After 1st viewing Average at best...Why do they keep coping scenes from OT ?

When Snoke Rey and Kylo are together that is a carbon copy of ROTJ when Luke , Vader and Emperor are together.
Kylo Ren " Join me Rey and we will rule the galaxy" Can't remember where I've heard that before !
The Scroll at the start of the film , last paragraph saying they have found the rebel base...copied the start of ESB ...... I really could go on

Can't believe this is the best they can come up with ! They should be making these films Brilliant...R1 is a perfect example !

Just got back, thought it was good and I enjoyed it, that being said there were a few points that annoyed me, but I enjoyed it more than TFA, and nowhere near as much as Rogue One. Here's my basic review of my highs and lows, not particularly in order of appearing in the film because I have shite memory when i'm tired...

Entering into the first scene after the opening crawl flying through the Rebel ships -- that was cool and different and made me smile. I''m also pretty sure if I remember right that the exact same music was also used from an OT film from right after the opening crawl ending when the camera starts scrolling down, that was neat I felt like I was about to watch an OT film.

Leia floating through space using the force -- .............

The general Hux's 'phone call' joke with Poe -- so Hux is a comedian now?, seemed like he was doing a bit of stand-up to me and intentionally trying to be funny, if Domhnall Gleeson intended to actually act that bit as Hux being serious then he did a bad job, and with Eddie from Bottom on the bridge too I felt like I was watching some **** British TV comedy.

The hot Jurassic Park bird sacrificing herself into the Star Destroyer at light speed -- absolute ****ing genius, you could hear a pin drop from the other side of the cinema, it was just a perfect suspense moment with stunning visuals, literally couldn't have made that any better.

The Chinese girl -- could not stand her and it actually ruined the film for me, found her really ****ing annoying and pointless, offered nothing to the plot accept for falling in love and rescuing some animals that nobody gives a **** about, she just simply did not need to be in this film. They made up a random main role just so they can throw in a person of another race, just to make Star Wars more diverse, if the role was somewhat important then fair enough but it was just purely forced.

The casino scene -- didn't feel like I was even watching Star Wars at all, I ****ing hated it, and to finish it off with that stupid animal rescue/racetrack race escape omg I just wanted to die, all of this completely took me out of the film which I was actually enjoying up until that point, and all just to 'rescue' Frankie Four Fingers who ended up shafting them anyway with his imaginary 5th finger. A good 15 or 20 mins utterly wasted which could have at least been used to give a little backstory to Snoke.

Finn says the word bastard?? -- well this is a first, is this film based on the Star Wars universe or Earth?, i'm confused!

Yoda -- I thought he looked really goofy like **** CGI to start with and I didn't like it, but then I realised he's an actual puppet.. I think?, and then he actually looked alright after a few seconds. But hang on what's this?, he's sparking off powerful lightning strikes and blowing **** up in the real physical world now?, where the **** has this little green **** been all these years when people needed him??

Snoke -- OMFG.. I LOVE Snoke, he's just pure evil and really sinister, his character is a really strong one unlike his torso which gets sliced open like butter, I was actually upset that he died because I was looking forward to seeing what pure evil he had in store for us, yet at the same time amazed because that scene was awesome, followed by a lightsaber battle with those guards which was just epic. And I thought the way Kylo covered up his intentions from Snoke by copying exactly what he was doing with his lightsaber was great, Snoke was so absorbed and focused on seeing Kylo take his next important step in getting stronger with the force by killing Rey, that he failed to notice/sense what was happening right next to him, I loved that part, I just think they should have waited until Episode 9 to do this.

The Porg's -- Really loved them, they did a great job in making you care about them, they added the perfect amount of humour to the film I thought, the part where Luke chucked his lightsaber and one of the Porgs is jumping up & down on the power button while another Porg is trying to look inside the end of the saber, was almost pissing myself laughing, great stuff!, and then making me feel bad because they wanted Chewie's food.

Force phone calls from across the galaxy -- I thought that part was kind of cool but then after like the 3rd imaginary Skype call between Kylo and Rey it was getting a bit boring and dragged out.

The gold Falcon dice -- they were Han's dice which came with the Falcon ship when he won it in a bet, they weren't in the Falcon cockpit in TFA nor were they reintroduced to it when Han got the ship back. Why are they all of a sudden hanging in the cockpit now?, where the **** did they come from?, nothing whatsoever was mentioned about them. A small yet annoying anomaly!

