Geostorm

Hmm... not too sure how to review this one as it certainly wasn't sh*t, but it wasn't great either! Maybe its just a bit Meh...
Conceptually it made sense and the acting was good, the cinematography was great as well. The whole first half was pretty decent and the second not great at all... the biggest issue for me was the CGI. Maybe one for the DVD market if you've got a decent sized TV...

We saw this last night...for me it was the 4th trip to the cinema this week...and I may well be there again before the weekend is out (repeat Blade Runner 2049)...

Geostorm was the type of film we thought was worth a try at the cinema...but for me, it was quite poor - fell way short despite being a good idea. A pity...

Also saw Atomic Blonde recently (not what I typically would watch but better than I was expecting)

Saw Thor: Ragnarok yesterday. Really enjoyed it- similar vibe to GOTG 1.

Kong Scull Island - Thought it was alright, thought Tom Hiddleston was a bit ropey. 6/10

Logan - Really injoyed this film, thought it was tinkering on the realms of a soft horror. Best X-Men film yet. 8/10

Everest - considering it's true story makes it a good film, although it's filmed a bit like a documentary which I'm never that sure about. The last hour saves it for sure, because it's so horrific. 7/10

Exodus Gods and Kings - Christian Bail being his usual grumpy self, that said it's a solid performance and as long as you don't expect to much it's watchable, if that makes sense. :? His Mrs helps you get through the plot fillers I guess. :lol: 6/10

London Has Fallen - Don't bother my eyes were bleeding 10 minutes in, why do they make these films? 3/10

Mission Impossible Rogue Nation - Thought it was alright actually, Simon Peg a bit annoying not really sure why he's in it. Rebecca Ferguson is good and worth watching it just for her. Bare in mind it's the only MIssion Impossible film I've watched for 15 years. 7/10

This series of films aren't that bad, especially the later 2 or 3, my opinion!
But I ask the same question every time that we watch these about Simon Peg, I don't know how he's so "big" now?
I assume he's cast for the comedy element, but it's not needed in these films, is it?

Yeah I don't get it, thing is he's a talented actor but he's fallen into the trap of playing the same part in big films. This is ok if your Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt and the film is made for you.

Watched the new Mad Max thought it was excellent, Tom Hardy really good, definitely worth a watch - 8/10

Watched Rise Of The Footsoldier 3 the other day....Thought it was a good film (very violent though so viewer descretion be advised)

The two previous Rise Of The Footsoldier films focused on Carlton Leech a well known football hooligan from the dark days of football about his story from the terraces to 'underworld' and his involvement with Tony Tucker and Pate Tate (the Rettenden Range Rover shootings)...

Part 3 focused on Pat Tate (played by Craig Fairbrass who originally played Tate in the two previous films)

The film starts off a few years before he paired up with Tony Tucker and Carlton Leech but does eventually get to the Range Rover shootings....

Some good cameo appearance by Billy Murray (The Bill)...Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays)...Jamie Foreman (actor son of London 60's gangster/enforcer Freddie Foreman)...Paddy Docherty (well known Gypsy and celeb Big Brother) just to name a few....

Recent movies I've caught include Jigsaw (better than I was expecting), The Bad Batch complete and utter ***** (stay well clear!) and then the new historical drama Tulip Fever. Amazing what a difference when you have a story and people who can act! Strong cast including one of my favourite actors, Christoph Waltz, Zack Galifianakis, Judi Dench was her usual quality self and there are plenty of other decent performances.

Next up is another viewing of Blade Runner 2049...a damn fine work that one, catch it at the cinema while you still can.

went and watched bladerunner 2049 on Saturday

really really good! I do like the original but had not seen it in years and wanted to watch it before the new one but it didn't matter at all

its visually great to look at and the sound/soundtrack is good, very similar to Vangelis who did the original

if I was to moan about one thing its 2 and a half hours long (too long for me to be sat in the cinema)

Justice League

I have mentioned many times before that I'm no fan of Marvel films, so I wasn't too sure if this latest DC offering would be any better... well, it kind of is... a little at least.
The main 'heroes' are all pretty decent actors and seem to have some depth of character too. Effects are generally OK with one massive and quite painful omission; the bad guy - Steppenwolf. The CGI of this guy was awful, like some over colourized cartoon.. as realistic as Rodger Rabbit!
Anyway, it didn't ruin the film, it was watchable and actually quite fun...

