I didn't have the Landspeeder toy as a child, but it was the first boxed Palitoy item I bought as an adult, around 20 years ago from Jim 'Mr Star Wars' Stevenson.

Here are my Kenner and Palitoy Land Speeders. These days most people seem to be aware of the most obvious difference (other than the boxes!) between the two toys, namely the bonnet / hood. The Kenner version has an opening bonnet with a button at the front to operate the feature. This does add a little extra play value to the toy, but personally I've never really liked it much as it's not something we ever saw in the film, and I think the button is obtrusive and ugly. By contrast the Palitoy Land Speeder does not have this opening bonnet feature, and hence has what I personally consider to be a better aesthetic, with smoother, more movie-accurate lines.

However, the bonnet is not the only difference between the two versions. There is another major one which fewer people seem to be aware of, and that is the silver sides to the speeder. In the Kenner version these are made from moulded shiny silver plastic, and means the toy can be very easily disassembled if required. However, back in the 1970's when Palitoy was looking to save money when manufacturing their versions of the toys, just like they did with the original Star Wars playsets, they found a way to economise whilst making the Palitoy Land Speeder in addition to removing the opening bonnet feature. They also changed the silver sides. Although they might look very similar to the Kenner ones at first glance, the silver sides on the Palitoy version are actually stickers, and they are extremely well attached too! Disassembling a Palitoy Land Speeder is no easy task without risking damage to the stickers, as the glue attaching them is very strong indeed. In order for the upper and lower parts of the speeder to be separated, the stickers must be unstuck from at least one of the pieces, and I've never been brave enough to do it, as I'd hate to damage the toy or the stickers. Luckily, my speeder still works just fine so I haven't had to, but I have been asked to try to repair someone else's broken Palitoy one before now, and I didn't dare pull the pieces apart as they were so tightly stuck together.

As for the boxes? Well, the Palitoy one will always be my favourite because that's the version I had as a boy, and I still think it's the more beautiful, but the Kenner one looks nice too :)

If anyone's interested in seeing all 6 sides of the Palitoy box and even more pics of the Palitoy speeder, you can find them on the old TOTW thread here: https://www.starwarsforum.co.uk/threads/swtotw-week-31-2018-part-1-2-land-speeder.37462/

@Snaketibe , it's probably been asked before but are the kenner inserts rhe same as the palitoy ones?
I've never done a side by side comparison, but yes, they appear to be basically the same size, shape and cut-out. If there are any differences, they're pretty minor. The boxes themselves are identically sized, so it would make sense for the inners to match. Hope that helps.

I have fond memories of the Landspeeder as a child.

Had no idea about the 2 kenner versions (open bonnet and sonic controlled) until I picked up a collectors book mid 90's.

Glad I didn't know they existed as a kid as I'd have never been able to get one!

Cool that you had the landspeeder when you was a kid (y) thanks for sharing this beautiful boxes in the thread ;) do you have all the landspeeder boxes that you want now or are you hunting more boxes with the landspeeder ?

Thanks, as I desperately need a insert.

I never knew about the differences with the opening hatch at the front. I must admit i do prefer the palitoy version, as mentioned it looks alot cleaner and more movie accurate. I think if i ever add one of these to my collection it'll be that one🙂

Some great examples here guys...love it👍
