Prequals are better!

I dont mind ROTS AND AOTC but The Phantom Menace, know wonder hes divorced. I read the ROTS book before seeing the film and though **** this is going to be epic..... It wasnt

Got to chip in on this one,

I watched the prequels once on first release, I thought never again. Then my son grew up and after playing Lego Star Wars he wanted to watch the films, ESB is his fav' (great taste) but he enjoys the prequels, and watching them with him I have enjoyed them (strange but they have grown on me) and really enjoyed TPM 3D in the cinema (not as much as my son who leaped out of his seat and whooped when Anakin won the pod race).

The problem is we are now adults, don't get me wrong the originals 'kick ass' but we do not experience the magic that kids do when they watch a film and we will not get satisfaction from a film aimed at kids. Cinema was different in the 70's, the world was different, the original trilogy effect could never be repeated.

I look at the Prequels like a documentary done by an outsider and the Originals as the dirty grimy fly on the wall truth...

(edited because I cannot spell the word 'got')

There are films i enjoyed as a kid too that are ****. Of course kids like the prequels. They're kids. Kids like any old **** with spaceships in. I know i did.
I think George Lucas would argue very strongly against these films being aimed at kids. They're not at all they're just so ****ing dumb it seems that way. The originals were never aimed at kids either and they were enjoyed by people our age in their millions back in 1977-83.

Sorry if I didn't put my point across well enough, my point was how things are seen by kids...

Hang on I was going to go on about how kids find things more believable, and how films imprint on their memories and effect their thinking etc.
Then I remembered all those nutters that learnt to speak speak Navi or whatever it was in Avatar and then ran around covered in blue paint! :?

One of the problems with the prequels is being seen as kids films after failing to be the 'movies for everyone' Lucas tried to force them into being. I agree with your points, like you said 'the originals were never aimed at kids' but like I said 'Cinema was different in the 70's, the world was different'. Sci-Fi is not looked at today as it was then, groundbreaking, exciting, revolutionary...

It would be interesting for us to watch the original trilogy now after a MIB ('Men in black' not 'mint in box') style memory loss and to see our reactions and opinions. I think it would stand head and shoulders above a lot of modern Sci-Fi but I still feel you need to see it as a kid to get as sucked in as we are (then again you do look a little young to be a vintage collector on your cardback  :D ).

100% agreed, films make more of a lasting impression on you when you see them first as a child. Not really sure what that says in terms of the prequels v the originals. I think that's just a general truth aside of the argument. There was very little i didn't absolutely love as a kid but as an adult watching the same films i loved as a kid the good ones still look good and the **** ones don't anymore. But i agree without being able to watch them for the first time you can't really judge exactly how you might feel now seeing them for the first time.

Prequals lack any spiritual/emotional depth. Its forced. Thats why kids like it and adults dont. Forced dialogue, forced acting, vaccum filmmaking.

I find the originals are like The Simpsons. There something in it for everyone and you appreciate diffrent things as you go.

Originals:
Aged 4- Ewoks and Lightsabers and spacefights
Aged 11- Film production and space fights
Aged 16- Art design, script writing and space fights
Adult- The psycho-social impact of the modern mythology in Star Wars and its relevence to morality and mythological histrocial comparrison to a contemporary globalised world.

Prequals:

Aged 4- Jar Jar is Funny and Darth Maul is AWESOME!
Aged 11- I like the action bits and Darth Maul is AWESOME!
Aged 16- God this dialogue is so ****ing cheesy- '"your softer than sand!" WTF? Who are the missing Jedi? Why are they Missing? etc, etc.....
Adult- FACKING BULLSHIT! (Unless i can watch them with kids)

Rant off.

I have no idea what i have just written............. :?

All i know when i was a kid- i thought The Last Starfighter was awesome as well as Star Wars. I dont really think of The Last Starfighter anymore.

Also I paid for the prequals. All the toys i bought in the 90's- i should have had an exective producer credit for EP1.

"Your softer than sand"!!!!

You got to be ****ing kidding me George- I ****ing paid you £££££ for "Your ****ing softer than ****ing sand"!!!!!!

