PL 2016-2017 Thread

Ahh, interesting.

Not a huge amount between them, 2 whole points. I think Brendan had a slight advantage in having Suarez, but still I would have thought Klopp would have been ahead of him. Amazing the impact of media scrutiny, or lack there of. I think I'd still have Klopp mind. He does talk a bit of gubbins at times but BR just spouted shite every single time he opened his mouth, and he opened his mouth a lot mainly to show off his lovely shiny teeth!

I agree JM has underachieved as far as the league is concerned, although I don't really see how anyone thought he would win the league in his first season, with the mess the club got itself into the previous 3 seasons.

But and it's a big but, if Man Utd win the Europa League then it's a good first season. Two trophies and qualifying for the CL will be in no way a bad season. Apart from Chelsea I'm sure every other club in the top 6 would prefer that to the season they have had.

As I said it's all if's at the moment, if Man Utd don't win the Europa league then it's a disastrous season and no matter what happens next season both Manchester clubs have to improve.

I was thinking about Utd's season the other day. I don't know how to describe it. Again, I'm assuming they win the EL.

I guess making the CL and winning two trophies is far from "bad" BUT the League cup is a pathetic excuse for a competition. Yes, it is a trophy but it's not the sort of thing a top European player will look at and think that's a club going places. Also, and this is not Utd's fault, but the EL has been a walk in the park this year. The sides Utd have faced have been the very definition of second tier. Look at last year's competition which had Utd, Pool, Dortmund and Sevilla in it. I know Utd have no control over who else is in the thing, and it does give you a CL spot, but it has been a distinctly underwhelming competition, were it not for the CL spot I suspect Jose would have fielded his under 12's and got knocked out a long time ago.
As fas as Utd's league form goes, I think they have been poor. They haven't really been in the title race at any stage since the very start of the season. This is Man United, a club whose fans call the PL trophy "their" trophy. For Utd to be so far off the pace, and after spending how many hundred million over the summer, I think is massive underachievement.
Yes, it was Jose's first season at Utd, but Jose knows the PL inside and out, he shouldn't need time to settle in. They also signed Pogba and Ibrahimovic, those are two players with a history of winning things. To add two players like that to a squad with a bucket load of PL experience and actually go backwards is damming.
And before the issue of number of games comes up, Real have played just as many and they aint gurning, plus I suspect their opponents in April in particular were a tad harder than Utd's. Also, it was fairly obvious Utd would be playing a lot of games, they are a great side and the EL demands a lot of games. So why did Jose let so many players leave in the summer, AND then chase out Sweinsteigger and Sneiderlin at xmas? That's cutting your nose off to spite your face. Or Jose being Jose (ie a wanker).

I'm not saying Utd had a "bad" season but at the same time I don't really think it can be called a "good" season. CL is CL, but achieved by the back door, and two trophies are obviously better than none, but surely a club like Utd, given the squad they have (everyone agreed LVG underachieved and Jose has done worse), the players they signed and the fact they have a proven PL winning manager, should have done much much better.

Also, they are only marginally better to watch than under LVG. Granted, they were unwatchable under him and Jose's teams are never good to watch but they still aren't a side a neutral would look forward to watching.

And for the record, I'm not saying Liverpool are amazing and had a better, or worse, season. I just think Utd have had a weird one.

Ohh and if Utd don't win the EL, that is a massive backward step of a season.

I know the League Cup, FA Cup and EL are all pretty much meaningless these days but credit to Utd for taking the EL seriously. Spurs could have smashed that and the FA Cup with a little effort. Just win something next season, anything. And WTF were teams like Bournemouth doing playing their B team in the FA Cup, get a grip.

Their not meaningless to me, it's bloody hard to win any major trophie in football and when your team does, as a supporter you should make the most of it, as you never know when the next one will come along. I can't believe Liverpool have had 10 trophie less seasons out of the last 11!

Also I look at it this way, apart from winning the league or the Champions league itself, surely the third best way to qualify is by winning a major trophie i.e. The Europa league. Rather than finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th in the league.

I have a funny feeling Arsenal are going to win all their remaining games and Pool will drop more points and finish 5th. It just has that Liverpool-esque "let's **** this up" aura about it.

I've just looked at the table, if Arsenal make the top 4 I won't believe it! Don't worry Arsenal have got Stoke away on Saturday.

Man Utd will do well to finish in the top 6.

I reckon Arsenal will finish top 4 too, they always manage it somehow, contrary to popular belief they don't stroll in to the CL every season.

Football fans all over...

A Spurs fan (or few as I feel the same) that is sure their biggest traditional rival will get in the top four
A liverpool fan who's sure his own team will fall out of the top four
We're all pessimists at heart I'm sure! I often wonder why we all bother depressing ourselves

And an Arsenal fan who would actually enjoy a decent run in the Europa cup rather than champions league tedium and misery

None of us will be happy

It's Arsenal......they'll cruise through the group, wenger will take his foot off the gas and play the under 11's in your last 2 games after qualification is assured, you'll finish second and then draw some properly big European side who somehow managed to finish third in their CL group and you'll be knocked out in Jan/Feb as always.

At least it wiuld be a different competition.

I swore I was done with football at the end of last season, that Newcastle game is the most furious I've ever been over a football match. I deleted all my football related browser bookmarks and everything! A week later I was back on it

Liverpool 1-0 and deserve it. Naff game, but they took their chance. Best I can hope for here is a late Hammers equaliser. They're already on the beach.

I think most the Man Utd squad have been on the beach all season, that was shocking today. Ok Spurs are one of the best teams in Europe at the moment and it being their last game at White Heart Lane made it difficult for Utd, but still!

Going on that performance De Gea, Martial and Bailly are the only players fit to put on a Man Utd shirt out of the starting 11. Ok when Rashford came on the game changed, but then it was pretty much route one! You could argue if the Europa League final was not a factor Rashford may have started and it could have been a different game? :?

The other positive I can take which know one really mentions is most of Utd's best players are still young and will only get better.

Not sure what to make of that. Pool were the better side, as you said WH are on the beach, BUT WH should have had a penalty at 2-0. That goes in and it's a totally different game, especially as Pool scored the third 5 seconds after the pen wasn't given.

I half watched Utd against Spurs. Spurs were head and shoulders better than Utd but then Utd played a weakened side as Jose is putting all his eggs in the EL basket. While that is understandable, given their CL odds were slim, it also shows how far Utd have fallen. Under Fergy they would have had a PL title race AND a decent shot a CL glory without one affecting the other. Now it seems they can do one or the other. It's not like they have the wafer thin squad Pool have. Still if they beat Ajax (and if you can't beat Ajax you don't deserve to be in the CL) they will be in CL and that's probably all the fans care about.

I'm glad they got all that being half decent at football malarkey out of their system against your lot. Made Liverpool's job a dam sight easier.
