than the Luke Jedi's.

My new years resolution of not arguing with people online is going well

Very dissapointing, we deleted all the crap that got posted on your thread, supported your pricing, deleted peoples reactions to your accidental insult to most people on the group, and we still get hot topic of the day on here.......classy....

You deleted it all because you had to due to your rules, it only happened after I pointed it out to a mod.

You are also missing the point that my comments are about individuals, not your group. Touchy...

Pretty sure thats about the group? No?

Apart from putting lower end and not bell end I don't see a problem with that

Well A, it's true, like it or not. 99% of your members collect loose figures and beaters, that's a fact.

B, I could have worded it better yes but it was not meant as an insult. I don't consider myself a high end collector either.

Nobody suggested you were a high end collector Edd? As 99% of vintage items are loosies is it not a no brainer that they would be the most sold items?
Cant we all just get along? Lol

Bless him. He found a new hobby and he's showing the world he means business...

...and is a penis.

What strikes me as ironic is that here is a dedicated thread to the 'joys' Facebook groups and there we are buying and selling on there too.
I guess it's handy when you want it to be, the you can all run back here and slag it off and mock other enthusiastic, if maybe less knowledgable than the elite here, collectors.
How about helping out rather than sneering down at them?

It's simple really Dan, 10000 members means it's easy to sell stuff.

As for less knowledgable collectors, its like trying to flog a dead horse. You take time to try to educate and all you get is a load of stupid memes, a load of sarcasm and a load of I know best.

You admins take it all so personally. There isn't a great deal of criticism towards any of you here. A group is only as good as the members, and seemingly the new membership are more intent on buying things, anything, then learning about the hobby. As for calling people here 'elite', 95% of the questions that get asked these days could be answered with one google search. It's not being elite, its investing a little time to read a little about the hobby you claim to be so enthusiastic about.

I appreciate it might feel like flogging a dead horse at times and that this stuff might well be easily found - but newer collectors seek out groups thinking that they might just get some of that help from within; that's part of their research maybe.
It's not something I take personally at all, I just find it a little head scratching at times how devisive a common interest can be.

If it happened on here, I would have done exactly the same thing. I wasn't being elitist, if the thread hadn't all been deleted you would see that I made that comment because somebody suggested my trilogo Leia was too expensive because a ROTJ Darth Vader sold for less! So please don't try and make out that I was being arrogant, I was just dishing back to somebody who was giving me grief that had no idea what he was talking about.

If people talk ******** on here we point it out to them too.

Well there's a big generalisation Dan, ironic considering that's what you accused me of doing yesterday. Check my (and other members here) posts in Echo, I think you'll find we contribute quite a lot actually. I don't "sneer" at people with less knowledge than me, unless of course they are like the clowns yesterday shitting on my sales post when they clearly have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

What do you guys contribute here? Nothing. You have only joined to get stuck in on this thread. If you want "everyone to get along" why don't you start by contributing to other groups and forums. I am a member of about 20 Star Wars FB groups, many of which have thousands of members like yours. Yet 99% of the posts in this thread are about Echo Base. You think that's a coincidence? Your tactics of scaring your members away from eBay, forums and other FB groups means it's full of people with a very narrow minded view on collecting.

Like a few guys on here I am a member of a couple of groups and agree with a lot what has been said before. I think with a lot of new to the hobby members, in any group would keep admins busy as people learn the ropes but it seems most cant even read a pinned post with rules let alone google something. Seems most people want it all spoon fed to them and want it now but that can happen here also. I know **** all in the grand scheme of things and sometimes message others but I at least have a go
FB has its pros and its cons as Im sure some will say the same about forums. I don't see one as better than the other but after reading this thread daily and even more so today after a few group members have recently chimed in I find one a dam sight ****** funnier :D

I don't envy the position of an EB admin and to be fair (just for you Edd) they do a good job which at times must be very frustrating given the amount of questions etc they get about stuff that can be easily researched online, then there's the many house rules that have to be monitored and addressed.

The problem with FB is that any informative post that could aid newer members is lost within a matter of hours in the never ending feed of sales with the odd what's in the box post.