If you're into Marvel and DC I'm sure you'll love it, if like me its all a bit MEH for you, maybe just wait till it's on DVD or Sky

Logan
In order to try and wash away the mess that was Bright, I decided that despite not being an X-Men fan I'd watch Logan to bring me back to reality...
Wolverine (IMO) was a decent film and overall I enjoyed it, so felt pretty safe with this. Unfortunately this effort was just kind of depressing and really not a well made film at all. Terrible acting (oddly) from the two main leads, Stephen Merchant was as comical as ever with his accent despite being in a straight role and the story stuttered and meandered to a painfully obvious and sluggish conclusion. The best thing was the young girl who Logan is pretty much forced to adopt... she held her character well and was pretty believable as the rabid dog she embodied...

Once again though, this film is really not recommended

Patriots Day
Absolute cracker... given some of the utter dross I've sat through recently, this was a really great change of pace.
A pretty sensitive subject (Boston Marathon bombings) that has a really personal feel (as a regular marathon runner) to me... I thought they handled it well, gave it a story as we'll as the main facts interwoven without turning it into a running around shooting everything that moves silliness it could've become.
Not the best film I've ever seen, but so very much better than I expected; they did Boston proud

Table 19

An odd mix of actors & actresses that you'll know from all over the place, but with the exception of Lisa Kudrow its unlikely you can name them...
It was kinda funny for 70% of the time, the last third though all got a bit reflective and meaningful... it didn't get heavy as such, just lost its fun.

You'd have to be pretty close to the bottom of the barrel to set aside time to watch it, but as a background bit of nonsense it was OK

Darkest Hour - Definitely worth a watch, great cast and all with strong performances. It's good that this has been made close to Dunkirk as you see all the bureaucracy behind that film. I am fascinated by World War 2 which makes it easy to enjoy, definitely an 8/10 for me.

Edge of Tomorrow, watched that last night, 3rd time iv'e seen it and it's just great.

Before that several days ago I watched Oblivion, amazing film, fantastic soundtrack with stunning visuals, and a great plot.

This must be Tom Cruise week. :lol:

Two cinema visits in the last 10 days or so throwing out two very different films and two very different reviews too:

Black Panther
The latest of the Marvel universe offerings and (if) anyone who has read my previous musings will have noted I'm no fan of Marvel, but I was suckered in to mainstream reviews hailing this as something different and something brilliant.
Its ok, its not brilliant, one of the few I'd sit through a second time, but certainly not a film I'd actively buy on BluRay etc. Generally poor acting throughout with the exception of the two main females. Costumes were decent and that's about where it ends.

I, Tonya
In contrast to the above, this stands out as one of the best films I've seen in years.
Perfect storytelling of a tale you couldn't make up. Beautifully shot, very clever and accurate wardrobe and set dressings.
Simply breathtaking performances from all four main cast members, with Alyson Janney stealing the show.
Utterly brilliant!

Trust me the visuals and scenery in that film are spectacular, I can imagine 4k would just be incredible. 8)

I saw a lot of guff about how amazing it was but I didn't see how it would be any better than the tonnes and tonnes and tonnes and tonnes of other super hero movies. Bar the fact it has a mainly/exclusively black cast, why would this super hero movie be ANY different to four or five other superhero movies we get served up every single ******* year!?

Good to know I can save my time and not bother.


I did drag the missus to see Journeys' end, much to her delight. It's not a bad film, very slow, but surprisingly not gruesome at all. If anything I think it underplayed the brutality and savageness of the first world war. If anything I was a little underwhelmed by it. Maybe it was just trying to be a film about personal journeys that happened to be set in WW1 rather than a film about soliders in WW1 and how it affects them, it did feel like a missed opportunity to me though.

Finally watched Hacksaw Ridge last night. Superb film and knowing it's a true story, makes it even better. What these guys went through for their countries is truly remarkable.

Born on The Fourth of July
I'd watched this when it was released and had a memory that it was decent... I was beyond disappointed when I watched it again with fresh eyes. It's not aged well, the acting is good, but the Direction (and yes, I do like Oliver Stone) was terrible, the story made little to no sense, the pacing was appalling and the whole thing was disjointed... If you have good memories of this, please don't watch it again, keep the memory alive!