I love the orginals

Also, the original Star Wars received 10 Oscar nominations. Not voted for by children as far as i know.

Basically its difficult to compare the two sets of films. If you watched the original trilogy as a kid you won't be able to capture that magic with the prequel films as an adult, you will be disappointed. This has lead to these average films (prequels) being labelled as piles of shite.

If you watch the prequels before the originals the originals can look outdated. I have read some interesting threads about the best order to watch all six films in for newbs, this is how I would recommend it...

A New Hope (start at the beginning)
Empire Strikes Back (keeps the 'I am your father' reveal in place)
Then watch The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith as 'flashbacks' after learning of Luke's parentage
Finish with Return of the Jedi (end at the end)

This way the films effects improve with each movie (ROTJ holds up quite well), the suprises are intact and the end is glorious (but Ewok ridden).

Sorry to ramble, for some reason I can get a bit carried away with Star Wars :D

The Last star fighter...

Did that have George Peppard as the Space Cowboy?

The Star Wars Oscar wins are all for Set/Props/Music/Costumes if I remember right, there were nominations for best film/screenplay etc but no wins.

I don't think the prequels where even nominated for anything.

I dont think the prequals have any depth. Its never discussed. It would be alot more interesting to show how people can give up democracy for authotarianism and turn against the rightous. This is crucial to feeling the plight of the galaxy and how it refers to us. How it impacts on the development of the characters.

The orginals were such beautifuly constructed morality tales- im still findaing stuff about that blows my mind.

Lucas went for the lowest common denominator when making the prequals as in audience. I think Hollywood and Lucas are out of touch with how clever people are these days and make crap sensless action because they think we have no attention span and thats what we want.

There are moments in the prequals that touch on brilliance and then in the next scene it will be lazy static filmaking with a huge influnce on CGI bouncing around the scene. I think if Lucas (happy birthday) had surrounded himself with artists like he did in the orginals rather than artists that are talented but 'yes men', we could have had a great trilogy.

EP1 was nominated for SFX
EP3 was nominated for costumes.

**** the oscars though- its just a sycophantic clicky club full of lizards. :p

The prequels received 4 nominations between them. The first one 2, the 2nd and 3rd one each. I think.

ps. The last Star Fighter is awesome. Saw it about 2 years ago for the first time. I think i saw bits of it when i was a kid but really didn't remember it. I expected to hate it but i thought it was great. But i get your point, i made the same one. There are lots of films i loved when i was a kid and don't think are very good now.

Really- its still good? Need to go back an edit the post to thundercats or something :?

Mind you- I acually like EP1 and EP3 more than most fans who are indiffrent to the prequals.

BUT EP2!!!! F****** ****** ***** ****** ** ****!!!!!!!!

It's kind of simplistic and not an incredible film but a very cool idea well executed. It kind of works in a short story kind of way. Not to be taken too seriously tho.
Also, watch Flight of the Navigator. Still quality. It has that pacing that films used to have where they actually give you time to breathe and get to know the characters and really feel their situation other than just quickly hurling action straight into your eyes like they do now-a-days.

Your both right about childhood films not standing the test of time, and the 'emptiness' of the prequels compared to the originals. I just feel they are average as opposed to appalling.

Thanks for the Oscar corrections :)

Don't even think about putting Thundercats in the **** list  'Ancient Spirits of evil, transform this decayed being...'
BTW have you watched the new Thundercats (maybe thats best saved for another thread?) :D

Besides the computer generated graphics...which were the top of the line at the time...The Last Star Fighter is sill a bloody good movie. Just love it. 8)

He are some action figures that never ended up making it to the shelves.

This one fits the bill well. 'The Explorers', I put this on for my kid with my memories of how funny and cool it was. What a pile of crap, only one funny moment and really dated. But my kid loved it, watched it every day after school for a week.

Is the last Starfighter the one with George Peppard and the kid with the mole?

Oh wow. Never seen those before. Awesome. So there are no packaged versions of these at all. Just like this?