The parts where it explained about how Vader's melted helmet got into Kylo's possession, and how Maz acquired possession of Luke's saber in TFA -- no I don't remember those parts either.

Saw TLJ last night and as others have said it was almost too much to process. I enjoyed it without knowing immediately how i felt about it, if that makes sense. I read some of the spoiler free reactions on here first and that helped lower my expectations before i went in which i think helped.

Having mulled it overnight here are my two cents. First the annoying bits:

- Leia in space: all for her having force powers but that scene could have been done so much better
- DJ: If he is such a good a breaking out of places, why was he waiting around in jail?
- Holdo/Poe dynamic: Liked the tension but the whole mutiny thing was pointless. Why didn't she just say she had a plan?
- Finn/Rose: Didn't make sense to me why Rose tried to save Finn. They were all going to die anyway and is seemed needlessly dramatic

Ok that out of the way.. the fantastic bits:
- Humour: understand why this i not to everyone's taste but the tone felt similar to the original films and personally i loved it. Even the Poe/Hux exchange
- Lightsaber battles: enough said, amazing.
- Life on acht-to: The weird nuns, the Jedi tree, the gross milk scene. Amazing.
- Porgs: i dig them but again, like the Ewoks get why they are devisive
- Space battles: from the bomber sequence at the start to the Holdo hyperdriving through the Star Destroyer. Fantastic.
- Luke: this took me a while to mull over but on reflection i loved how they handled Luke. His self imposed exile made sense and by the end even came across as noble, but the sequence when he walks out by himself at the end in front of all those walkers had my inner child re-emerge. Loved the force projection twist and the more i dwell on it the more i like that he is now a force ghost on his terms and (hopefully) will still have a role to play. Thought the yoda scene worked too.

Most of all i loved that i couldn't predict the story and it felt fresh. The first 45 minutes of TFA in my eyes is as good as anything in the Star Wars saga but then it gets lazy and the old Death Star story line emerges. Rogue One was great as nostalgia piece, but we all knew what was going to happen. If Star Wars is to hold a place in current pop culture (rather than just historical greatness), it needs to take risks. At first i was sad to read how polarizing the reviews were on here, but i now actually think that is a good thing. It means people care and the movies are providing material worth talking about and debating (even if it means we don't always like it).

I might be wrong, and a lot will depend on the next installment, but i think this latest film will get better and better with age. It's completely hypothetical but i bet if ESB or ROTJ was released for the first time tomorrow we would find lots to find fault with. Lets face it, if you look objectively at the original trilogy there are plenty of ridiculous parts in there too.

More than anything, as a parent i am just over the moon to have regular new SW films to share with my kids, 5-10 years ago i think almost all of us would have bitten our right arm off for that to be the case.

Look forward to hearing others feedback on the film as they see it.

The more I think about it, the more I feel sorry for Mark Hammil. He's gone out of his way over the years to embrace the fandom and bring positivity and love to everything he does SW wise, long after most of the other stars have got sick of it. He said earlier in the year that he fundamentally disagreed with the direction Ryan Johnson was taking Luke, and after seeing the film it made me think just how heart-wrenching it must have been to act in those scenes, taking that character that was such a huge part of him, and being forced to do things that he knew Luke would never do.

Respect to you Mark, you're a true professional. And I hope you know that we don't blame you in anyway.

The first shot of the alien sitting on the rocks with its legs open, for one horrible moment I thought it had a big pair of gonads proudly on display.

Seeing Luke milk the mammaries was a blessing after that.

I thought the DJ bit was brilliant. At first I was the same as you - "so why couldn't he just brake out of jail himself?". After seeing how this planned out, it made perfect sense - he allowed himself to be locked up because that's where you will meet the types of people who are linked to possible big money making opportunities - in this case the rebellion, then saw the bigger opportunity, the first order. Verrrrry clever.

Regarding the cruiser light speed jump into the star destroyer, which was awesome, I am still trying to answer this one question - why didn't she do it as soon as soon as all the transports were off? Also, did she really have to stay behind to "pilot" it? Surely someone lower down the ranks, as she was way too valuable a leader to lose? But maybe someone has the reason for this I missed.

That's another reason why the Holdo character should have been Admiral Ackbar. That's the cruiser we see him commanding in Return Of The Jedi. Would have been an epic send off for old Ackbar to go out that way (disappointing that he got a derisory off screen death).

