Talk about new Star Wars movie, do not read if you have NOT seen it

Good post Lee, and welcome to the dark side ;)

I wouldn't worry about too many Directors; look at the OT! If anything, I think it may have helped give each of the films it's own unique feel and that has to be considered another strength of the OT, so don't worry about it, It'll be fine ;)

Reading this thread I think I must be the only fan of Gleeson's Hux! Yes, it was OTT and yes he came across as a complete nut job, but for me that was how he was supposed be and the First Order a none too camouflaged 3rd Reich. Again, it's a bit lazy of the story to draw that parallel and the first three films managed to keep history and story telling separated despite there being names like Stomrtrooper and Death Squad Commander (quickly changed) about. The merging of history and fiction is blunt and unnecessary here but if Gleeson had a role to full I think he did it quite well.

Second viewing for me this morning and I changed my mind on a few things.

The score does come through early on, the character themes are really clear during the Jakku segment but then it just gets lost in the middle and barely come back at the end.

Totally changed my mind on Hux - I thought he worked in a deranged kind of way first time, but he seems weak second time around and the madness just didn't come through. I could hear Palpatine in my mind during his speech which wasn't good for me.

The ending seemed even more rushed this time as well - why doesn't Chewie spend time with Leia, why doesn't Luke speak? Maybe stuff got lost on final cuts, but it's so blatantly necessary it's a shame they never include anything for those moments, and if they needed time why no cut out the whole pirate gang/CGI bit in the middle. I'm not sure more action was necessary at that point.

Loved the Chewie rage - he's like "**** 'em all" as he presses the detonator. Bad ass wookie.

Kylo Ren I thought was a bit shallow first time, but he's actually got a ton of depth and I loved him.

Think there's much more story to come with Max von Sydow. He's clearly got history with Ren/Luke and probably Rey so no idea how we learn about all of that.

Will maybe see it one more time in January, but will definitely get the screenplay adaptation on 1/1/16.

Glad you saw it Lee, I had a funny feeling you would like it a lot more than you thought you would. Doesn't it feel nice to walk around with your head held high as a Star Wars fan again? :D

Am I the only one who cringed at Hux's grand speech to the order?

I thought he did the horrible sneering weasel type role quite well. I think he is just younger than we are used to for that type of role

I thought he played the part quite well, that speech was well acted, he looks like he's going to start foaming at the mouth by the end of it. He was abit underused for me overall, we need to see more of his crazy fascism coming through next time.

Yes, I found it a bit OTT. Very Hitler-ish. But I suppose that's what they were going for so...

Good on you Lee and Ian for seeing it and enjoying it more than you ever thought you would.

That said, I laugh at the amount of bad mouthing i'm reading from some people on this forum and other newer forums with regards to this movie. Get off of the keyboard and go and do some good or something worthwhile, it'a a bit pathetic.

I've seen scores of post from the same people getting all analytical and arsey about plots holes and issues, i mean come on guys: Bond, Bourne, Armageddon, even bloody Love Actually! You can walk through plot holes in almost every movie (including every SW movie) if you really want to, why does it appear that you are going out of your way to wee on everyone else's chips?

The whole; how this and what that...
Take it from me, it takes years to train to be a pilot. It takes months and months to be converted from one Fast Jet or helicopter type to another. Yet no one questioned how Luke, a farmboy who had flown a Skyhopper was able to pilot an X-Wing and knew all about its navigation computer and weapons etc during his inaugural flight. Ludicrous, but thats ok cuz GL said so.
Taun Tauns, appear to be creatures of Hoth, but why do they freeze in the cold? Strange. No, its fine, GL said so.
Why did they have to enter the bunker to blow it up? Surely they could have just flown the stolen shuttle towards it and shot it up with the shuttles lasers? No, because GL said they needed to introduce the Ewoks (Phasma).

I saw a post from Ian asking why the whoops and hollers from Finn and Dameron were OK but Anakins Yippee wasn't. Thats because no one and i mean no one this side of 1947 says Yippee.

People who say that its not SW because of a lack of GL are deluded. Are you saying that every Disney movie for the last 50+ years isn't a Disney because Walt had nothing to do with it? Skyfall and Spectre and all of Brosnon's movies aren't real Bond films because Fleming didn't write them?

This is a movie.
The issue is we watched the original as kids and therefore they are everything to us. I bet we could pull apart all sorts of issues with the OT but don't because they are sacrosanct.
You ever wondered why the generation above us couldn't really give 2 shits about SW? It's cuz they were our age in 77 and pulled it apart back then.
Let's just not try to over analyse the movies or we'll never ever love the cinema again.

This is a great movie and a much needed shot in the arm for Star Wars.

Well I went for a second viewing today with my daughter and if anything the film was better. Admitidaly it was in 2D which is always better than 3D, but I found almost nothing to moan about, the pacing seemed right, the interplay between Finn and Rey was excellent and I even noticed little moments and exchanges that passed me by the first time.

