The predictions thread put me in the mood for some pre season musings.
Chelsea - No idea WTF is going on at Stamford Bridge. Last summer their transfer activity was absolutely superb. Kante in for a decent price dead early. This summer they sell Matic for I don't know what reason, he's not amazing but a very solid and dependable player, they don't replace him. It looks like they don't want Costa which is strange as he is the focal point of their team. He's a hateful human being on a football pitch, but he is the only player they have who can do what he does. Morata is a strange one. Not a bad player but nowhere near worth what they paid and nothing like Costa in style. It cold be a tricky season for them, they did get lucky with injuries last year. Still with JT away at least the team can relax and know their wives and gf's are safe.
Spuds - Novel idea, not buying a single player/Not sure it's a good one but sure. I don't know if it's Daneil Levy refusing to pay stupid money or if it's a case of they can't get whoever it is they want, but their squad does need another back up striker. If Kane snaps his leg/cruciate they are ****ed. Son did ok last year but I wouldn't want to rely on him for months on end. Jansen is just out of his depth. Saying that, if they can keep that side together and spend a bit of the Walker money on a bit of strengthening I still think they will comfortably make CL. Although I can't help feel that they are passing up a great chance at a genuine PL title push by refusing to spend. Memories of Villa not pushing under Martin O'Neill from 10 ish years ago spring to mind.
City - That midfield/forward line is ****ing scary. Sane, Jesus, Aguero, KDB, Silva, Sterling, etc etc. They should be brilliant to watch next year. Although the back line is still ropey. They have cut out some of the dead wood, apart from Nasri who no one wants, but the back 4/5 still look soft and as for holding midfield options of an ageing Yaya, Fernando/fernandinho (whichever one wasn't sold) and the injury prone Grundogan, I can see the likes of Pool and Spuds licking their lips at the thoughts of playing against them. Those games in particular could be brilliant entertainment. Cue four 0-0 draws.
Pool - It all depends what happens with Coutinho. If he goes they will do incredibly well to make CL. If he stays I think they could push the top two a bit more this year. Him behind Firminio, Mane and Salah (no African Cup of Nations this year, TF) with Sturridge (stop laughing) and Solanke on the bench could be superb to watch. The back four still scares me. Moreno is still there  and Mingers will revert to type at some point. Quite why Jurgen hasn't signed a Keeper, a CB and a LB I don't know/ Those are the three positions Liverpool needed to strengthen and ehh none have been strengthened.
Utd - Potential title favourites? Really!? I don't see it. I actually think they are weaker this year than last. Zlatan massively exceeded my expectations and carried that team for large chunks of the season. He ain't there now. Lukaku is not in the same class. Lukaku also has a reputation for going missing against the big sides. I'm trying not to read too much into the humping Real gave them last night. Real are the best side in Europe and thus probably the world, but that score line flattered Utd massively. Real never really got out of 3rd gear and Utd spent 45 mins with 10 men on the edge of their own box. Despite spending I don't know how many hundred million Jose's plan B is STILL throw on Fellaini and hoof long balls at his head. That's straight out of the Fat Sam tactical book, which itself is from early 90's football, and we all remember how good that was to watch and how successful it was when English sides got back into Europe. Talk of Bale arriving is nonsense. WHY would he leave RM? Matic is a decent signing, although like all signings this summer he cost too much. Saying that, did Utd really need another CM? If so WTF was wrong with Schweinsteigger and Sneiderlin? One's a ****ing WC winner for Christ sake. It just strikes me as Jose forcing two solid players out only to replace them with a 40 million pound player of his own. Money that didn't need spent, fixing an area of the squad that didn't need fixed. Jose being Jose.
Everton - some good signings and generals quad strengthening, plus they have brought the average age of the team down. I still can't see them making the top 6 but I do think they will be a bit closer this year. Assuming they can cope without Lukaku. Hell they may even win a Merseyside Derby this year, for the first time in **** knows how long.