These newer collectors don't want to seem to broaden their knowledge by doing the research and would rather be spoon fed which is surprising. Surely when immersing yourself in a new hobby/passion you would want to do as much research as possible, this doesn't apply to everyone but you see it often.

An admin summed it up in a post today, the best selling platform for vintage Star Wars which is pretty much what these groups are, selling sites (nothing wrong with that). At least on a forum you have threads that are for specific areas of collecting and where valuable information is kept and not swamped down by hundreds of sales posts.

I certainly don't think there is an elitist attitude on SWFUK and any new member in the past has been welcomed and helped with any queries they've had.

As Tarkin would say, "this bickering is pointless!"

I have unfollowed the EB group so there won't be any more posts from me about the group in this thread, and hopefully it'll stop me getting sucked in to time-wasting arguments.

Perhaps the Echo guys could accept that running any kind of group means you will get a bit of criticism from time to time. If you don't like that happening on here, perhaps set up your own feedback thread where people can comment on the group without fear of being banned (hopefully no more "admin please delete if not allowed" posts!)

Hallelujah. I would also advise many of the others on this thread that constantly complain about the Echo Base group to do the same. I know Adam P relatively well (don't really know any of the other EB admins) and I know he is a good guy that cares about the hobby. Assume the other admins of that group are too. They run their group the way they want to, and it certainly has made it a very popular and well subscribed group. That's great for them and the group.

But it's not really my cup of tea (a little attempt at a poke at what Brits drink :D ), so I unfollowed a while ago. I pop in every once in a while (didn't leave the group) to see what's going on, but really spend my time in groups that have content that interests me more with rules I don't find to be draconian, controlling and counterproductive.

I advise others that feel the same as I do to do the same and move on. All the complaining and arguing is POINTLESS.

It's a shame to see my points have been *totally* missed and construed as trolling. This is absolutely not the case. Nor is this strictly about Echo, unfortunately, most comments in this entire thread seems to apply to Echo most of the time but obviously Facebook groups as a whole.
My defence of groups is not just about the comments that seem to deem users of the groups lowly or unknowledgable, but the blinkered attitude to their usefulness.
I don't buy or sell very much personally, anywhere, I use the groups (and I'm signed up to scores of them) for knowledge and learning. The specialist groups are excellent as a resource. No different with this forum, I read far more than I contribute, and have done for some time.
Writing personally, the fact I'm an admin on Echo is incidental. My gripe with threads like this is that they dismiss most groups on Facebook the same way, which to me is unfair and typical of traditional forum users - the same thing happens in many topic groups, classic gaming being another one that does this exact same thing.)
My point is, threads like this don't help. Comments like above don't help.
Crazy prices? Lack of knowledge? It's everywhere; but rather than screengrabbing said crazy prices, and then pasting them back here to gossip about, how can we make things better? This rubbish just isn't productive. Rather than going in circles, how about some positive input?
For the record again, I welcome suggestions to make the platform better, and again, with a common interest, why is it so fractured?
Happy to listen to your input.

Dan I have never had a problem with you but I think you and the other admins of Echo Base should worry about policing your own rules and members without trying to stamp down on the allowed freedom of speach on here.
Members of your group cannot criticise it on the group, there are many stories of admins reacting badly to criticism by PM and here several of you are taking this light hearted thread, your group and yourselves far too seriously.

The problem with the pinned post is it's passive; like it or not people don't read it and you get the same questions churned out every few days (I'm sure I don't need to tell you this!).

How about a more proactive approach from admin to educating members? For example something along the lines of 'collectors resource of the week', where you point people at a website (or part of a website) such as TIG. You can state why it's useful and encourage discussion on it within that post. You could also start conversations on certain aspects of collecting; for example, start a post asking members how they determine what's a fair price to pay for certain items. This encourages discussion and sharing of ideas between members and will again, hopefully, educate those who wish to be educated.

I don't see the problem with this thread either, perhaps that's part of the problem. :?

Plenty of members seem to contribute to this thread which says everything. I'm sorry RetroDan16 I'm sure your a nice bloke and I hope you stick around making this forum even more diverse than it already is.

But your going to get bombarded with reasons why this thread exists and keeps getting bumped.

All the best chap and hope to see you posting in some other threads soon. :)
