Vectis 26th & 27th May

I dread to think what prices these will go for

Wow, that's a blast from the past!
I remember the detonator and gear from my collection. I don't remember the boat though. Must have been a hand me down or jumble sale. Still great to see though, and fresh as the day they were made! Wonderful

Are the prices holding (or continuing to rise) simply because another 10, 20 or 50 people in the world have turned their attentions to Palitoy collecting?

I think this is at least part of the reason. I can't be bothered with 99% of Facebook stuff but I think some of the Vectis stuff has turned up on there as well?

It's worth remembering that some of the recently sold examples would have been counted with the known to exist examples (like Craigs). I don't keep a record of items coming up for sale but i'd guess that over the last 12-24 months we've seen something like these coming up for sale publicly:

3 Luke Skywalker - all on forums, none sold on Vectis or ebay, 1+ pending on Vectis
5 Chewbacca - 2 @ other auctions (one ended up on ebay), 2 or 3 on forums, 1 graded one on ebay, none sold on Vectis yet, 1+ pending on Vectis
4+ Ben Kenobi - 1 or 2 on ebay (1 unsold so far I think), 2 or 3 on forums, 1 sold on Vectis, 1+ pending on Vectis
5+ Leia - 1 other auction (crushed bubble), 4 sold on Vectis but none in the last 12 months, 1+ pending on Vectis
4+ Han Solo - 1 other auction (ended up on ebay), 1 other on ebay, 2 (?) on forums, 1 pending on Vectis
6+ Jawa - other auctions (faded, ended up on ebay), 4 sold on Vectis +1 VCJ, none in last 12 months, none pending
8+ Darth Vader, 1 other auction, 1 ebay.com (AFA80), 6+ sold on Vectis, 1+ pending on Vectis

More common 12 backs, at least 8-10+ I'd have thought.

20 backs - less common funnily enough. 2 or 3 of each sold on Vectis, many more LWX, no Power Droids, 1 of each pending at Vectis, probably 2 or 3 of each on ebay, a couple from other auctions.

ESB characters on 30 backs - probably 5+ of the less uncommon cards, 3+ of the uncommon cards (mostly Vectis I think) some have come up on ebay but can only remember the more common).

Can probably add 1 of everything from Action Force toys, some ended up on ebay. Obviously more would have sold in other private sales.

I'm sure I'm badly underestimating what's come up on ebay, others watch those much more closely than me so can chip in with those.

Quite interesting that the spread is still pretty much in line with what you'd expect in terms of rarity. So nothing has gone from common to rare (Jawa  ), or rare to common (although there have been more Chewbacca's than might be expected). Perhaps Luke Skywalker is now the undisputed rarest 12 back (always was?).

Thanks for posting your observations! Really appreciate you posting that up. Recording data like this is extremely important even if it's not 100% as it helps everyone build up a better idea of what is out there, where it's coming from and where it's going (you may well be right about the Facebook people picking these up).

PS: It would be interesting to know if all of Craig's stuff was already on the "known to exist" list or not, I'd certainly not seen his name come up before he joined here and then sold through Vectis but I would imagine some of the older guys would have been aware of him (but not necessarily what he had?).

Sad to see all the sales information gone from this thread: http://www.starwarsforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=25157 :( (Hate it when everything is replaced with SOLD)

I thought there had been a Luke on eBay and maybe one on vectis too (the same one possibly).

I don't think we can call any palitoy 12/20bk 'rare' anymore (unless we get into the 12a/b/c thing).

Wow those Action Man sets are amazing. My eldest brother had the Sabotage set and I used to play with it.

12 backs aren't rare at all there is just unbelievable demand for them at the minute.

Cheers Joe. I was curious about the actual numbers myself tbh. I know we all knew there had been a lot for sale recently but I was actually quite shocked about how many there's been especially considering I'll have missed a load of the ebay sales. The total number of 12/20 and 30's must be in the 150-200 range at least

On that basis alone I think we can say demand is holding up at the moment

One thing it does make you realise IMO is that some cards that were perceived as rare, are maybe not so.
Also the 12 back characters on 30 bk cards still haven't really surfaced, apart from the Ben from Craig's sale. This is considered the more 'common', I'd love to see a few more appear.......

As I think many have said, rare is a relative term.

A 12 back C3P0 is rarer than a 65 back Klaatu. But that doesn't make it rare.

even before all these figures turned up, it was pushing it to say Luke or Chewbacca were 'rare' in any absolute sense of the word. Loads of collectors had them in their collections and those were just the ones publically known.

Difficult to buy...yes as people weren't letting them go, and what sales did happen, happened privately. I know I helped at least 6 people complete the first 20.

There have been times in the past when lots have turned up for sale in a short space of time. I can remember when there were 3 Lukes for sale on eBay within a month of each other. Think we had the same with Chewbacca a short while ago.

What's happening now is pretty much the same as happened before, just on a larger scale.

Believe it or not the same has happened with 30 backs. in 2004 I bought over 30.

I'm not sure what current events would do to the rarity order of each 12/20/30 back figure compared to each other. But it has certainly gone some way to challenging the use of the word rare. Which in my mind is ultimately used as a marketing gimmick.

found this searching the net

I really hope lot 5061 isn't purchased by the ugraders. The water damaged box of sealed mocs

I was talking about that with a collector only yesterday. While it's true that all of the cardbacks are ****ed and if there was ever
a case for grading the loose figures, then this is it, I think this is a unique piece as it is and should be left that way.

Remember Traci Emin's bed? It's like a modern day Palitoy toy collector art installation homage!

Looks like an expensive garage leak!

The figure stuck together back to back - I assume this is just how they were packed (back to back) and not that they were some kind of toy fair display or anything more interesting?

I would even love to own that Luke Bespin MOC that looks like it's been through a washing machine 8)

That lot of damaged card backs looks like the ultimate resealing job! I'd love to get my hands on them and bring these back to their former glory but feel that the price is going to end up being pretty steep for them as it sounds like there's a lot of interest ( and the fact that a video clip was even made).

Best of luck for anyone going for them. :D

Nice of them to put up a video and some pics are up for the 26th at last!

One thing I did notice is there's no Vectis auction listing for these dates at Invaluable, maybe they'll be added later?! preferred being able to watch the auction and found their site easier all around but oh well probably saves on some fees!?...
