My laptop is dead on it's arse and I need a new one but i'm a tight get so want the best I can get for as little money as possible. All I really need is internet, a CD drive to run Photoshop, some storage for editing photos, which doesn't need to be huge. If I can rip and burn CD's that will be a bonus.

Can anyone recommend anything?

Cheers guys

I'm pretty sure all new laptops come with windows 10 and if they don't you be prompted everyday to upgrade to it.

Which i ignore

Yep all new laptops come with 10.

I just dont like change

The wife had some fancy touch screen laptop that went back to pc world umpteen times. Pile of ****. I loved my old vaio but its so infested I cant even run Chrome

If your old one is just full of crap or virused, you could just reinstall Windows and see if it's any better.

You may be able to upgrade the RAM and switch to an SSD drive to give some perfomance improvements too.

I personally love Windows 10, and it's not touch screen oriented like Windows 8 was, you can switch between tablet or desktop modes whenever you want.

I love Apple in fact I own both an iMac desktop and macbook pro (as well as iPhones, iPads and iPods) and would never go back to a PC but there newer laptops don't come with a CD drive so no good for what requested by the original poster, I would recommend one of there're older models that do come with the disk drive or getting an external disk drive.

Mrs has a Macbook Air which is quite smart. Way too pricey for me though. Can older laptops be bought somehwere with a warranty of sorts?

Out of interest why do you need a CD drive for Photoshop? It doesn't come on CD any more. Optical media is a legacy format and just adds weight and size to laptops, just buy a USB one for £20 for the occasional time you need it.

As above get one with an SSD (solid state drive) and a good amount of RAM, those two things make the biggest difference to performance. don't be fooled by sales people saying "but this hard disk is bigger!" they're just trying to clear old stock. Do not buy one without an SSD.

Windows 10 is great, I skipped 8 because of the shitty Start Menu etc but 10 is basically just like 7.

my vote would be to save up a bit longer and get a Mac... haven't used a Windows machine (outside of my office) in c15 years.

I have a Windows Surface and love it to bits. I was sick of needing a laptop and a tablet, but with this you get both. Yes the screen is smaller than most laptops, but the convenience of having a tablet that is also a fully functionally PC is unbeatable. It has a SSD so starts up in seconds, USB, micro SD for expanded memory, and HDMI out to plug into TV. Comes with a little pen which I initially dismissed as useless, but It is so responsive you'll find yourself using it a lot. It travels so easily abroad with you, and I've even mounted it to my dash in my cab. The ultimate all rounder.

i too have a surface (dont get one with a dvd drive, just buy a usb one) there is a ton of options out there for you, but the 2 in 1 hybrids are by far the most popular, maybe look at the lenovo yoga or something like that.

I got my surface 3 from amazon wareghouse, apparently it had a scratch on it...still cant find it, cost me £300.

Interesting stuff guys. I only really need a disc drive to rip cds and run my copy of photoshop. I'm not savvy on tech at all. If there's some way to run PS without a drive that would do me.

just copy all the files off the current CD to a folder and keep them safe, CD/DVD is becoming redundant due to size limits now, and with dropbox ect you can just store them in the cloud :)

like i said though a portable USB one will cost no more than £10 just keep it in a cupboard, it just means your laptop can stay nice and thin/loght

I'm a bit confused about needing the cd drive to 'run' photoshop, do you just mean to install it??

If so, you can copy the files with the old PC to a flash drive and use them from there.

Other thing woth noting is that if you do go for a mac you won't be able to use your current version of Photoshop, will have to buy it afresh
