a customer contacted me saying that the post office witheld an elvelope i sent because they wanted another £2.70 on top of the 90p i already paid (AN ENVELOPE WITHIN THE UK!!). In case you're wondering how big the envelope was, it fit in the ****ing post box with no folding or bending. Cunts. Absolute ****ing cunts.
OK, here's the thing. You have to now beat the royal mail at their own game to avoid things like this happening. If you play the game, then you'll actually come out on top.
I used to box all my items in flat boxes that fit through a letter box before the postage charges increased as I knew my items would be well packaged that way, and buyers don't mind paying the £2,20 it cost to send well packaged boxes 2nd class. I basically never bothered to measure my packets. Now its imperative to do so.
Here's your new friend.......
You need to make yourself one of these, and the aim of the game is to package your items well enough that they are protected whilst staying inside the rules.
I now mainly use jiffy bags for sending single or even double figures. You can get away with lightly bubble wrapping most figures before sliding them into a bubble protected jiffy bag.
The new guidelines state that 'large letters' must be no thicker than
up to & including 2.5cm! (Ignore the fact your parcel fits through a letter box, thats totally irrelevant in terms of the charges). This means even if your package scrapes the sides of the measurer but still goes through, then its ok. DO NOT let a post office clerk tell you is a packet because it scrapes the sides of the large letter slot. This is BS, and its just the PO trying to run up the bill.
So with a bit of shrewdness @ the packing stage, you can actually still protect your items securely and get away with paying either 69p 2nd class or 90p first class, Thus putting less money than before in RM's pocket where you may have blindly been happy sending items out in boxes @ 2,20 or 2,60 respectively before the price hike.
Any items larger than this, you can weigh up the pro's and cons of using collect+ or similar versus royal mail.
Think smart, and the new charges can actually work in your favour!!
