PL 2017-2018 Thread

I can't really defend Giggs on the brother situation, although I've never understood the logic in that being worse than cheating on your wife.

For me it's the double of cheating on your wife AND ****ing over your own brother.

I'm not saying top players automatically become good managers that's clearly not the case, but well done for trying, their multi million air's, you must have something if you won't to carry on to management after the game has taken your entire adult life until retirement.

True, though is it a lack of options? All they know is football. I guess they have management or punditry and while both pay well, punditry has a lower stress level but it probably doesn't have the day to day banter that they are so used to. I know a lot of retired footballers find the loneliness or lack of daily "banter" the biggest challenge when they stop playing.

If your a championship or Scottish Premiership player your going to want to play for Gerrard or Lampard over Neil Warnock.

Yeah, I can't argue with that/ Warnock is ballbag. Although I would have more confidence in him getting a side out of the Championship than Lampard, I'd still prefer to play for Fat Frank.

She's got about as much class as Mike Ashley, Giggs obviously has issues with his brain. Just google it she slept with half the squad by the looks of things.

This should put a smile on the face of our fearless leader....

New 6 year deal for Kane meaning he is either committed of Levi is making damn sure of a return on his investment

Contracts mean feck all in footy these days. All that means is he has just been given a pay rise.

And if Real Madrid want him they have to pay more. I think he will stay at Spurs for a while yet.

Yeap. He'll stay for the nxt 18 months or so. After that, who knows. He may decide (if Spurs havent won anything meaningful) that he wants to win trophies and that he has to move on. Or he may be happy being a 1 club man (or Spurs may have started to win proper trophies) who knows.

Kane signing at Spurs for six years only means he's more than likely staying for two years... it does seem that Spurs have a major decision to make in the next six months...

They have what are regarded as the finest training facilities in Europe.
They are about to move into the most modern (and what looks to be in the top teir) stadium in the country and one that will rank amongst the best in Europe too.
They have 'tied' Kane (one of the best players in the Premier League) to a longer term contract.
They have 'tied' Poch (one of the best managers in Europe (based on the links with RM and the last three seasons performance)) to an extended long term contract.
They have now delivered consistency in the league.

But...

They need to win something soon; be that by luck, or judgement
They need to build on the squad, not let it be picked apart... Erikksen and Toby particularly need addressing... we've been repeatively told that the stadium finances are well in hand and will not affect the squad and a marquee signing would not go amiss if one makes sense.

All very obvious I'm sure... I really don't want to be sat at the end of the World Cup or the end of the transfer window waiting for them to get theses basics resolved while other teams (I see Arsenal, Liverpool and United have all been active in the market already) are getting their business done in good time.

The problem is Spurs are run as a proper business. City, Utd, Chelsea, Real, PSG etc are all run at a huge loss as a status symbol for foreign owners (I won't call them investors because spending £150m a year is not an investment.) This chart of the 2017/2018 spending says it all:

No coincidence that the top two in the table match the top two spenders. City literally bought the title. What really needs to happen is that fans accept not every team can win the league every year and be happy where they are. Sadly that's not how football works, and you just can't compete with teams with bottomless pockets. IMO the only thing that will fix it is tougher financial fair play rules rather than the joke system in place now. If PL teams were not allowed to run at a loss, what a different table it would be.

Man Utd run at a profit and don't swindle the financial fare play rule which is a complete waste of time. Utd turned over something like £580 million last financial year, more than any other football club in the world and always turn over a profit, the Glazers service all their debts on that fact.

Shame since Fergie retired Man Utd have almost spent more on players than he did in his 27 years in charge though!

I agree though Spurs are a very well run club, just don't put Man Utd in the same bracket as Chelsea and Man City, all our spending is self earnt, same as Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Jack Wheelchair confirms he's leaving Arsenal, because he thinks he is good enough to get regular football at a top six team. Good luck with that somewhere else.

He is a good player, WHEN he's fit. The same is true of Sturridge. But they are so injury prone that you can't rely on them.
I agree though, I can't see any of the top 6 coming in for him, unless City need a few more English boys to push up their quota. He'll want 100k+ PW and I suspect that will put Pool and Spurs off. Will Utd, City or Chelsea want to fork that out for an injury prone solid if unspectacular English player!?

I'd guess that the fact he wouldn't make the bench at Spurs would put Spurs off more than the likely salary demand...
Crystal Palace or West Ham would be my bet...Everton at an outside chance.

Yeah, and him being an ex-gooner, but I meant more the fact that Spurs are famous for not being big payers (except for their Chairman who obviously deserves the massive pay rise ehhh he gave himself).

I have heard rumour of WH being in for Wilshire, realistically that's probably the level he is looking at.

Ronaldo to Juve is a strange one. I cant figure out who got the better end of that deal. He isnt the player he was, but then he knows that and has adapted his game well. He no longer runs from deep beating 5 men, now he is more of a penalty box poacher. But then he has won/achieved all he can at Madrid. He will never be recognised as head and shoulders better than Messi, and vice versa, and he has won titles, CL's and top scorer in Spain so what's left to do? Saying that nearly 100million for a 33year old is big money and a big gamble. One injury like Zlatan had and he will look like a waste of money.
Serie A should suit him though, the pace is less than PL or La Liga so he may well get 2/3/4/5 years whereas in La Liga he probably only would have got 2/3.
And I guess it allows him to continue to be the biggest fish which is what he's more concerned about.

Shakira to Liverpool is a strange one. On the one hand 14m for a player with PL experience and who has looked good in a pish side is not a bad deal. Especially as Pool probably still need a bit more strengthening in midfield and upfront. He ticks both boxes. He will probably be a backup for the front 3 and an option in midfield against some of the lesser lights.
BUT, he has never exactly looked like someone who likes to work off the ball. Quite the opposite. He looks like a ****ing prima donna who stands there and waits for his team mates to give him the ball. That's NOT gonna work in Jurgen's gengen press style of play. I can only assume he has been told he will have to run and that he is no longer a big fish in a small pond, but a small fish in a bigger pond. We will see. Regardless Jurgen's record with outfield signings has been good, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for the moment.

I see Lovern came out and said he should be recognised as one of the best defenders in the world. He was being serious as well.
That's clearly not going to come back and bite him in the ass!
****ing moron.
He's not even the second best CB at Liverpool FFS.