This time around with some of the heightened expectations out the way I really enjoyed Han's role in the film, and despite the death scene still bringing a tear to my eye it felt right, and the more I have thought about it, the more I realise this was the right call, end him on a high, let him live forever as the rouge and smuggler we all love rather than let him grow old(er) and play out as a shadow or parady of his former self on screen.

The best part was my daughters reaction, she loved it and straight after the film ended she almost ran to get herself a Rey action figure from the Disney store below the cinema, it was her first major cinema outing (a few kids films and animations aside) and it was a resounding hit... Role on Rouge 1 and Ep VIII :)

Anyone else wondering where 3PO's red arm had gone when he waves the MF off at the end? Obviously it's been repaired but why then and not before?

I really enjoyed it. There were some brilliant moments, such as most of the battle scenes, most of what Ren did, Rey exploring the disused star destroyer, Chewie smashed it, and stuff. Call me blasphemous but I thought Harrison Ford was on autopilot and Carrie Fisher looked like her plastic surgery was stopping her face from being able to act properly. There were moments of true BS as well that almost spoiled it for me. Yes I know it's a fantasy but some stuff seemed completely ridiculous- Chewie and Han have been mates for decades, in millions of scraps together and you're telling me that it's 40 years in to that friendship that Han is first forced, due to weapon failure / lack of availability, to use Chewie bowcaster? Bollox.

However as a spectacle difficult to knock, star wars greatest hits-yes but if you can take it with a pinch of salt, a Christmas best of album that brought back some great memories and kept me glued to the screen. Will be definitely looking forward to more.

Just watched it the second time and I love it even more!

Still can't get my head around anyone who thinks this is worse than any of the prequels!

I've been thinking about Harison Fords performance a lot, at first thought the same a bit ropey. But after thinking about it, have to say he might have nailed it. Han Solo was written as a young cowboy, it must have been a hard thing to do moving that caractor on 40 years? Only watched the film once, going again tomorrow with son and can't wait. It's Star Wars after all. Love reading all the different opinions, great to see so many members posting again. :)

I can't get my head around how anyone who loves Star Wars deslikes ROTS, but we're all different and each to their own. :D

Yeah maybe I'm being harsh on Ford. It's just he's such a God in my eyes and I expect him to be this amazing character (probably accentuated by boyhood eyes). Let's face it if your kid killed all the Jedi and then became the intergalactic bad man you'd no doubt lose a bit of your sparkler and become galaxy weary. Maybe he has nailed it. I still had the instinct that he was going through the motions on a payout rather than the spark we saw in the OT but i need to see it again. Good excuse!

I think it gets better with every watch.

I loved it more than ever today. It's just a little under the OT which is good considering the OT has been everything for over 30 years.

I saw it with my mate today. She doesn't get Star Wars. She was cheering, crying, an emotional mess by the end of it. She turns to me at the end- "that was ****ing epic!".

Stay away from the 3D. Both times I have seen it in 2D were far better expernces than both times in 3D.

This film (with a few tiny niggles) is ****ing incredible.

And to follow Jez. What to tauntauns eat? There's no flora on Hoth.

I can't believe we have a genuine new Star Wars film. Bring them on. I'm **** ecstatic.

Jez's post has cheered me up. Very bad day.

When I read the nitpicking it saddens me. I take it really personally. The force awakens is a cracker, it's made to entertain, it's not an art house film, or best picture fodder. I get the feeling these days, we are in a culture to want to express our opinion so quickly. I stopped going to the cinema for a while because every time I departed, some bore was moaning about how **** it was.. No matter what. It was as if that was the only reason they went, so they could bitch. Some of the comments on here appear the same..

It's got people talking about Star Wars. Tonight I joined some young leamington fc fans for a drink and a meal (after our match was postponed) and we discussed in length Star Wars. They were intrigued at my sageness, and they wanted to know how to get into Star Wars and what order to watch the first 6 films and we debated the machete order and it was such fun, I felt like Han Solo telling Rey and Finn that it was all true. We were the last ones out of the place still talking Star Wars, as they find me mad when I go off to farthest from, or talk about my latest MOC. They all had an entry point into Star Wars (me... Clone wars, or maybe the films being on at Christmas), and the great thing is everyone had an affection for it. And I guess people give me the time of day because they know I'm so passionate about it.

There is no point to my point... It's just a point

They eat Lurpack of course

I enjoyed it very much and have seen it four times now, the latest being in 3d earlier today. I think the acting from everyone is amazing, the new characters were great and Daisy Ridley is phenomenal as Rey. It's a wonderful star to a new trilogy and I cannot wait to see what Episode VIII has in store.

Great post Jez!! 8) 8) Hope everyone is well BTW :)

This needs to be posted over on the RS thread as the level of negatively and nit picking over there is ridiculous.
