Premier League 2019/2020 Thread

I had the misfortune of going to the Brighton game on Thursday night so I thought I'd seen the absolute rock bottom in terms of performance, roll on tonight and I was wrong. The first 50 minutes or so were utter shite. After that we've had a great 10 minute spell and seen the game out. Have we turned a corner? Not sure. Have we finally shown a glimpse at the talent he is in the squad? Hell yes. We need a lot of work but hopefully we can push on for a European place and have a bit of a cup run. Who would've thought playing wingers on the wing and a centre forward front and centre might actually work

Yeah, Arsenal were completely outplayed for the first hour, by a poor WHU. They barely had a shot and hardly went in our penalty area. Thankfully for Arsenal, WHU have Arthur Masuaku...

I watched chunks of the Arsenal game last night. They were utter shite until they scored, and the goal came from nothing. Then WH imploded for 10 mins and that was the game over. Hard to know what to make of that game as it is two sides utterly devoid of any confidence. I wouldn't be in a rush to appoint Freddie though.

As for that Son goal, it was a good goal. BUT........all he does is run straight from his box to Burnley's box. He literally runs in a straight line. He runs faster than a few Burnley players but he doesn't have to take any detours to get round them. They just jog along and watch him assuming someone else will tackle him and then, hey presto, he is on the edge of the box and finishes it well. Good goal, no doubt, but **** me, what the hell where Burnley doing. At least put a bit of pressure on him. Assuming I could run 80 yards at top speed without pulling my hamstring again I could have got into that position.

Agree about Son's goal. Tremendous goal, but as you say, he pretty much ran in a straight line and should've been tackled several times. Not a patch on this 8)

That's very harsh and also not true. Firstly, it is not a straight line. He moves position significantly and does indeed detour around opposition players:

Also, watching the replay it is very clear that more than one Burnley player did their very best to trip up Son, but he was simply too quick for them. And there's not many players in the Premiership that can run anywhere near that fast or for that duration.

I get that you don't like Spurs, but please don't let that cloud your judgement of a truly great goal.

Ehhh, I quite like Spurs!
Well, I did until they appointed Jose but they are the ones who will suffer for that appointment.
There are only two teams in the PL I don't like. As a Liverpool fan, one of them should be pretty bloody obvious, the latter is the original rich man's play thing, who have employed a certain arsehole (discussed above) twice as well as other lovely people like JT, Ashley Cole and Drogba. Ohh and their fans have a bit of a sense of entitlement (granted that isn't unique to them) and a more than slight racist streak. Other than that, I like/don't mind every other club in the PL.

As far as Son's goal goes. It's definitely a good goal, I said that, I just don't think it's quite goal of the season. He runs in a straight line, two Burnley players shadow him and are about to tackle him when he realises he has no pass on and just starts to sprint. He leaves them for dead, then knocks it past Ben Mee (possibly) and then is in on goal. For me a 40 yard screamer in to the top corner A La Coutinho or the goal machine that was Vincent Kompany is a much better goal than just running very fast straight towards the other teams goal while they all faff about and decide to get a yellow for bringing you down. Nothing against Son, or Spuds. I just think his goal was made a lot easier by woeful defending.

Like nearly all of those dribbing the length of the pitch goals (Maradonna '86) with hindsight you can see plenty of opportunities where multiple defenders could have stopped him, even just a Vinnie Jones style rugby tackle, but what makes the goal special is that nobody does, they didn't think he would score and were punished.

I do love the old clips of Georgi Kinkladze dribbling. He scored some great goals, and back when GBH was a legitimate tactic.

Well of course it's fair enough if you genuinely don't think it was a great goal and instead think it merely a good goal. I suspect you will be in a minority in that if so, but there's no crime in that :). And if I was wrong about you not liking Spurs then I apologise. However, I will say that since you usually refer to them by the very unflattering moniker of 'Spuds', you do rather give the impression that you don't much care for them.

I like Spurs and I even like Jose a little bit. I have to say that Son goal isn't even the best goal this season so far for me, it's a great goal for sure. I even think Kane's first goal was better. :?

Ahh no worries on thinking I didn't like Spurs, not a biggie at all. I do call them "Spuds" but more cos I think it's quite funny and it's a good way to wind up a few of the Spurs fans on here. Not meant in an offensive way, more a light hearted tongue in cheek slagging.

All good anyway. Here's hoping they hammer Ze Germans tonight.

If Spurs hammer Buyern tonight I will take my hat of to Jose, they have been the best team so far IMO.

Bayern have been the best team so far?
Bayern got kinda lucky when they beat Spurs 7-2. It was one of those games where everything they hit flew in, or deflected and landed at the feet of another Bayern player for a tap in. No doubts Spurs were **** that night, but you could replay that game three or four times and Bayern would only score 3 or 4.

Only team with 100% record +17 goal difference. (7 more than next best PSG)

Spurs might win tonight as Buyern have already won the group. But for me Lewandowski is the best striker in Europe at the moment and Buyern could go all the way this season.

Agree on Lewandowski (how the **** do you spell that name?). Too soon to say who could win it. The draw for the next round will tell us a bit. The usual suspects are all in with a realistic shout. Real, Barca, Juve, Bayern, City, Pool, maybe even PSG.

On that note. Good to see the CL living up to its reputation for excitement and variety. Four English teams in last 16, four Spanish sides, three Italian, three German and two French (assuming no last minute shocks). Closed shop would be an understatement.

Pools potential oppenents, Real, Atletico, Dortmund, Lyon, and Atalanta. You'd "want" either of the last two, you'd "settle for" Dortmund, and "prefer to avoid" the two Madrid sides.

City can have Real, Atletico, Napoli, Dortmund, Lyon. As it's City we all know they will get Lyon. But like Pool, they will want to avoid Madrid, and would probably settle for Napoli or Dortmund. Lyon should be a gimme.

Spurs can have, PSG, Juve, Barca, RB Leipzig, Valencia. Either of the last two are very beatable. The first three ehhh less so. PSG can be got if you can defend well and play high tempo for 90 mins as they cruise their league every week so struggle to hit 3 or 4th gear for long periods. Juve and Barca are more a case of stopping one man (ok, not "just" one man but each has a main player head and shoulders above anyone else).

Chelsea can have, PSG, Bayern, Juve, Barca, RB Leipzig. There's no way of dressing that up, that's a horrible list of options. RB Leipzig are head and shoulders weaker than the other four. Time to start saying your prayers Chelsea fans.

Don't no I copied and pasted his name from google.

Your right its to early to say and it pains me to say I can't really see anyone beating Liverpool over 2 legs. :?

Liverpool have never lost a two legged European tie while Jurgen has been in charge. But that is like a big unbeaten run, nice while it lasts, but worth **** all really and probably just a statistical anomaly. I wouldn't wanna be Chelsea though, that list of opponents is scary.

Have Utd already won their group? That them seeded for next round? Not that it should really matter, but I doubt they want Inter or Arsenal in the next round. Much better to get some bunch of randoms we have barely heard of.

Man Utd need a draw tonight to win the group, should manage that but who knows with this Utd team. To be honest I don't really care until the quarter finals, if we can't get that far whats the point, it should be a formality. With a CL spot at stake they should really give it a go. If we get to the quarters I may turn the radio off and subscribe to BT Sports again.

What a game that was. That is the kind of game I am pleased to see Jose in charge for. Wolves could have won 5-0, they were by far the better side. But Spurs mostly managed to absorb the pressure and inflict a couple of devastating blows. Arguably an unfair result, but that's how you succeed in football, winning games when the odds are stacked against you.
