Random question I thought someone might be able to answer! I want to replace a wall light, so bought a new one, it just has one brown and one blue wire, no earth. But I have removed the old one and for some reason it has two sets of wires? 2 blue, 2 brown, and 2 earth. What is the second set for? Can I just insulate the 'spare' set of wires and connect one set?

Sounds like there was a previous fitting there before at some point and didnt remove old cabling. We have loads of redundant cables behind our walls

have you got 2 wall lights as the other wires maybe going to that one :?: they usually link wall lights so that they have 2 sets of wires except for the last one that will only have 1 set of wires

Ah yes that might be right, there is another one that I haven't taken off yet, both activated by the same switch.

Sounds like the 2 wall lights share a circuit isolated to a one way switch, but I'm far from an expert, just have a wife that likes to change things in the house a lot!

Wait and see if a qualified sparky chirps in Edd, as you can end up tripping the power box if you wire up wrong, or worse! Not worth the risk with electrics.

Be safe mate!

the previous light fitting may have had multiple bulbs and needed two sets, you can just cover them up and tuck them away mate, the new light should have an earth clip where you wrap or clip the earth wire to it?

or you can trace the wires back and remove them mate if you didnt want to clip and electric tape them.

If they are not needed just screw them into one of those
connecting blocks and poke it back in the wall.
