PL 2017-2018 Thread

Turned TV off at FT so I havent seen or heard any of the post match stuff. I agree though, he can't complain at all.

Probably time for a new thread but a few interesting bits of news:

1) Zidane resigns from Real - Poch favourite to replace him
2) Silva joins Everton
3) Chelsea cancel their new stadium, no doubt linked to their owner no longer being welcome here
4) Lampard appointed Derby manager, that will go well

Letting Poch go is suicidal... even for a huge cheque. There are too many first team players that are loyal to him, a couple of those are RM suitable (Kane, Eriksen) and will follow him out the door. Let alone a (nother) new stadium to bed into...
Dear God no...

Agreed. Real seriously need to **** off. Having said that, would Poch want to go to RM? He's said many times that he's an Espanyol fan, so would he really want to manage one of their rivals? Time will tell, but I really hope Spurs keep him.

If be more worried if I was a Chelsea fan than a Spurs fan. If Poch does go a lot depends on who comes in, it's a good structure at Spurs.

When Abramovich goes I suspect Chelsea will do a Leeds unless another billionaire comes in

I'm sure the seventeen fans they had before Abramovich will still watch them though and the rest can fill the empty seats at Man citeh...

Espanyol are a Barcelona based side so I suspect their primary dislike is for Barca rather than Madrid, but I don't think anyone outside of Madrid fans, like Real in Spain (and probably outside of Spain too).

Good to see Real NOT get their man, apparently they have accepted Poch is unavailable. As a Liverpool him leaving Spurs would probably have helped boost Pool's chances of making the CL next year again, but I hate how Barca and Real just tap up at will and get away with it every single time. Real are bigger culprits than Barca as well. So Nice to see them getting told to **** off and having to play by the same rules as every else.

Lampard to Derby will obviously be a disaster. Ditto Gerrard to Rangers. Fair play to both for not expecting to walk into a PL managers job, like Giggsy, but I just don't picture either being any good as a manager.

That will end well. Obviously with him lifting the PL title in a few years and not in him being sacked in mid November after winning 20% of his games

Joey Barton! I wouldn't give him a paper round let alone a management job!

I actually think Gerrard and Lampard may become good managers and end up managing Liverpool and Chelsea. I take my hat of to them for giving it a go neither are easy jobs, they don't need the money and could easily spend the next 20 years getting paid to seat around picking holes in other managers decisions. Which they may end up doing anyway.

I think Giggs could do well as well, perhaps the Utd job could be his one day. Alright the 4 games he was in charge of wasn't great, but their was nothing to play for and he was left with the shambles after Moyes. I would have rather seen Giggs get the Swansea job than an established manager from overseas or a Moyes/Pardew type manager.

Imagine if Pep Guardiola had never been given the chance at Barcelona or Zidane at Real Madrid, we need to give young British managers a chance.

Ehhh in four games Giggsy managed to lose to a Gus Poyet Sunderland side. If anything highlights how unsuited you are for football management.....

You can't judge a manager on a four game interim job at the end of a season when Utd had nothing to play for, surely not? Unless your Roman Abramovich or a Liverpool supporter judging a Manchester Utd player manager.

I wish Giggs had been given the job instead of Moyes or Van Gaal. Saying that about Lampard getting the Chelsea job one day is wrong. Gerrard, Terry and Giggs will probably all do that job along with the bloke down the pub as well.

I dunno, to be a manager you need to have that ruthless streak about you. Sorry, to be a GOOD manager you need it. To be a **** manager all you need to be old, English/British and have a load of mates in the media.

None of Giggsy, Gerrard or Lampard look to have that streak about them.
Sometimes you can picture someone as a manager, other times (Joey Barton, John Barnes) you just know it won't work. Those three don't strike me as manager material, none of them seem that bright for a start. I mean that from the tactical point of view. All three where great players but knowing how to play a position on a pitch well is very different from being able to get a team to change tactics mid game.

Don't get me wrong I hope it works out for two of them, Giggsy ****ed his brothers wife for years so I have little time for the wanker, but I just don't see it happening.

I absolutely agree. Being a great footballer or a club legend has exactly zero to do with being a good manager. It's a completely different and new skill set. You need character, charisma and leadership skills to be a manager, something most footballers don't have as made clear by their post match interviews which are often like watching a 5 year old talk as most of these guys have done nothing but play football since the age of 10.

I can't really defend Giggs on the brother situation, although I've never understood the logic in that being worse than cheating on your wife. A real hero of mine as a player but as a person I obviously have no respect for him what so ever. The deceitfull streak in anyone that can do that is unforgivable to most, but who I am I to judge? Shows he's pretty ruthless as well. I'm not saying top players automatically become good managers that's clearly not the case, but well done for trying, their multi million air's, you must have something if you won't to carry on to management after the game has taken your entire adult life until retirement.

I would say Lampard, Giggs and Gerrard are all in a more difficult positions in their jobs from day one than the average manager because club owners and fans expect great things from day one. That said they have connections in the game that the average name doesn't. They are all well respected as players throughout world football. If your a championship or Scottish Premiership player your going to want to play for Gerrard or Lampard over Neil Warnock.

The analogy I use is, "if you or an immediate family member was going for a brain operation would you want the best most qualified surgeon available (ie a good manager) or Dave who has had loads of lobotomies and knows all about them (ie a good player)?" Needless to say it's the first one every time.
