dont really know where to start here .bit drunk so the typing is prob gonna be worse then normal .
went to cinema today to watch mib 3 with our lass and two six yeat old lads .ok it cost 40 sheets and thats with out the sweets we got from tesco before we got there. now i prob could have got this for 2 pound on pirate but would have never have had the enjoyment i had today and belive me the film was good but watching them two lads faces was price less .
my point is if people were not so tight or lazy and went to the cinema more rather then just watching a half decent copy at home for 2 pound would it have cost me 40 bsheets today .
because if it carries on then the money wont be there to make great movies and the whole experiance of enjoying a great film will be lost for say our kids kids .
hope that makes sense as i cant even read that back lol

LOL at first I thought this was going to be about Pirates of the Caribbean.

well the studios and film makers, producers etc earn there crust from box office money, dvd sales etc. i dont agree with pirate material! its the small film companies and budget film makers that i feel sorry for they loose out the most! they cant survive when it comes to piracy.......

I can see both sides of the argument.
Yes pirate DVD's to hurt the industry, and the big boys are always gonna be the last to be affected. But at the same time, £40 (before food, petrol, parking etc) to see a film is ridiculous. The cost of non pirated DVD's is no better. If all these people/companies hadn't been raping the consumer for so long they wouldn't have this problem!

Very similar to the music industry and illegal downloads. People don't like having to pay £15 quid for an album when they only want one or two songs. All those years of the music industry ****ing over their customers are coming back to bite them in the ass. Do I have any sympathy for them..........do I ****!

most films still make a decent profit if good enough.
Avengers has taken $1.5 billion worldwide so far, while the last pirate film took over $1 billion too http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/
films I want to see in the cinema I will, and I only watch films online that I would not bother going to the cinema to see and so if not online I would just do without.

Films based on large budgets, obvious repeatitive film form and narrative, US centric and run as comdities by producers is killing cinema.

Get Pepsi out of the script meeting and we might have a decent Hollywood again.

Champagne and Cocaine filmaking.

The last thing I watched at the cinema was Phantom Menace 3D, one of the adverts before the start of the film showed an empty old cinema, dusty and full of cobwebs with only a couple of people in it. This was showing us the effect piracy was having on the cinema and hinting if it doesn't stop cinemas maybe a thing of the past.

I nearly choked on my popcorn laughing, they are blaming low viewing figures on pirate movies? It's more likely to be caused by the price to get in. I took my son (and it was quite empty), it cost £25 (1 adult, 1 child, 3d glasses and food) to watch a film. This is what I think is killing the cinema. If we went on 'Orange Wednesday' it would have been full.

I know there is the argument that piracy can increase the legitimate viewing price but its not strong enough for me. I think you also need to look at how good the home tv set up is these day's. Even us working class have 42inch TV's, BluRay etc, all this removes the need for the cinema. And don't worry about the big boys profits, what they lose at the cinema is made through DVD's, online Rentals and TV movie channels.

jabbawokkie: you right about the smiles on their faces, cinema is a fun outing :D

ponchobelt: spot on about the smaller companies, imagine releasing you own film and losing money because people watch a cheaper pirate version.

Most of you are right, we do feel ripped off, and as Star Wars fans we all know what its like to be milked of our hard earned cash

another thing ,i think you should get told the actual time the film starts ,so if you want you dont have to watch all the trailers .i swear down it showed about 5 films then showed em again in a short advert .i bet it was over half hour before film started

You see, i think people stoppped going to the cinema because of the cost, i used to go with my mates all the time, even when we could get the dvdrip off the internet.

but now, like above its £50-£60 to take the family, its a joke and i wont pay it, i admit i watch pirate films, and if i really like them i buy the bluray.

so essentially if i didnt watch pirate i wouldnt spend the money on the bluray.

i would rather take my kids to alton towers or the zoo or camping than spend £60 for 1hr 30mins of a film that is most likely going to be **** and the food awful.

Well said Weas. I have 4 kids so a trip to the cinema on a Saturday afternoon including sweets and popcorn and maybe a red and blue slushy is close to £90 so its VERY rarely we go. Id prefer to wait a few weeks or months for a film and buy the original DVD for £15.

