No, no, no. Gender reversals my friend!

Lucas lead hero was a male. Disney lead hero is a female.

Lucas put Leia in a bikini.

Hence, Disney will have Finn in a thong.

Ian

Finn in a thong!  But very true Ian, I didn't think of it from that angle.

I did cringe, at lots of TFA. But apart from ESB, which one don't you cringe at, at some point. Their still all my favourate films ever. :)

Well i just snuck out today to watch it. Im a bit emotional at the minute  gonna go see it again tomm and take it in properly as it all seemed to go over my head...especially after Han died, hearing Chewie roar in upset/anger really got me. Will give a full review tommorow but im going to just sleep on it now...i will say that this felt way more OT than the PT, and certain parts took me back 30 years...

This is interesting. The Official timeline for TFA to Return of the Jedi.

Well worth a read

Am I the only one who cringed at Hux's grand speech to the order?

I thought he did the horrible sneering weasel type role quite well. I think he is just younger than we are used to for that type of role

I thought he played the part quite well, that speech was well acted, he looks like he's going to start foaming at the mouth by the end of it. He was abit underused for me overall, we need to see more of his crazy fascism coming through next time.

There were a couple of times in the film when my mind went awol and the next scene or so went over my head. Once or twice where I was just shocked something had happened (like Hans death which I'd managed to avoid any spoilers for beforehand), or when I felt something was missed (like Chewie not going to Leia when they land after his death, or the "why didn't Luke say something prophetic" moment).

I'm pretty sure this's is why people are saying you need to watch it more than once. it's quite a lot to absorb for us old timers :D

I agree 100% that it feels OT. Its hard to relate TFA to the PT in any way for me, other than the fact it happens in the Lucas universe.

Aww **** it, i cant sleep anyway. Ill keep this short and sweet. The film is not as bad as i thought it would be, but it is another ANH. The plot etc felt similar, Hans death was an obvious i suppose, but it still hurt. Some bits did scream OT but others screamed PT.

I wasnt keen on Hux at all, and i seriously think this movie has Influence from Hitler / Third Reich. That Dominic geezer is a bit shite really. His speech sounded so false, and even worse that Palpatines senate speech after he got Anakin on his side in ROTS.

I think there were some really corny/cringeworthy moments and some genuinely funny and sentimental moments. Phasma was a complete Fraud and definately brought in to sell merch. Not very keen on BB8 at all, im afraid that he just looks off. Driver was good as Kylo, and Boyega ok as Finn. Ridley shone in this movie, and IF they get the right storyline next time then maybe they are onto something.

Overall, ill be seeing it again tommorow but im afraid that although it is slightly better than most of the PT, (although i too put ROTS above it) it doesnt touch the OT. I know it wasnt meant too, but as before i think the wrong guy was asked to direct this. And Kasdan didnt have Leigh Brackett (RIP) writing with him as per ESB, which showed.

So here we go with a pre-second viewing opinion:

The movie wasnt as bad as i thought it would be, but it didnt 'Bring back Star Wars' so to say. Out of 10 id give it maybe a 5/6 and im being generous in that. They seriously have to go into hyperdrive with number 8 to turn this around otherwise they will go down as the same as the PT over time. Im pretty confident the stand alone films will do very well.

I know I've been very vocal in my criticisms, to the point some guys here just don't like me because of it, but Lee, we got almost the exact same out of this. You've described my feelings in a much nicer, less "bitter" way.

How did Sonny like it? My 7 year old is still raving about it. Just got a copy of it today, and he sat enthralled again this afternoon watching it here at home. If I am going to give the movie any legitimate credit, it's that it has taken my younger son, at a comparable age to what I was when I saw ANH, and turned him from liking SW to a near obsession with it. And for that, I will concede and offer gratitude to Abrams.

Ian

Glad that you've seen it and given your spin on it.

Very important point raised here, in respect of the reactions of your kids, as it is they that are getting the SW experience and the chance to see something that will carry on the mantle ( and let's face will make the big money for Disney, as that is the driving force when reality bites).

For me they will never match the OT for the simple reason that those films have been watched, time and again, and are the building blocks of my own passion for SW. BUT I enjoyed the new film, the chance to have more SW cinema experience and fuel the fire. It's left me wanting more, it's left hundreds of thousands of people discussing it, chewing over it, and coming up with " what's next" ...so it's started a passion, reignited a passion, and brought SW into the mainstream again for a whole new generation.
As pointed out in a previous post, with all of the awful things going on around the world, it's given a little escapism and enjoyment to a hell of a lot of people, brought smiles, tears, and enjoyment...can't be a bad thing in my book. That's entertainment, and that is what it is... A story and a film...can't wait for the next instalment.
No one is right or wrong, we are all human...may your force be with you

Perhaps these films will be the new OT for the younger generation.

No film will ever come close to the original 3 for us because we aren't kids anymore. I'm not surprised that for kids today these films are awesome! And good for them...a moral film covering good and evil seems to fit well into the world today, just as ANH did in 77. :D

I'm still to have to my second showing. Maybe that will improve my feelings about this film

Just got back from my second viewing, and Sonnys first. Sonny loved it and said that it was excellent. He even had the nerve to say the new troopers look better than the old ones :D little git. He loved Kylo but his only reaction to Phasma was "dad, its a woman!" LOL. He said that Hux was rubbish though, and loved Finn and Rey. Also got upset when R2 was is shutdown mode  So from his end, this is is first ever new Star Wars movie. Yes, he saw TPM 3D at the flicks, but he liked this better.

My opinion after a 2nd viewing? I think JJ done quite a good job after seeing it again. I was too harsh first time round. I actually think that as a movie in itself, it surpasses ROTS now in my eyes. The acting was very good for the most part, and everyone done well, except for Hux. He is the one big let down from this movie, as was Phasma. Hans death really hit hard, but its fantasy and i think it adds to the possibilities in further sequels. The plot wasnt excellent, and obviously an OT cross over, but all in all JJ has made a good film that the younger generation can take to heart.

Am i happy i ate humble pie and went to watch it? Yes, it was worth it.

Will i have more of an open mind for future Disney SW? Yes, but too many directors will spoil the broth and i think we need more consistency.

Well done JJ, well done Disney and Lucasfilm and im so happy that although im not the biggest fan, it made me appreciative of what they have done. Hopefully they can surpass themselves next time round, and the new generation of Star Wars fans can look after the hobby when us old bastards are gone :)
