PL 2017-2018 Thread

The predictions thread put me in the mood for some pre season musings.

Chelsea - No idea WTF is going on at Stamford Bridge. Last summer their transfer activity was absolutely superb. Kante in for a decent price dead early. This summer they sell Matic for I don't know what reason, he's not amazing but a very solid and dependable player, they don't replace him. It looks like they don't want Costa which is strange as he is the focal point of their team. He's a hateful human being on a football pitch, but he is the only player they have who can do what he does. Morata is a strange one. Not a bad player but nowhere near worth what they paid and nothing like Costa in style. It cold be a tricky season for them, they did get lucky with injuries last year. Still with JT away at least the team can relax and know their wives and gf's are safe.

Spuds - Novel idea, not buying a single player/Not sure it's a good one but sure. I don't know if it's Daneil Levy refusing to pay stupid money or if it's a case of they can't get whoever it is they want, but their squad does need another back up striker. If Kane snaps his leg/cruciate they are ****ed. Son did ok last year but I wouldn't want to rely on him for months on end. Jansen is just out of his depth. Saying that, if they can keep that side together and spend a bit of the Walker money on a bit of strengthening I still think they will comfortably make CL. Although I can't help feel that they are passing up a great chance at a genuine PL title push by refusing to spend. Memories of Villa not pushing under Martin O'Neill from 10 ish years ago spring to mind.

City - That midfield/forward line is ****ing scary. Sane, Jesus, Aguero, KDB, Silva, Sterling, etc etc. They should be brilliant to watch next year. Although the back line is still ropey. They have cut out some of the dead wood, apart from Nasri who no one wants, but the back 4/5 still look soft and as for holding midfield options of an ageing Yaya, Fernando/fernandinho (whichever one wasn't sold) and the injury prone Grundogan, I can see the likes of Pool and Spuds licking their lips at the thoughts of playing against them. Those games in particular could be brilliant entertainment. Cue four 0-0 draws.

Pool - It all depends what happens with Coutinho. If he goes they will do incredibly well to make CL. If he stays I think they could push the top two a bit more this year. Him behind Firminio, Mane and Salah (no African Cup of Nations this year, TF) with Sturridge (stop laughing) and Solanke on the bench could be superb to watch. The back four still scares me. Moreno is still there  and Mingers will revert to type at some point. Quite why Jurgen hasn't signed a Keeper, a CB and a LB I don't know/ Those are the three positions Liverpool needed to strengthen and ehh none have been strengthened.

Utd - Potential title favourites? Really!? I don't see it. I actually think they are weaker this year than last. Zlatan massively exceeded my expectations and carried that team for large chunks of the season. He ain't there now. Lukaku is not in the same class. Lukaku also has a reputation for going missing against the big sides. I'm trying not to read too much into the humping Real gave them last night. Real are the best side in Europe and thus probably the world, but that score line flattered Utd massively. Real never really got out of 3rd gear and Utd spent 45 mins with 10 men on the edge of their own box. Despite spending I don't know how many hundred million Jose's plan B is STILL throw on Fellaini and hoof long balls at his head. That's straight out of the Fat Sam tactical book, which itself is from early 90's football, and we all remember how good that was to watch and how successful it was when English sides got back into Europe. Talk of Bale arriving is nonsense. WHY would he leave RM? Matic is a decent signing, although like all signings this summer he cost too much. Saying that, did Utd really need another CM? If so WTF was wrong with Schweinsteigger and Sneiderlin? One's a ****ing WC winner for Christ sake. It just strikes me as Jose forcing two solid players out only to replace them with a 40 million pound player of his own. Money that didn't need spent, fixing an area of the squad that didn't need fixed. Jose being Jose.

Everton - some good signings and generals quad strengthening, plus they have brought the average age of the team down. I still can't see them making the top 6 but I do think they will be a bit closer this year. Assuming they can cope without Lukaku. Hell they may even win a Merseyside Derby this year, for the first time in **** knows how long.
did you forget the mighty Arse? :D

Oops!

I did get distracted for half an hour as I was midway through.

Arsenal - Hard to see any massive improvement here. The club has been treading water for nearly ten years now, and in PL terms that means going backwards. They haven't made any big signings, Lacazette is below Giroud in the pecking order for France so sorry but he isn't a massive signing for me. Add that to Ozil and Sanchez both running down contracts if not looking to leave and Wenger staying on to continue burying his head in the sand/convincing no one the club is going forward and all I can see is another year of flattering to deceive for Arsenal. I hope I'm wrong as I do like the club, but given nothing has changed I don't see how a broken record will suddenly sound any better. No doubt they will hump a few of the PL lesser lights and Wenger will spout some shite about being a force to be reckon with, then as always they will choke and **** away any remote PL title challenge only to then go on an unbeaten run (against no one who counts) and Wenger to spout more shite about "mental strength" and a title challenge. It's all so very very predictable/boring/sad. At least they may have a European campaign that gets beyond the first knock out round this year. Though, with Arsenal's record they will probably draw the best side to be knocked out of the CL group stages and lose

Arsenal - Had to see any massive improvement here. The club has been treading water for nearly ten years now, and in PL terms that means going backwards. Did you copy and paste that from last year? Oh no, my mistake, just BAU from us

I do feel sorry for Arsenal fans. It's just all so predictable and monotonous. I just wish someone at that club had a set of balls or a brain and put Wenger out to pasture and brought in someone new. There is actually potential there but Wenger's stubbornness is killing the club.
When was the last time he turned a good/average player into something special? Henry was 10+ years ago.

