As Im looking these days for some carded figures I have a few questions regarding them.

Is there any guide or easy ways to spot a recarded figure ? When Im looking at ebay (not my preferred place to look, but its always some Stormtroopers on there) I try to compare them to graded ones and to me it seems like the punch is an easy way to spot a recarded one.
I also read about the wafer pattern, but this doesnt seem to be decisive ?. Also I check that the bubble is not oversized.

What other ways can I decide, looking at pictures that a Carded figure actually is original ? Im contemplating a bid on an ungraded MOC ESB Stormtrooper in the range 100-150 pounds I just want to make sure I dont fall into any traps early in my collecting career.

Also, Im just curious to why the ESB Troopers have an extra number below the product number like #asst 39300.

Would appreciate any input on this topic :)

No matter how careful or experienced you are, you will fall for one eventually. I'm happy to admit I've fallen for one in the past. Sometimes greed gets the better of you, you see a cheap figure and go for it without checking it out properly.

There is no one rule, the best thing to do is compare with a photo of a known genuine one. All years, countries etc have different bubbles, glues, card stock etc.

I have a question too, about wafer pattern, is it common on ROTJ cards to not have them?
I've noticed my 65back Klaatu has the pattern, but not my 77back Vader...
Have read some online, but nothing is clear, waiting on approval to get in to TIG atm
to check there.
Are there any guides on bubbles and gluepatterns elsewhere? Would be a good topic on this forum, no?

Edit: 65back Klaatu, not 77...

There are two main types of bubble seal- the waffle pattern and slick seal. Your Vader sounds like a slick seal, my first ever moc had a slick seal and I thought it was a fake! They are pretty common though.

Maybe best to post some pictures if you would like to some opinions of the legitimacy of it?

Joe O to the rescue!

Waffle pattern on the left, slick seal on the right

Maybe I wasn't clear, I know what the different seals look like, :p just didn't know if slick seals was common on ROTJ cards,
or if there was some sort of guide that could help...

Edit: I wasn't questioning the legitimacy of the Vader, trusted seller source, just wondering about the different seals on ROTJ cards :p

Is the Vader Made in Mexico- Gloss card front and Matte back? All of the MIMs I have had through my hands are slick seals. Hope this helps

As previously mentioned Kenner 'Made In Mexico' cards have a slick seal, as do ROTJ Palitoy/European cards.
All of the US Kenner ROTJ cards I have owned/seen have the waffle pattern.

It has the Anakin offer sticker covering the bottom of the back stating it's made in hong kong. Kenner on front.

I have a MIM Logray like that. The sticker on the back will say Hong Kong. If the back of the card has a matt finish & poor colour/printing, then it will be a MIM Vader. If the saber is a Ledy one it will have a much thicker tip than the standard Kenner version. Unfortunately MIM figures can come with Ledy or Kenner accessories.

Maybe Iain can chime in on origin of this piece? ;)

That puts my mind at rest for a Vader I've got. Been in my mind for ages that it's a fake as it has the slick seal.

Hmm - maybe Iain will have to go and check where/when he got it !

Just as a side note I have seen plenty of standard Kenner us carded figures without waffle patterns. These aren't strictly a sign of made in Mexico cards although all of the made in Mexico carded figs ive owned have had slick seal bubbles.

I recently bought ed a death squad commander on a standard ESB us Kenner card and it had a slick seal. It was a 41 back I believe.

Thanks anyway Iain, thanks for the info Chris, always learning more everyday eh?
