The LEGO Corner

Sorry but silly question time, Does modern lego have lots of big bits in it cos the finish looks so smooth on that shuttle nose and central wing and I can't see many 4x1 etc apart from on the side wings ? Figures look amazing and much better than my red and white spacemen.

Don't know about the shuttle itself but there generally aren't loads of big bits. Lots of unique parts definitely, but there's still loads of building in these sets if that's what you're getting at.

And yes, the MFs have moved on since the Space Lego men, but they are still very cool imho :D

^ the parts and finish depend on the price bracket of set.

For the most part, higher end system and Ultimate collectors sets are brick built, the nose of the shuttle above is brick built made up of 14 parts rather than 1 large one.

There are a lot of specialist pieces made in sets these days but the larger ones only really stand out in the junior and smaller sets, when they are made for larger sets they tend to be for specific details, like a cockpit, whereas in a set like the city police station a number of the walls are built from larger bricks. if you are keen on the big Star Wars sets and others of similar price and size then you end up with a lot of brick building, sometimes the mid sections and frames of the system sets use technics which can be larger, but utilise very intricate connection methods. Check out the finishers on a few of the other sets like the Sand Crawler and Red Five X-Wing, all built with small parts.

Cheers for the heads up lads, I would love to buy a falcon, Death Star or Star Destroyer and spend months building a bit each week but they're so expensive. I'll keep a look out on the net for a cheapish second hand one.

Not so much with the UCS stuff but the rest of the range normally becomes available at the end of its run at clearance prices. I like to save my money for vintage so I'm a tight git and won't buy unless I can get about 25-40% off which is very achievable. OK so you don't get them when they come out, but it's a challenge to get them nice and cheap :D

Last few I've bought cheap I've bought doubles, one to make and one to chuck in the loft to sell in afew years. Even with loads of people trying their hand at lego investing, it's a pretty simple way of making afew quid to buy more stuff with!!

I built my death star over the course of a month and it was great fun.

I have the sandcrawler to build next so will take my time over that too 8)

Nice.

Is it much smaller than the original Shuttle T?
It is smaller than the UCS shuttle: 310mm from foot of landing gear to top of fin, 510mm wingspan in flight mode

The smooth finish on the externals are where blocks are used, the finish is the outer surface of the block.

Moving on... Check out fbtb.net for the firs tinpmage of the May the 4th UC Echo base set.

Or just click on this link

http://www.fbtb.net/

Not sure I'll go for this one as my boy has the 7879 Echo Base set along with some of the smaller sets so feel there's more than enough Hoth in the house already. Good set to get though if you don't have Echo Base already.

Thanks for the heads up! :D

Ian

Well that Echo set is a major disappointment. There's barely a thing there that hasn't been done before. Think they would have been far, far better off concentrating on the inside of Echo Base , the Ion Cannon and Shield Generator only. They've spread themselves too thin with all the add on bits and you get the overall effect of just a lot of loose, smaller sets.

This is one I will have no difficulty not buying.

Whilst I'm on: Gary, I'm still hunting for your last set but they seem to be thin on the ground. Well, non-fraudulent seller ones, at least!

Yeah I was hoping for much more with Echo base. Shame

And thanks. This will be the year I complete that street!! 8)

Hello, can anybody tell me if the Lego Storm Trooper FO figurine has been released in the UK yet and if it's possible to buy them as individual sets of 1,2 or 3 for example?.

I did Google but was surprised by how little came back in relation to the UK.

Thanks :).

^ do you mean this chap? http://brickset.com/sets/75114-1/First-Order-Stormtrooper If so then I don't think it is out yet, at least not at Lego shops.

The new Hoth base is coming in for some heavy criticism but it is a play set aimed at slightly older kids and in that regards it has everything needed. The last set of doors made were back in 2007 and the tauntaun with the last base was a few years ago now. So if people missed out then this is chance to get a one stop Hoth set. For me adding it to everything that has come before should give a very good base to display.

We still have two more UCS for Star Wars to come this year, Snowspeeder and Death Star.

Fair comment and it's easy to forget these are toys, But at £200 is this really aimed at kids? There's just not that many parents out there willing to splash that sort of money on a set like this, surely. If they'd come in at around the £140-150 mark I think you'd be right, but this lifts it out of the gift market and firmly into AFOL territory, I think.

I agree the price is pushing the boundary and I think if Lego had matched it price wise with the recent nijago temple, which was £175 then that would have been great, but they have tried to or are trying to set a new threshold.

That said if this is for older children 12+ then is it really much more than a games consol, certain items of clothing, maybe a watch or a mountain bike, tablet, mobile phone etc. Those are the sorts of big ticket birthday and Christmas presents that might typically be bought for that age range. That said my four year old is desperate for this set.....

Hi monkey_roo, hmm, no it wasn't that one I had in mind but that is severely tempting!.

I was after just the normal small Lego version.

:)

Won't be buying it, but I like the set design although they could've joined up the individual units so that the stand alone bits of machinery have something to attach to, and link them all together.