I don't think it's all doom and gloom for Arsenal this season, at least they have a settled squad!

Well we already have a winner for the dumbest ever substitution, and the season is ehh 1 game old.

Take a bow Craig Shakespeare! Your team is 3-2 up and looking comfortable away to Arsenal so obviously taking off a holding midfielder and replacing him with a striker is a very sensible decision. There was literally nothing to be gained by it, and everything to be lost. THREE minutes later and Arsenal are 4-3 up, the game is lost and your team have imploded.
It's only one game, but results like that do tend to have much more psychological impact than you would expect. That will be a massive boot in the balls for Leicester and a huge confidence boost for Arsenal. It must be said Arsenal were very poor. That back line was all over the place. Liecester looked like the 15-16 vintage, until Craig decided to shaft them.

In all seriousness I can't think of a single worse substitution ever. Genuinely staggered by the stupidity of it.

Well, that was ****ing dreadful.

When I saw Moreno was starting for Liverpool I very nearly didn't watch it. Some of the defending in that game (by both sides) was abysmal though. It was the sort of stuff you would bollock a Sunday league player for doing. Pains me go say it, but Moreno wasn't responsible for any of it either. That's how bad everyone else was.
The game was quite similar to Arsenal's on Friday night. Neither Pool nor Arsenal played well. Neither look like they can defend to save their lives. Neither will win anything this year if they keep going like that. A draw would have been a fair result in both games. But unlike in Arsenal's game Liverpool didn't face an opposition manager who was intent in ****ing his own team. While Arsenal have the morale boost of grinding out a possibly undeserved win, Pool have the frustration of throwing away 2pts with some utterly shambolic defending. That is the kind of result that comes back to haunt you in May, when those 2pts could well be crucial.

I suspect Southampton may be getting a call along the lines of "how much for Van Dyke again?"

Good result for Stoke. Can anybody explain to me why Wenger always brings Giroud on as a sub? Is it because he's not fit enough to play a full match? It's not like he is Arsenal's secret weapon, he's their best striker so every time he brings him on teams adjust accordingly. Granted they can't always stop him, but it's much easier to stop a team's best scorer for 30 minutes than it is for 90!

Didn't take Spurs long to get back to their old tricks. 100% conversion rate of Chelsea's two shots on target, call it bad luck or skill on Chelsea's part, but it needs to stop. I can see every goal coming a mile away. Can't complain too much losing to the defending champions, but it would be nice if just once the game stats reflected the final score in a game against Chelsea.

Eriksen couldn't put a foot wrong, but Harry's inability to score in August has hurt a lot today, we could and should've had at least one if not three in the first half, but we pulled it back eventually. Then Lloris, who's mistake's are as rare as a Madine Tri-Logo literally watches the weakest shot of the weekend go right past/under him... oh well at least we have the Wembley Hoodoo to cling to

Missed all the games this w/e, on honeymoon, but I'll just assume Pool were amazing and looked like potential CL winners.

Heard the ref had a shocker in the city everton game.

Since when do Liverpool have to look amazing to win the CL?! Loose the first 3 games of the group stage, scrape through on goal difference, go 3-0 down in the final and then win on pens.

It does my head in anyway, were to games in and everyone's getting carried away. This time last season Chelsea were written off and Man City were gonna go the entire season without loosing. Half the clubs are still in pre season mode.

Agreed. This time a year ago, City were on fire. The won ten on the spin....and finshed trophyless in 3rd. Chelsea were stinking the place out and Conte was rumoured to be close to losing his job/quitting....they won the league.

Utd have won two games 4-0. I havent seen either, but i have seen plenty of Utd fans gloating about being "back" etc. They may have played well, i don't know, but it's two games, and they beat Swansea and WH, neither of whom are classed as the PL's biggest and best.

As for Liverpool, I'd be hapoy enough if they repeated their 05 antics in teh CL this year. They had Djimi Traore. "playing" at LB then and they have actually gone one worse with Moreno this year. Mind you, i expect them to lose to hoffenheim tomorrow.

Utd have played well, but like you say Swansea and West Ham aren't exactly big tests are they. The Swansea game was never a 4 - 0 although I would argue Man Utd were very clinical so you take your chances and get what you deserve, but it was only 1 - 0 in the 80th minute which says it all.

Whatever you say about JM he has got Man Utd playing well and going in the right direction, are we gonna come close to winning the league? We should do with that squad, but getting excited after 2 games is ridiculous. November/December things start taking shape if you ask me.

One thing I would put my house on is Arsenal aren't going to win it!

No but they'll definitely win something, they are like a trophy magnet. Doesn't matter how bad they play in the league or who they get drawn against in the cups, they have a habit of having luck on their side (two cup final wins against the champions in a row, what are the odds of that?)

They are already the most decorated club of the season after two games

That is true, Wenger does put a trophy in the cabinet. I see Rooney has retired from taking penalties for England.

We're going to miss his goal threat at the next World Cup!

That's a tough group for Spurs, but I don't see why Dortmund have a better chance to get out of that group.
