Just received this off eBay. I knew it didn't work so wasn't too fussed but if you ever wondered how 40 year old batteries fair!! Here's your answer

Still, pretty chuffed to have these 2 in the collection now. My 4 year old is playing them to death

I just got a snowspeeder in the other day and two of the terminals were corroded. Got them cleaned off with some vinegar and a little bit of 2000 grit sandpaper and now it works fine.

As already mentioned good clean with white vinegar and wire wool and good as new, cannot believe the seller did not check the battery area and dump them , but fun to rejuvenate back to full health

I agree! A mate of mine has a childhood toy nostalgia cabinet and pride of place is given to a D cell Ever Ready battery. Looks so cool
