Yes I love that photo from 85 Toy fair Catalogue. I think that piece is either a protomold or a hardcopy and the cape is quite a bright blue whereas my cape is a more light blue/purple. I know James Gallo had the protmold and hard copy (he sold them a while ago) but there was no bright blue cape. I dont know if that piece has turned up in any collections yet. I'd certainly love to own it.
The 85 Toy fair catalogue is my inspiration for my POTF focus. Dark Robes Anakin, Dark brown Romba, Blue Cape Lando. Although all Protomolds or Hard copies. I'd love to find the metallic coloured EV-9D9 protomold one day.

Ok here we go. It was pretty tough to decide between certain pieces even though I only have 9 items to choose from but here you go anyway:
5. Series 1 Unproduced Prototype Box Flat
I believe only about 5 or 6 of these box flats survived and one of those was lost in transit to me some time ago.) This box flat represents one of the final stages before production began. Strangely, this box flat has a sellophane window on the front of the box which shows that Kenner obviously considered a window on the shadow box to provide further protection to the bubbles. In all honesty, it probably would have provided little protection. The only other change to be made now to the box would be the introduction of the hanger tab style punch.

4. ESB Series 2 Bepin Set - Quality Control Sample
As far as I know there are only 2 QC Sample 3 packs in the world. This one and a Star Wars series 2 Creature Set. This is the only version with a sign off sticker which as you can see has been signed off by Don Huler. (11th Sept 1981)

3. Series 1 Kenner Employee Prototype Android Set
This set represents a stage very close to production where only fairly minor changes needed to be made. Such changes included the adaptation of the single round punch to the better known and more functional Hanger Tab style. This insured standardisation across the Star Wars action figure line. Another feature to be removed was the black bar along the top of the window which was seen to obscure the view of the title for the "Android Set." There is evidence of marker pen on the box in the bottom left corner and on the top right of the outer window. It is not known where this originates from or whether it was done at Kenner or afterwards. I would suspect afterwards. This set originates from a previous Kenner employee.

2. ESB White Prototype Engineering Pilot Test Package - Rebel Set
The purpose of this packaging style was to test the dimensions of the box prior to printing. The box has no text and the bubble/ window is hand glued without the standard kenner production "Waffle Pattern." This set is one of 2 known examples in the world. Similar prototypes were produced for the other sets in this third series run. (Imperial set and Bespin Set) These plain white packaged prototypes are also often referred to as Engineering Pilots.

1. ESB Series 1 - Canadian Imperial Forces Set
This particular set originates from Simpsons and it still has the price sticker on the side of the pack. Canadian 3 Pack sets are notably much more scarce than their US counterparts. In this case, as far as I can tell, only 2 examples of this set have surfaced so far and this is the nicer of the 2. The reason being, is that these sets were only available in small quantities to certain department stores who signed up to the department store programme. There are a number of key differences between the US and Canadian sets.

Just looked through this thread and have a noob question - in mark yeos thread on page 1 what are the card backs with the figure area and figure name in white? Some kind of foreign thing?

Jedisearcher - thanks buddy. the carded figs in Marks photos are Canadian sears exclusives. They are vacu-sealed/ shrink wrapped figures. Very cool and very rare.

Truly amazing "Top 5 favs", alot of variety and just goes to show someones fav doesnt need to be a POTF Anakin ect. Will post my top 5 later this week including Original ESB Storyboard, blue tack and pin holes none of that spreedsheet ROTJ stuff hehe.

Don't knock your Mecanno Yoda it is very, very desirable. Most Meccano's are rare and fetch a premium over a lot of MOC's. Youu only have to look at ebay to see they don't come up very often and when they do command a hefty price.
The pieces in this thread are truly awesome, but IMO so is your Yoda
I'm late to the game here, and just remember you wanted the stories behind how/why these items have the status in our collections that they have but, we'll start with these 2 little critters
2 different scale versions of unproduced prototype Salacious Crumb plushs. The story behind
the larger scale one is that I remember in 94/95 seeing pics of it in Tomarts AFN magazine and
being floored by how cool it was (imo). At that time, me being a fairly unconnected and new to the internet
collector,I never believed that there would be a chance in hell of my ever getting such a piece. Fast forward several years later much knowledge(both about the items and workings of the hobby) learned, and many items gained; Jordan announces that he'll be brokering the sale of the Tomart SW archives, low and behold, what's on the list of items on the chopping block... The very same plush Crumb that sparked my initial interest in prototypes in the first place. I worked out a payment plan that was acceptable to all involved, and picked it up in person from Tom Tumbusch at a small convention in NJ. The 2nd and smaller plush Crumb here came to me after a few years of talking on and off with the original designer for them. She was also selling many of her plush items thru Jordan at CV, but had brought the Crumb just for me. About an hour of talking about her time at Kenner and some haggleing between us, and the smaller one was ready to be reunited with the larger version.\
The Uzay Imperial Gunner was my first Uzay figure(and among the first bootlegs I ever bought), it is also the piece that sparked my love for cheesy bootleg goodness that now is the only thing I still care about actively collecting. Money wise, it's probably the lowest value of the items I'm mentioning here, but for its lasting impact on my collecting habits, it's truly the most valuable piece I own.... Far cooler than any Kenner figure I dare say.....
I got it at a local toy show, there was a dealer who had the Gunner and a Blue Stars(I also ended up getting my BS from him too eventually) Those were the first bootlegs I ever saw/paid attention to. The same day I saw those, I ended up buying a much lower priced Hungarian Leia (moc) and 2 unarticulated Polish figures (a Luke and a Barada..if memory serves) Those were the first bootlegs I owned. A few weeks later at another toy show, I bought the Gunner from him and my current addiction was born.....

Not much of a personal story other than that it's cool and rare, and that I'd missed the only other known sale of one(loose w. cardback) by a couple of days in the Toy Shop magazine days. The sellers story is cool as he picked it up for the equivalent of about .75 cents at a small store while in Poland, and just kept it as a memory of the time there. He puts it on Ebay, and was amazed at how much interest it drummed up.
Last but not least is probably one of the most iconic pieces in my collection, for more than one reason(it's in the story) as well the story of how it came to be in my hands. The Uzay carded Head Man:
How it was acquired: 2 well known dealers went over to Turkey (and a few other countries) and bought up every bootleg figure they could find. In their hunt they brought back 2 MOC Uzay Head Man figures. One was sold at (I believe) Kane Co toy show, by one of the dealers, the other sat in the other dealers private collection for years. This dealer is done selling and starts to move his vast collection out to another prominent dealer, I happen to have an item that particular dealer wants from me( a J-Slot Rocket Fett). He offers me the MOC Head Man, and 5 other MOC Uzays in trade for this piece. I, realizing the glass ceiling that prototype collecting had for me because of my lack of "political clout" in that segment of the hobby, and that my at that point small but much enjoyed bootleg collection, and growing interest in more bootlegs represented a wide open space in the hobby because very few people were actively focusing on bootlegs at the time.I took the trade, and at that point other than the plush Crumbs above, have never really pushed into the vintage prototype realm on any grand level. That decision and deal changed the direction of my collecting habits and hobby involvement forever.
So there are my top 5 vintage items.

I would have just paid for the Uzays, but the trade was proposed, and I was honestly very underwhelmed by the RF as an item, once the initial "I've got real RocketFett!!" buzz wore off. So underwhelmed that I didn't think twice, and have never...not once....looked back and thought that I didn't get the better end of that deal. It was a real game changer for me.
And Tundra....I think that Crumb is very punk rock. He's just a little mischievous troublemaker, like most punks I know. :lol:
