Somebody stop me!! Or at least slow me down...

I dread to tell my wife the "truth" about what I've spent on POTF/Droids figs since January but then she'll think nothing of spending £££'s on a handbag that's still not big enough to carry everything she thinks she needs for a night out. I can justify my spending - I don't drink (much), don't smoke at £8 a packet & like gambling I'll only spend what I can afford to lose. I tend to go on buying runs & then leave it a while. Trying to complete my POTF run is gonna be tricky, apart from the easier ones to get I'm now left with the high end ones - Yak, Nikto, Anakin etc etc.

Oh dear, I shall be taking Todds advice for a bit.

You mean ****ing lots of cows ? Ed might be able to help you with that as I think he knows how to milk them

Show me the beast and I will do my best :?

If you are seriously out of control you need to assess the situation and prioritise.
1) Rent
2) other Bills
3) Food
4) Toys!

I spend most of my D.I. on toys... Always make sure I can afford the important stuff though. What's the point having a (insert grail here) if you end up homeless, hungry and cold?!

If a once in a lifetime item comes up then I can bend the rule.... For production stuff chances are another will come up for sale in a week or a month, so unless your talking preproduction there is huge quantity of most items out there.

It's not a sprint dude

Thanks guys, all taken on board.

Believe me, i'm not getting myself in trouble... Just spent the most amount of money yet on 2 different figures in a single month!!

I just hope nothing comes up in the next month as I don't know what i'll do!!

Cheers guys!!

Hey Bram, on a serious note I would say that this can happen to everyone. Its difficult to curb spending especially when pieces you really want come up. Murphy's law says they will come up when you cant afford them.

One thing I have found useful to get through times when I cant spend much money is to focus time and efforts into displaying. It costs very little to alter displays sometimes and it can have a real impact. Its rewarding and fun to see things change. Move the collection round and think of alternative display methods to keep it fresh.

If that doesnt work, I dunno....... maybe get a paper round mate!

That's really good advice. I am currently moving stuff around and being clever with space and it's a great distraction. You have to realise that great items will always be online If you have the cash.

Another thing I do is give yourself a limit on prices. For example, say that you will never pay over £10 for a Klattu on a ROTJ mint card. Stick to it. It's easy to blow £25 on a MOC ROTJ Klattu. Try hunting a good one for a £10 and saving £15.

Another thing I do because I collect all vintage collectables is buy cheap things for a focus. For example, if I buy a ROTJ erasers display box, when I'm not flush, I might buy 1 or 2 erasers for a few quid and try and complete the display.

Hope this helps.

Mind you, I'm skint and still have $200 making its way to the US. Your defiantly not the only one :)

Wow, a sensible post from grant!

Sound advice from Chris and Grant, I tend to go through phases, usually
4 - 5 MOC at a time, that suppresses my urge to buy for a couple of months.! Inbetween I tend to bid on stuff on eBay but not enough to win items, kinda keeps my mind in check that I'm having ago just not winning.

I definitely have got carried away in the past so I know how hard it is to resist spending but I very rarely go over my budget unless its something I just can't let go, budgeting sure is limited but if spent wisely it goes a long way.

I don't mind saying that £100-150 A month is usually my limit, that's 2-3 MOC if you play your cards right and after all this is not a race!

When I encounter something that I want that is more than my budget I ask the seller if I can do a payment plan, $600 purchases are much easier when you space them out 3X$200 or 6X$100 for example.

Last thing I do if time is not on my side and the seller won't do a payment plan is get selling! We all acquire crap when we are just buying for the sake of buying so put it on the chopping block to raise funds for something you really want.

Don't forget to cash in on Birthdays and Christmas as well ;) If you play your cards right you might end up with Vintage instead of socks and pants!

That last statement was brought to you by the man who spent way over his budget last month

I've had to cut down my spending considerably in the last few years.

Things you can do to cut down on expenditure:-

Get yourself some specific focus to your collecting which limits the amount of stuff you'd be interested in buying.

Collect something cheaper. (I focus on cardbacks rather than MOC these days).

Sell stuff you're no longer interested in or flip to generate cash to spend.

Stop looking at ebay/sale sections of forums.

:)

Jason

I have virtually stopped looking on ebay at all now!
I used to scan the listings many times a day.... Now I check once a day and only for Jawa stuff. My wallet is much happier

I was in a similar position when I first started collecting on a regular basis and also need to stop/slow down.

I think having a clear focus can help.

For me now I hardly have anything to spend my money on. The pieces I want hardly ever come up for sale

Brilliant!

Know what you mean about birthdays and Christmas Joe! Even the in-laws have started buying me approved vintage items  :D

Thanks guys for all the info... I've taken it all on board.

Only problem I have is that I have about 60 of the 79 ROTJ MOC Figures that I need so unless I sell the lot and start another focus I am not sure changing is a good idea.

I think I will be taking Chris' advice as I am half way through a nice display cabinet, but even that might be adjusted now.

The other problem I have is that I have becomeobsessed with DT Figures which is probably not a good focus idea as each item costs quite a bit.

I think I will take some time out and re-evaluate which way I want to go.

I have sold off most of my needless stuff, still have a couple of MOCs for sale, so if you wanna help out you guys could buy them off me?!

I do have some AFA graded POTF figures which I am considering selling, but I really like them and am not sure I could part with them yet.

I also considered selling my whole ROTJ MOC Figure Collection but am very unsure I would be able to find a buyer?!

Thanks again, its good to know the different ideas and situations that arise in this game.

Bram
