Talk about new Star Wars movie, do not read if you have NOT seen it

Imagine last week I posted a competition saying guess what film I watched this afternoon, 1st prize a lovely MOC.
Here are some clues to help you guess.

Film starts off with a battle, hero has been tasked with retrieving some vital info that the good guys want.
Bad guys quickly over run the good guys so the hero places the info in a droid and tells it to bugger off
Droid wanders about a desert until pick up by scavengers - luckily an unassuming character takes it in and once they discover it holds vital info they vow to help return it to their owner.

Along the way they bump into new characters including a smuggler and his wookie co pilot, they also go to a space bar full of weird looking creatures. While they are there some of the locals tip off the bad guys so they have to fight their way out.

The bad guys have this really big weapon floating around in space and to prove how powerful it is they use it to blow up an innocent planet killing millions of people.

The droid gets reunited with his owner but unfortunately the bad guys have tracked the ship to the good guys hidden base and now the big floating weapon is heading their way - tension builds as we hear the countdown to it being in firing range.

There is hope though as the droid and the hero take off in their spaceship to make a attack on the weapon, they have to contend with enemy fighters and turbo lasers but at the last second (the base was actually clear to fire on the good guys) he blows it up saving everyone.

It's not all good though as one of the older characters (that some of the younger ones have almost grown to see as a father figure) was killed by someone that was once very close to them, it was a brutal killing that they witnessed but they were too far away to help and could only watch on in horror.

Guessing most people would have considered that a very easy comp!

What a load of ****in ****!!!!! Add in the replay of the bunker scene from ROTJ with Han and Chewie and TFA is just a complete rehash of the original films.

Remember at the end of Star Trek reboot it was left that the timeline had been changed so the next film could go in any direction but what did JJ do a complete retelling of wrath of Khan - something that he later publically apologised for and most recently the makers of the 3rd film have said thanks JJ but we are not considering it cannon and the next film will pretend edge of darkness didn't happen.

Great characters and physical props/sets are wonderful but we deserved an original script to go with it

Couldn't have put it better myself. Absolutely spot on. This is a reboot for kids and not for us old-timers.

OK, just finished my 2nd screening of the day and I've upped my rating to 8.5/10!

Ren seemed more troubled than the spoilt brat on the 1st view.....still had a tear in my eye when the OT mob showed up though :( w

My local Odeon had a few TFA promotion bits:

Anyone else found any other promo leaflet designs? I have a few spares I'd be happy to swap.

I have just got back home from my second viewing of the day, went at 12:01am showing this morning got home at 4am went to bed and got up at 7am for work, left work at 4pm and went to the 7pm showing tonight and I have to say I loved pretty much all of it. It was everything I wanted and more.

Stand out parts for me...

Rey eating and putting the old rebellion pilot helmet on (weird for a bit that stands out I know but just liked it).

The resistance showing up on Takodana and Poe wiping out a load of TFs and Stormtroopers to Fins excitement.

Stormtroopers deciding they don't fancy going anywhere near Kylo when he's throwing a saber tantrum.

Obviously the death of Han was just an insane scene, more the growl Chewie lets out than anything else.

The bit that really really got me though was when the lightsaber flew out of the snow past Kylo and into Reys hands.

The only real negative thoughts I have on the film are that Captain Phasma didn't seem to do much at all and seemed easily beaten, would have liked to know more about the knights of Ren but I guess that will be in the next film maybe??

I enjoyed Rey a lot more than I thought I would, she didn't go wrong in any way for me in the whole film.

I think thats about all I can think of at the moment but I know more things will spring to mind after a few more viewings and days to think about it.

Right now I would give it a solid 9.5/10

I enjoyed it. Yeah, there are A LOT of similarities to the OT, but better that than being like the prequels, or like a typical Disney film.

I think we need to realise that no matter what they did the odds are we wouldn't rate the films as highly as the OT. We all love those films, FFS we like them so much we spend our spare time collecting the toys and talking to other blokes we'll never meet about them.
Saying that, the new film is still leagues above the Prequels. Ok, getting Ebola is better than the prequels, but the new film is closer to the OT than it is to the Prequels. That alone gets a thumbs up in my book.

Few things i didn't like, Kylo without the mask, in fact him in general. Very needy insecure teenager. As for his lightsaber duel, either he's a **** sith or Finn and Rey are bloody good with lightsabers. The plot does borrow a lot the OT, BUT it's the first of three films (plus whatever extra ones they spin off) it has a lot of scene setting and loose ends to connect. It's gonna be easier to judge this film after seeing the others.

Ohh and most importantly, WHAT WOULDN'T YOU DO TO Daisy Ridley?

Also the doll that looked like an orange jump suited rebel pilot in the panning shot of her digs. Daddy flew an X-Wing maybe?

Yeah I noticed that!!

Anybody else notice Fin pulled the training ball from ANH out of that bag when he first was looking through when searching for something when him and Rey first got on the on the MF?

I didn't catch it first viewing but realised second, sorry if somebody else mentioned earlier in the thread.

He picked it up and glanced at it and just threw it aside obviously not knowing what it was.

han delivered some good one liners which made me giggle

so this snoke fella? whats his story ?my mate reckons hes palpatine

Alrighty, I was all geared up to get on a have a rant but I've decided I'm not going to add to the negativity already in abundance so instead I'll talk about the film.