Saw it today, wish I hadn't but there ya go

I thought it was bloody awful and rather embarrassing to the Star Wars saga. I cannot believe what they did with Luke!!! Laura Dern was shite, Superleia was ****ing ridiculous and the storyline and execution was awful. Seems like they are trying to mould Dameron into the next Han Solo and that is blatantly obvious. Those penguin things are pathetic, and not needed. Luke milking the titty of an animal and drinking the milk ??? why?? he looked like a washed up old tramp downing a bottle of white lightning! There's too much to mention, and the list goes on forever, BUT...this is my view as someone who grew up with the OT. I can understand why the kids nowadays will like it, and im happy for those who do but I don't.

However, lets remember its a film and don't let anyone elses opinion sway yours. The only thing I would say is I wish they would have shoved that gold plated prick 3P0 up the large cannon at the end because im sick of his character. There is simply no reason for him to be there anymore and it only give Daniels more clout.

I also found it strange when Luke threw the saber over his shoulder. I thought this was a very weird move especially when the ending of TFA made it look as though Luke was very emotional on seeing it again.

I didn't like the guards from Smokes chamber either. It looks like Rian Johnson or whoever took Lucas's visions of legendary far east samurais a bit too literally as if he is trying to do what Lucas did. Snoke died like a bitch aswell, more so that Fett.

The more I think of what I watched, the harder it is to understand why?? These sequels are even more damaging than the PT in many ways. Driver and Ridley are Christensen and Postman all over again. Awful, wooden acting from actors who don't belong.

Wow, what a difference the second viewing has made! Absolutely loved it today. Picked up so much more and it made sense, whereas my head was spinning after the midnight viewing. I love the way RJ has been bold with this and taken it in different directions. Still not overly fussed with the Canto Bight section, but the rest is fab 8) There are so many memorable parts 8)

I liked a lot of the film, but why do they keep killing off the hero's of the original Trilogy? The narrative that they are old and should die anyway is bollocks. Life is rarely so based on age !

I hated that they killed Han in TFA. I hated seeing Luke go only slightly less due to his last stand moment - which was absolutely incredible. Mark Hamill was just so good, Oscar level ( not that Si Fi will get you awards )

I disliked the Rose character. A lot. All that release the slaves / animals bit was so out of place, it was jarring.

At the moment hard to see what's left for episode 9. Snokes gone ( he was cut down really easy for someone so powerful)
Luke's gone. Han was already down. Leia can't be in the next film ( unless they recast the part - which I think they will or it will be even more death on our plate )

Rey - I no longer give a **** about you / your parents or your place in all this. As the writing has backed you into a corner and there is nowhere left to go.

A lot to process after a first viewing today and left the cinema feeling numb. All I can say is It's certainly made me appreciate Rogue One even more, which is better than this in every respect - fact!
There are plenty of good moments, but far too many wtf moments, which have been picked up in this thread. Maybe I need to see it again, but won't be dragging myself to the cinema to see it. I'm genuinely concerned about the future of Star Wars films.

First viewing today and I'm more in the WTF camp of disappointment, a second viewing might help but can't see it happening.

Things I liked;

R2 projecting the original Leia hologram message to Luke, loved that!
Rebel control ship being flown in to Snokes Supremacy destroyer, absolutely loved that scene and the silence was pure theatre! Best moment for me.
Seeing Luke again.

Disliked:

The whole casino planet scene with the animals.
Snokes all too easy death
Rey's one minute turnaround from jedi numpty (reaching her hand out) to total understanding of the force.
All of Finn and Rose's scenes
Leia in space
Shitty attempts at comedy although I chuckled when Luke brushed his shoulder
Luke's island maids
Hux in general

I will go and see it again which may improve my opinion but not holding out much hope

1st time I saw it, I HATED IT. Way more than anyone else's post on here. Worse than Episode 2. Absolutely gutted.

2nd viewing- ****.......its still awful

3rd viewing- Holy ****, I'm really into this......its actually really good.

4th viewing- this is my fourth favourite of the lot, and the third best made.

I'm being honest. Strangest cinema experience ever.

Tried watching TFA a second time hated it even more, 3rd time never again. Considering how much I hated TLJ be my only viewing ever not even going to buy it on DVD or Blueray.
