I see a few of us on here are into running when not collecting Star Wars toys and memorabilia so thought maybe a thread could take off to talk about events/races we've done and would recommend as well as those maybe to avoid of course if the feeling is strong enough!

I wasn't looking to start off anything competitive to discuss times etc. but equally if its a time you're proud of, why not share it.

That's the intro done I'll get the ball rolling with the next post, hope a few more join in :D

The Great North Run is fantastic. I live on the route. :D I'm not a runner prefer cycling but got a time of 2:05 I was proud of.
Did the Edinburgh marathon which is a quick marathon but is a poor course design as the finish line is at the 11 mile mark which is pretty disheartening to se guys finishing when you're halfway.
Signed up for the Bamburgh triathlon in april but currently I'm 2 months into a year's worth of ops for ankle reconstruction and I don't think I can manage it on crutches. :D

Started running late in 2010 after a mate had persuaded me to do a half marathon to raise some money for Macmillan after my father passed away from Cancer. Never been into fitness at all before, so it was a steep learning curve!

I've now, just over 4 and a half years later racked up quite a haul of events and medals

Ultra Marathons: 1
Marathons: 21 (10 in 2014)
Half Marathons: 26
5 & 10k's: lost count!

My plans for the year ahead (I've run 3 half's and a full already) are to run a few more marathons as well as tackling a 2 day ultra marathon event running 60 miles of the Ridgeway finishing at Avebury

Marathon PB: 3:39:45
Half Marathon PB: 1:37:50
10k PB: 44:31
5k PB: 21:36

Favourite races:
Great North Run
Berlin Marathon
Marathon Des Alpes Maratime (Nice - Cannes)
Bath Half Marathon

I've been trying to run more recently mainly due to being in the worse shape of my life and not wanting to die yet. Used to run a lot at school and played a lot of football before having to "retire" at the ripe young age of 24, due to the savage amount of abuse i'd put my body through in my early 20s, sad times. Since then i've been mainly sitting around doing **** all and, frankly, it's really starting to show. :?
Don't do anything competitive just running down the canal where i live tho i do tend to get competitive with my last run which has only led to me getting hurt.
I use the MapMyRun app and try to do a faster 5k each time. Tho that's starting to get dangerous. Especially in my shape.

I've now run the GNR 4 times and am doing it again in September.. top of my list! Love that race and the atmosphere, its a tough course, for a non-runner 2:05 is a very impressive time! :D

Crap, that's quick. I have only been running again about a year and still very intermittently but i have managed to get my 5k down to 23:32, which i thought was pretty good.
At the moment i'm far to unfit for that not to hurt like hell but i'm getting there. Kind of. :?

Pete, 23:32 is awesome and you'll get much quicker in time if you really want to, no question of that, it is only a case of keeping at it with determination and drive really!

I actually don't enjoy running quickly (for me) anymore (thank you for thinking it is quick though 8) ), it was something I'd got caught up in until 12-18 months ago and then decided that running and enjoying the scenery and company was what I wanted more of rather than looking at my watch, burning my lungs and not even noticing what was going on around me as I chased the time.
Oddly I'm actually prouder of the HM and Mara times

My wee cousin is about to do this,

http://iancorless.org/2015/03/10/marathon-des-sables-2015-30th-edition-race-preview/

****ing glorified suicide if you ask me!

I wouldn't mind getting in to running, but sadly after 20 years of playing on astro turf I don't think my body, and hamstrings in particular, would take the pounding you get from running on roads. Road running is brutal. I can run for 2 hours on Astro and not feel too bad, but 30 mins on the roads and my knees/hips are ripped out of me.

My big problem is being a competitive little ****er. If I was gonna do a marthon I'd wanna do it in under 3 hours and would probably kill myself training to beat it. That and the sheer amount of time you need to commit to run a time like that, are what put me off. Ohh and I'm a lazy ****!

I do the odd bit of running now and then but I am predominantly a Triathlete/Cyclist.

Currently training for IRONMAN Stafford 70.3 in June, followed by the European Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships in Geneva (I managed to qualify for Team GB! 8) ) in July, This is my "A" race of the year.

I don't have particularly quick PB's as I don't run many stand alone Running Races, when I do run it is generally off the back of a Swim & Bike in a Triathlon.

Marathon: Never run a standalone but did a 3:54 off the back of an IRONMAN!
Half Mara: 1:31 (defo got a 1:27ish in me with some proper training)
10km: 39.30 (think should be capable of a 38:xx on a less hilly course)
5km: 18:51 (Sub 18:30 should be doable this year with some good training)

WOW!!! that is one impressive tally for such a short period of time!!! Chapeau my firend. 8)

Which Ultra was it? do you have anymore in the pipeline?

Great to see some of us smashing the bullshit stereotypical image of a "Star Wars Nerd".
Not done much myself in the past;
30 mile cross country
26 mile cross country
Bristol Half
London 10 km

My training for the forthcoming London marathon is going ok, generally anything between 7-14 miles depending on time available.
I'm hoping for a 4 hr or less time, but in honesty I'm there for the fun and experience.

What's happened to Pete, his signature says former forum member and i have not seen him around for a while :(

oh and staying on topic , I can't run save my life

Have hated running all my life and joining the army for a short while didn't help :? I remember running around the training school for miles and miles thinking 'boring ...boring ..boring ...pain ...pain ...boring ...' :|

Cross country at school was another hellish nightmare. Obviously you chaps get a lot from running but to me it's just misery

So Rome marathon went well back in March, Paris yesterday.. not the best, but at the end with that big bit of bling.. still smiling!

Like you Barry I have always hated running with a passion. Cross country sheer hell (would make any excuse to get out of it) I can't run now as I broke my hip in 2003 and although it is now fixed it's a weak part of my body. Luckily I'm still quite slim and can keep weight off some how despite eating all the wrong foods - people at work hate me