I came away not knowing what to feel, being that it was 3am in the morning certainly didn't help.

I was really enjoying the film right up until Han died, you could see it coming from a mile away but a little bit of me was hoping it wouldn't. All I could think of once he fell was, you bastards! It really took away my ability to soak up the rest of the film. I guess what I really wanted to see was a reunion of sorts. One last chance to see the three main characters of the original trilogy back together on screen and now that will not happen.

Must say they certainly made sure there would be no mistake that Han is Dead, impaled by a lightsaber, falls into the depths of a planet which ends up exploding. Yup I thinks he's dead.

Another thought I had when pondering what was missing is although there where a plethora of new creatures to be seen there was no actual new race of creatures. In previous films there has been at least one race of creatures introduced, meaning more than one. Star Wars gave us Jawas and Sandpeople, ESB gave us Ugnaughts, ( and if you go off cut footage there should have been more than one Wampa ) and of course Jedi gave us everyone's favourite the Ewoks plus Calamarians and Gamorrean Guards.

I really need to see it again, I enjoyed it and it's helped redeemed the prequels for me. I'll be taking my 8yr son to see it as he's really keen but away at the moment with his Mum. That there is what it will be really about for me, whether I enjoyed it or not experiencing a New Star Wars movie with my kids is what dreams are made of. He won't over analyse it, he won't pick apart holes in plots he'll see a magical universe where people fly around in space ships, funny looking creatures and an endless adventure sure to light a fire in his imagination for years to come. That's what it's all about!

My money is on him turning out to be darth plagueis.

Could be, it would follow, as Plageius supposedly has the secret of bringing the dead back, as per the storyline of palpatines offer to Anakin.

Where do we stand on Rey? Lukes Daughter? That would fit, reference to the rebellion helmet, her ability to fix things and scavenge parts, and of course the calling of Lukes saber to her, (plus the"awakening" in her of the force)

I soooo need to watch it again :D

Watched it back to back first one to get the emotional bit out the way second to make a less biased judgement.

Both times excellent, JJ has taken a almost impossible job of relaunching starwars franchise and he nailed it as far as I'm concerned.

Character casting spot on, pacing and musical score excellent.

That's how you make a starwars movie!

Thank goodness for that - finally managed to watch it over here - amazed that it came out later in the US than pretty much the rest of the world -so much for the US being the centre of the universe !

Knew this thread existed and have just read through it - disappointed to see some of the bickering/name calling - I do believe that opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one - but lets just respect each persons - opinion that is - not arsehole

For me it was a true Star Wars film - it really had the feel of a Star Wars film and I could happily sit and watch that on Christmas afternoon with a belly full of turkey and christmas pud. OK, there was a rehash of the original plot and some of the action was a bit of a stretch (lightsabre battle) - but come on we're talking about Star Wars here - everything has always been a bit far fetched and anyone believing otherwise is not remembering correctly

I thought the acting on the whole was a million times better than the prequals - not seeing the 'flatness' at all - both Finn and Rey and Finn and Poe have some great chemistry - and loads to explore. I did think Ren could have been better but I think the spoiled, sulky teenager theme has always run through SW so no major surprise. One funny thing that the wife of a friend mentioned was that Adam Driver looks nothing like like the offspring of Han and Leia - far too ugly apparently !

I expected it to be good based on the trailers and wasn't disappointed - there were plenty of nods to original fans without them being shoe-horned in (love the MF chess board) but I also think it works as a standalone film for new fans. I am going to take little one to see it as it will be a great first ever film for her to watch and I am sure that a new generation of fans has just been born

Blue dog that was spot on dude...exactly on the new races! I was talking to someone at work about it and said I don't feel I've really got to know a new race. I was watching and with my class yesterday to do a Star Wars day for them and as I was watching I thought there were no jawas, knowing a little of the,, their language....

And agree on Han, that's what's taken away from me more than anything. I wanted to see Han saving him again at some point, at the smile of reunion between the two friends...

Couple of things I have been thinking about over the past couple of days.

I did get hairs standing up on the back of my neck when Luke reappeared at the end. Especially when the music played. Was that just me.

I have felt quite sad about Star Wars for the past couple of days. I think the reason why is captain solo is dead! A fictional character that I have grown up with my entire life and he is now no more. I know we all thought it would probably be coming but now he's actually gone it leaves a bit of a hole.

Can't wait to see it again Saturday, now I have had a few days to digest and take it all in.

I'm think all this as Luke being Reys Dad and DP. Also need to watch it again.

Am really enjoying this thread now, it's great to hear the wildly differing views. Got no time for the argueing. I think some people picking it apart are overthinking it a little. Plot rehashing aside (and I agree it is very similar to Ep4) in terms of the this couldn't happen, that couldn't happen - it's a ****ing action space fantasy! There are tons of things in the OT that don't add up but we accept it and enjoy it because it serves the story. E.g how the **** does a 60kg girl get a massive steel chain around the 2 meter diameter neck of a 3 ton Hutt and strangle him!? Even aged 7 I thought that was hilarious, but it doesn 't matter. I love the Sailbarge scene regardless. I watched it again last night (TFA) and although I have a few issues and there's things I think they could have done better there are many positives. Overall a very enjoyable watch, a beautiful looking and well constructed movie. But then I don't really slag the prequels and many can't stand them. I enjoy watching them.