Cinema prices were on the rise before pirating became an issue. They keep bunging on extra after extra its like booking a flight these days. Ill pay to watch a decent movie at the cinema, but they are so few and far between these days I go maybe once every 3 months.

They have the power to reduce prices and people will go back. Orange Wednesday is the only night most people bother as thats when its realistic and affordable.

Yeah if they think charging £8 for a drink and some popcorn on top of £17 for the ticket is reasonable, they need a reality check.

It's the same as football - clubs moaning they have no money and having to charge thousands of pounds a year for season tickets. They don't HAVE to pay footballers 100k a week, and they don't need to pay actors 5 million per film. Why don't they take a look at their expenditure before they blame the paying customer. It's completely unsustainable.

Cinema's apparently only make money from the popcorn, sweets and drinks. Think I read somewhere the ticket price basically goes to the film distributor which is why it's quite expensive.

Shame really. I remember going to the cinema on a Sunday night and it would cost £3.60 and £1 for a drink... then again it was my student days :D

I went to see promethious in 3d when I went back to the City & it was like £15, almost spat my dummy I can tell you, as £15 is just taking the piss & I will not bother in future, it was like £10 when Avatar came out & I thought that was a total rip off even though the film was mentally good, I also used to frequent the flicks about once a month, but thats dropped to about twice a year & its all down to the admission costs, & for the food - do me a favour £6 to £8 for popcorn, did any of you see that food program where bloomental tries to make foods more interesting & was at a cinema?? - he got slaughtered by one of the bosses (right knob head he was 2) for breaking one of the popcorn boxes as it costs 20 X's as much as the actual popcorn which BTW costs (wait for it) - 1p per portion to produce FACT!

I always sneak food in as I simple will NOT pay what they are asking unless they have a Hagen'das counter :D

Piracy killing the cinema - pull the other one its got bell's on

On a more pleasant note I live in the middle of no where & 13 miles away (nearest small town & cinema) they have a traditional movie theatre/cinema which has a balcony/stalls & they only charge about £6 for an adult ticket & £4 for a child & I take my family there, only one screen, but boy did the memorys come flooding back first time I went when the ice cream lady came out half way through the film to sell goodies, first time I went one of the kids wanted a drink so I gave her a fiver, was I shell shocked when she came back with £4 change & a bottle of pop  talk about pleasantly surprised.

No 3D no multi screens no super surround sound, but it feels right & I love it, they can take Vue & the big gun cinemas & shove them & there pricing where the sun don't shine.

Oh & large popcorn is £2 there

not that it much of a like for like because of rent, rates etc, but to give an idea of some costs of screening a film, All The Cool Stuff holds a Single Screen License, allowing us to screen films subject to approval.

The license cost £150, then we have to pay a hire of the film (which most of the time is a DVD/ Blu Ray sent out, but it's around £80) and then either a flat fee for screening or 10% of the ticket fee - whichever is the greater (the fee will depend on the studio, but from memory, Paramount as an example was £150).
It does not sound big money, but over several screens with several screenings a day - even if there are no punters - it is a fair bit. Add staff wages, maintaining equipment, rent etc, no wonder they charge the earth

with three kids and a wife..plus the price of admission and all the food..............I have to practically take out a loan. We watch alot at home and have Netflix for all the old movies and B-movies.

when i was at school it was a pound to get in cannon in doncaster ,bout 2.50 at odeon and just before film was due to start curtains would come down and some rough looking chick would come round selling ice cream. We would have been to pick and mix round corner before we went in ,it waso cheap most of the sweets used to fall in your pockets ,how good of shop was that

I took 2 of my little ones to the Cinema today to see Ice Age 4 in 3D. We we over £60 by the time we had a Slush Puppy each. One of the brats had a medium pop corn and the other had 2 small tubs of Ice Cream. We also shared a bag of sweets that were like £4 that we have gotten else where for just over a quid but we had a nice couple of hours together. Its still a giant ripoff tho. 8)
